Kotakane Iroha

“The jubokko (”tree child”) is a tree that absorbed large amounts of human blood and turned into a youkai. At a glance almost indistinguishable from a regular tree, it will reach down and grab any living creature that gets too close with its branches, draining their blood through them.”

Jokes aside, this particular jubokko gained a human form and uprooted herself because she got tired of humans trying to burn her or cut her down. Nowadays she mostly subsists on the contents of transfusion blood packets.
Though she enjoys relaxing in her dedicated plant pot, thanks to her blood diet she’s not bound to the soil for survival like regular trees, following a similar principle to carnivorous plants.

(To wit, said plants grow on waterlogged but infertile soil, like peat bogs and swamps, and evolved to eat insects in order to get their nutrients through an alternate source.)

The world changed a lot through the years. Thanks to current technology, we can draw blood with no harm and store it in refrigerators for long periods. It’s nice to think that bloodsucking creatures that would’ve been considered dangerous and hunted down centuries ago can now survive without hurting anyone and live in peace.
