History

• Born in 1998 to Meiling "Mabel" Zhao and Weiguo "Henry" Wang, two Chinese immigrants who'd moved to Blackfish a year prior
• Meiling worked several odd jobs around town (eventually founding the Jade Palace restaurant in town), while Weiguo was a coal miner
• Was often picked on in grade school as one of the only Chinese kids living in town
• Befriended Carolyn Hudson, the daughter one of the most influential families in Blackfish
• The two were close until Cara was sent away to a prestigious boarding school at age 11
• Although they attempted to stay in touch, they eventually lost contact with one another, and it would be years until Lia would hear from her again
• Lia began to focus all of her time and energy on her studies, determined to escape Blackfish and make a life for herself
• She graduated high school with stellar grades, earning a full-ride scholarship to Rice University in Houston, Texas as a neuroscience major
• She flourished in college and was finally able to meet other like-minded people for the first time, becoming close friends with her roommate Ivy
• Although Lia had known that she was a lesbian since she was in middle school, she began to experiment with her gender identity and expression for the first time
• She also had several short-lived romantic relationships while at college, but her studies always took priority for her
• However, all seemed well, and she had a bright future ahead of her—she hoped to eventually pursue a career in medicine
• All of this came crashing down during her junior year, when Meiling called her to tell her that her father had been diagnosed with late-stage lung cancer
• The medical costs necessary for her father's treatment had left their financial situation rather bleak, and they needed her help
• Lia left school and rushed back to Blackfish, where she learned that Weiguo would likely have only a year left to live
• She masked her grief and frustration by throwing herself into her work, assisting her mother at the restaurant whenever she could
• One day, Cara Hudson unexpectedly returns to Blackfish, and the two begin to reconnect
