The five kids Shayun raised with his late partner, Denningil, a Roegadyn conjurer who settled in the Coerthas Highlands before they froze over.
Each kid has a tab of their own with specifics, but they were all orphans Ingil took in--Shayun doesn't consider himself a parent figure to any of the five, though all of them (especially the youngest, Yuris) disagreed. (He insisted on being their Uncle if they called him by any kind of filial title at all, which they do.) They lived together raising a karakul flock in a remote village, with Ingil as the sole emergency medical guy for malms around, for over a decade--being one of a VERY small number of Roegadyn in the area, Ingil was well-known, and Shayun (as the only Viera in all of Coerthas at all) was also a local fixture despite his discomfort with being immediately recognizable as "that really skilled hunter and leathermaker from [placename]". (Despite the reputation, Shayun was more of a househusband--his labor kept the family clothed, and the nature of that labor usually kept him around when Ingil had to travel.)
This idyll came shattering down around their heads when the Calamity happened. The village escaped being the first hit by the sudden aetheric shifts only by a thread, and while all the village was successfully evacuated Ingil took a serious chest injury while getting everyone away. It would have been survivable... but he ignored it in favor of helping others, and by the time Shayun had enough downtime to notice and force him to take the time off to care for it, the injury had become septic. Ingil died after a long, horrible struggle, and Shayun stopped eating without being forced out of grief. The older of the five kids (most of whom were adults by this point) recognized that things were going to go very bad for the family soon, and began to make preparations for that. While things didn't collapse in the way they expected, Shayun left when Yuris turned 16, after having spent basically all of his time ensuring the kids would be fine without him. Responses to this varied but were generally very negative, and the relationships they had had with him were all soured by that choice.
As of HW, all of the kids are aware of the stories of a Viera Warrior of Light, but they generally assume it couldn't be Shayun. Post-HW, they all know he's a Warrior of Light and are back in contact with him, but have extremely conflicted feelings about his half-decade absence from their lives to varying degrees. Baatu and Yuris are the most forgiving, while Janchette demanded time to cool down before seeing him face-to-face, which took until ShB patch time (when she decided he should see how much of her life he'd missed out on being part of in the form of meeting her infant daughter).
