Hazel Meyers has spent most of her life dabbling in the arts of paganism and witchcraft. She doesn't use actual magic, but she does know how to make a variety of useful potions. Her home is located in the depths of a huge forest so that no one can come find her. Even if you manage to stumble across her, it's not likely that she'll want to talk.

Trivia

  • Hazel is a bit of a hoarder. She tends to stock up a lot of things like bird feathers, scrap junk, and plant parts in the depths of her labs. She claims that maybe she'll use it one day, but for now it's just something pretty to look at.
  • When she's in a bad mood, she'll fidget with her bangs. It's also her tall that she's lying about something.
  • She'll never admit it, but she loves to sing and hum. The only reason why she's shy is because she's kind of embarrassed and thinks her voice sounds squeaky. It really doesn't.
  • One of her proudest things she's worked on is collecting stones. In a box near her dresser, she has a full on set of all sorts of gems. Rare, shiny, dull, above or below ground - you name it, it's most likely there.
  • Her favorite drink is tea. In fact, a whole chunk of her garden is dedicated to growing tea leaves.
  • On the side, Hazel sews a little and is able to patch up some of her clothes and make new ones. When she gets married, she wants to make her own tux as well as her girlfriend's outfit.

Design Notes

  • Below her bangs is a regular glass eye.
  • The flowers in her hair are actually based off real ones: red fuschias, blue daisies + blue flax, and a tuscan gold.
  • Sometimes she wears old-fashioned goggles when she's in her workshop.
Summary

Hazel got into witchcraft and being gay(tm) even though she had religious parents, which severed their ties. In the middle of her studies on witchcraft, she lost one of her eyes and ended up moving from England to the United States to get away from her mom and dad.

Backstory

Hazel was born in mid 1970's England to Christian and conservative parents. They were profoundly against sinning and anything that had to do with the LGBTQ+ community. By the time Hazel could walk, she was being raised a good little Sunday school girl. At every opportunity, her parents taught her Bible verses and encouraged her to go to church and find friends in small groups.

She did find herself in a group of girls at church when she was around seven. However, to her parents' dismay, this backfired. Hazel told them she liked one of the girls in her group and wondered what that meant. Their response? Tell her that homosexuality is a sin and that she would be better off with a boy.

That didn't work, either. She ended up not being able to brush away her little lesbian feelings. And it made her think: "if Mom and Dad are wrong about me liking girls, are they also wrong about other things?" Which led her to sneakily get involved in witchcraft. She would ask her mother to take her to the book store and sneak off into the corner, huddled up with a horror story. Other times, she would convince her mom to get her dad to buy her witchy clothes for school parties.

But her new found interests couldn't last long. In the mid 1980's, the Satanic Panic had spread to England. Her parents practically interrogated her and managed to find about her interest in paganism. They stripped her whole life away gave her sermons, books, lengthy lectures...anything to get her away from such sinful acts.

Did she care? Nope. At this point, she was tired of all the propaganda getting shoved down her throat. After turning thirteen, she no longer identified as a Christian. She started to come out to some of the queer kids at her school, who accepted her more than her parents ever could.

Hazel eventually found a girlfriend who she kept secret from her parents. She also found an interest in botany and chemistry after taking a semester of classes, which she combined with her knowledge of pagan potions and spells. Her partner was very supportive and expressed that she also wanted to become a chemist, further fueling their relationship with each other.

On a fateful Halloween night, this would change for the worse. Hazel's parents usually allowed her to go trick-or-treating as long as she didn't dress up in anything scary, didn't hang out wtih anyone scary, and only went to houses with people her parents trusted. She loved the holiday for what it was, and still did as a fifteen year old. The only difference was that now, she had a different motive than collect candy. All she wanted was a quiet date night with her significant other.

She managed to sneak off, but not until one of her nosy Christian neighbors found out and outed her. And this is where it gets really bad.

It turned out that her 'girlfriend' was just acting as a decoy hired by her parents to test if still identified as a lesbian. Beyond furious that she fell for it, her parents took away everything she ever had and made her hate herself by doing something terrible: they sent her straight to conversion therapy.

It was obvious she hated it there, even getting physically harmed just for being herself. She tried and coped by tinkering with potion ingredients, but one of the clergies found out and had a fight with her. This led to some of the potion getting in her eye and burning it.

There was no going back at this point. Hazel managed to escape and, because she was an adult and independent of her paernts, flew to California. Her parents tried to reconcile, but they couldn't find her. How come? She wasn't living in your average house. She had made a home for herself deep in the Redwood forests in one of the trees, where she practiced her witchcraft and love for paganism without any guilt.
