As a child Venora Blight would bring home all sorts of what her parents would call "creepy crawlies," and beg them to let her keep them. They turned down several tarantulas, jumping spiders, a giant centipede and a forest scorpion before she found a toad. It still wasn't the dog or cat they wished she'd settle for, but it was a doable compromise. They still didn't want to touch a slimy toad though, and assured her she'd be wholly responsible for its care, to which she agreed. The frog patiently and happily remained perched on her hoof while she put together a small enclosure. And for a few days, all seemed well- better than, in fact! Blight's desire for an animal companion had been sated, and her parents were just thankful there were no more spiders in their home.

Unfortunately, disaster struck as Blight and her new pet bonded. It warmed up to her, feeling comfortable enough to migrate from her hoof to her saddlebags, and then to her back. After one of their adventures traveling as foal and frog, Blight returned with a horrid rash where her toad had ridden her. A trip to the doctor revealed the breed of toad Blight had brought home was poisonous! Only mildly so, though, nothing more than mild skin irritaion. Sure enough, Blight's rash cleared up quickly. But there was no way her parents were going to allow her to keep a poisonous pet! She was forced to part with her companion who, by this time, she had grown incredibly attached to. Blight became determined to prove to her parents that she could safely handle her frog. Defiance became genuine interest, and that interest turned into a cutie mark, and as an adult, a very involved hobby keeping toxic and dangerous plants and animals. (And though in secret, she did reunite with her toad.)

It started as a hobby, but Blight soon found there was coin to be had in selling poisons for antivenom production. Dealing with toxins for so long isn't without risk, but she's built up quite a resistance to most of the substances she handles on the regular.
