- Mari is a Flutter pony. This is a subspecies of Changeling that has the attributes of butterflies or moths, with wings being the biggest giveaway. Flutter Ponies are often seen as being rather fragile compared to other Changeling species, but they are very good at using wind magic. When working together, Flutter Ponies can generate hurricane-force winds that can blow clouds or enemies away. They are generally a peaceful lot and while they are fairly rare in Equestria, can be seen as symbols for the arrival of spring.
Mari is a Type 1 Changeling (basically was fertilized as an egg and can reproduce on her own as opposed to Type 2 Changelings who are both sexless and sterile) and was the Crown Princess of her hive. In order to become queen, she would have to get married but her chosen fiance proved to be unfaithful. Mari vowed to never fall in love again until she met Bog and they were found to have similar interests. After defeating the army led by Mari's ex. fiance, Mari, and Bog confessed their love to each other and were officially married.
The result of their union was several eggs, one of which would hatch into Chrysalis. Chrysalis' upbringing was rather normal, with the grub being loved and doted on by both parents. She was given the food that she needed in order to survive and grow and gave back the drops of liquid that would help her parents and hive mates thrive. Chrysalis went through all the molts that a young Changeling goes through and was now a lovely adult. Chrysalis had grown up seeing the love that her parents had for each other and came to desire that same kind of magic in her own life. Chrysalis chose to leave home one day and came upon a small town of ponies. She was quite young and naive as she trotted into town, but quickly was met by shouts and the sight of ponies running away in fear. They called her ugly, scary, a monster. Chrysalis runs away in tears and returns home to her parents. Mari and Bog tell her that she is beautiful and that she will find somebody who will accept her for who she is one day.
Chrysalis isn't convinced, even more so when she learns that ponies have been the enemies of Changelings for many years. She does not want to wait for somebody to love her one day, she wants their love now! Chrysalis looks at her family and sees how there is a kind of love going on here. The grubs rely on the adults for food, affection, and care. In return, they provide the nutrients that keep the adults running when they are unable to find liquids from the field. Chrysalis bids her time and then challenges her parents for control of the hive. She defeats her mother and drains her of her love, so much so that Mari ends up dying. The same happens to Bog.
With her parents dead, Chrysalis becomes the new Queen of the Changelings and gets to work. Her siblings and other relatives are either drained (and killed) or driven off into exile. Chrysalis begins laying eggs which hatch into grubs who then molt and begin doing all the other duties. They are a new kind of Changeling, one who drains love from victims (often to the point of death). These Changelings are able to change their forms in order to blend in and terrorize the land of Chrysalis' birth for many years before a sudden temperature change has them relocated to an area in Equestria.
An attack by a dragon leads to the Changelings being imprisoned in a Volcano for many more years. Eventually, they are able to escape and begin to terrorize Equestria (only to be defeated by Twilight Sparkle and the rest of the Mane Six). The last battle is in the Crystal Empire and Chrysalis finds herself defeated by Starlight Glimmer and her own son, Thorax. Thorax has learned how to embrace love and is reformed. The rest of the hive begins to follow his example and are metamorphosed one by one. When Chrysalis recovers from the blow that had knocked her unconscious, she is confronted by a colorful lot. Starlight Glimmer attempts to offer the Queen a chance to be reformed, but Chrysalis spurns her attempts at friendship and flees. But she is now alone. Her children have abandoned her and her harem is all dead. Chrysalis finds companionship in two unlikely sources. Lord Tirek and Cozy Glow. Their attempts to defeat Twilight Sparkle and take over the world (because why just stop at Equestria) fail and the trio are enclosed in stone...until a pair that consists of a unicorn and a pegasus speaks up for them all.
Now free from stone, Tirek, Cozy Glow, and Chrysalis are exiled and after Chrysalis gets her carapace handed to her by Thorax's new mate, they travel to the "Distant Land". While Tirek becomes the King of his people, and Cozy Glow finds a place that gives her power and the ability to use all her skills, Chrysalis attracts the attention of a male Changeling named Arhgg. She gives birth to a child named Colossal and is happy.
Unknown to Chrysalis, one of her sisters (who is also a Flutter Pony) was able to escape and set up a colony in Flutter Valley. Her descendants live there to this day and one of them (named Love Bee) will later meet and marry her [Chrysalis'] son Pharynx.
