MYSTERIOUS • PASSIONATE • ALTRUISTIC

Riposa is a quiet and secretive individual and often feels the need to withdraw. Even though they're an individual of few words, they enjoy like-company and have a generally calm demeanor most of the time, even when under great pressure. Undernieth that calm is an extremely passionate person — they have trouble ignoring their gut feelings, even when operating in a group. They believe their wrath is right and just, and while they deeply understand that infighting is detrimental to a group, there are some things they refuse to let slide.

They're the kind of person who appreciates just sitting in the same room with people they enjoy, doing their own thing or observing the goings-on. They have an uncanny ability to read people but keep their own personal feelings to themselves, very rarely, if ever, sharing personal information to anyone. Their incredibly distrusting nature doesn't make for easy friendships, but Riposa is as loyal an ally as one can get once you win them over.

BACKSTORY

Riposa grew up in the hands of the Shift, a secret organization that helped peope displaced by war, headhunters, or conflict. After being picked up off the streets by a man named Yousen, Riposa, then going by their infernal birth name Ren'nye, was finally able to feel useful in the fight against corruption, injustice, and the conflicts that had tore their life apart.

Ren'nye was bitter in their youth. Growing up a beggar thief orphaned from war and a tiefling to boot, they always felt people's eyes were cutting right through them. They felt slighted by the universe, not knowing why others seemed to be completely uncaring towards their and may others' plights in the wake of tragedy.

With the Shift, though, they eventually found happiness and purpose. As they grew they met like-minded people that they were able to bond with. They even found love for a time, but the rage for the curelty brought upon them never truly died down. They always wanted to be on the front lines of their missions for the Shift, under Yousen's team where members were known as Harkeners.

Ultimately it was not meant to last. Factionalism within the Shift had come to a head and resulted in many members turning against one another. Enemies from within the Shift destroyed the Harkeners and their base in a brutal raid. Riposa was mortally wounded but managed to complete one final act before their death. In a desperate attempt to save their own life they imbibed the Hunter's Bane, pleading for its magic to save their life before ultimately dying from the experience. With this ritual they made a pact with a long-dead Shift member – one who was rumored to roam the world as a warrior of undeath with an army of undead ex-members in tow, hungering and lusting for vengeance.

Riposa, now alive once more thanks to their patron, now has to live with this decision for the rest of their life, often reasoning that "it takes a monster to kill a monster". In their new life they took the name Riposa, meaning "rest", in hopes that one day they will be able to avenge their fallen faction and live in peace.

FAMILY

Zarus "Wit" Velvenne — Father, tiefling Riposa remembers their father the most, but even that is only snippets. They recall his red-and-white complexion and long black hair, and his curving horns. Their most vivid memory of their father is of his ingenuity, and how he always tried to make the best of their miserable situation.

Belladiza Velvenne— Mother, drow. Riposa spent a lot of time with their mother but it was cut very short. They mostly remember how much they looked alike — or, at least, before they died. Their fondest memory was their mother taking them to scenic places that remained somewhat-intact amidst the conflict.

LINK

Riposa is on the shorter side, and underneath their many layers of loose clothing is a lithe but toned body. Their dark, grey-blue skin is heavily scarred, and their horns and tail are lined with small spikes, with a corner of their tail spade cut off from a previous injury. Their eyes glow a sickly yellow underneath their mask. They never seem to take their mask completely off, if they can help it.

  • Their blood is darker red than it should be, bordering on black, and is more viscus than normal.

  • Breathing and heart rate is always slow, even when trying to catch breath or after strenuous activity.

YOUSEN

Mentor; surrogate parent

Riposa lost their parents much too young, so when Yousen came into their life they were given a second chance at a guiding figure. They greatly admired him for his resillience, tenacity, and altruistic nature. He taught Riposa how to sneak, defend themselves properly, and survival techniques. What he didn't intend to teach them, however, was alchemy, though after Riposa's unrelenting curiosity he gave in.

Azarin

Girlfriend; the lovers lost

If ever there were anyone Riposa saw as the most innocent soul, it was Azarin. She was brought into the Harkeners before Riposa and was just a few years older, but wanted to be a battlefield medic. She often fretted about the much more daring Riposa as they grew up together, but grew up into a strong, compassionate woman that Riposa loved unconditionally. They were inseperable and often led missions together before the fall of the Harkeners.

The Fervorreaper

Patron; vengeance undying

Riposa holds immense distrust of their patron. Their soul has been bound to the Fervorreaper with the imbibing of the Hunter's Bane in exchange for being brought back to life. Should it be eliminated, there is a chance Riposa could die, which leaves them heasitant to do so even now. Their patron mostly communicates with them in dreams, where Riposa enters a deathlike, unwakable sleep.

  • THE SHIFT / HARKENERS
  • In the midst of corruption, tragedy, and injustice running rife in their homelands, the Shift worked as a sword in the dark to seek retribution for innocents wronged by the wars and prejudices of kings and rulers. In their heyday they had sects all over the realm — hideouts for political prisoners, harboring runaways and fugitives, and working to free prisoners of war.

In its prime, the Shift mainly operated in the form of safe havens and spy networks. If a spy caught wind that the enemy was marching towards a town or city, special agents called Harkeners would secretly evacuate vulnerable populations so they would not be targeted in the conflict. The Shift welcomed any demonized, ostracized, exiled, or displaced individuals should they respond to the warning. They usually employed rogues, rangers, clerics, and monks, but some of the best known (for good or for ill) faction members were paladins and fighters.

Naturally, when running an underground network of renegades, members have different opinions on how much influence they should exert over the world. Constant attacks from outside and factionalism from within has left the Shift reduced to almost nothing; a mere shadow of their former influence made up of splinter groups, many of which have since lost sight of the original purpose of the faction and turned into assassins for hire, thieves guilds, private armies, and other dubious organizations.
