Dr. Mikhail Balakin stands at the head of the biomedical research division in the Zygan Corporation. Known to be eccentric, many people give the doctor a wide berth-- few people want to get involved with a "mad scientist" who experiments on himself and keeps a feral chupacabra in his lab. Despite the wary looks, Mikhail's heart is in the right place. He's obviously passionate about his field of research and seeks to use magic and science to better the lives of both humans and creatures alike.

DESIGN NOTES
- Mikhail was born a human but has been mutated from stem cell research and augmentation.
- Vodyanoy Features: His right pupil (viewer's left) is shaped like a frog's, he features occasional scales across his skin.
- Harpy Features: He has two underdeveloped wing nubs on his back--they're mostly bald with patchy feathers, he has a ruff of feathers around his neck.
- Leshy Features: The wooden leg he has is digitigrade-- he walks with an odd gait. Twigs and branches grow from his hair. His horn is wooden.
- Werewolf Features: Arm attached at the elbow. Perpetually furry.
- Man-made Features: Often wears an Oxygen mask. The cyberpunk future city is heavy with air pollution and due to his heart condition he needs clean air to breathe. He doesn't have to wear it all the time but often does.

BACKSTORY
[ Youth ]
Mikhail was born in the wake of a nuclear disaster in Russia. The accidental devastation caused by the eco-terrorist group Mokosh resulted in high mortality rate of newborn children, and those who survived were often deformed. Mikhail was one of these babies-- born with severe athsma due to small lungs and underdeveloped limbs, he had a rough start to his life.
Doctors in Russia spearheaded the movement of cryptid-related biological research when Mikhail was a young teenager. He volunteered to be a test subject for an experimental medicine-- he would be injected with the stem cells of the vodyanoy, an amphibious creature with a large lung capacity. The goal of the test was to see if his ability to breathe would be impacted by the stem cells. Much to the delight of the doctors, Mikhail and his family, the test worked. His lungs expanded and he was finally able to breathe normally. However, the stem cells did have a side-effect-- his skin turned green, his ears became fin-like, and he developed other amphibious features.
Despite his drastic change in appearance, Mikhail was inspired. He decided to study medicine and cryptobiology so he could further the research that changed his life.
"...Was then I decided to study medicine so I could change people's lives the way mine was. As I studied, I experiment on myself. Hard to find people willing to be test subject, so I test on myself to not put people at risk. Cryptozoological components are unpredictable and hard to determine how they will affect human body. This field of study is still relatively recent, yes? So next I decide my voice will be next subject. I came to conclusion harpy stem cell will stimulate vocal chords, so I used them. I can now speak, but as you can tell is not very conventional."
[ Adulthood ]
His vocal cords were atrophied due to lack of use. Because of his lung condition, Mikhail was basically mute. As a young man in medical training, he chose to inject himself with harpy stem cells to stimulate his vocal cords. He can now speak, though he doesn't have to move his mouth to do so. A side effect caused feathers to grow around the injection site and he formed small, bald and useless wing appendages. The appendages formed very slowly.
He still had a gimp leg and decided to try grafting parts from donated bodies to himself using magic. By this point he was an established doctor. He chose the leshen for its life-oriented magic. He grafted the leg to his stump to see if, with some magitech stimulation, it would act lifelike. This took trial and error but he got it eventually.
His next project was restoring dead tissue to life with magitech. Conveniently he lost his arm in a lab accident (likely tested something on himself that resulted in its loss) so he once again tested his own ideas on himself. With trial and error, he grafted the werewolf arm to himself and it eventually worked.
