As the son of a head chief, Blake is often faced with high expectations: from his father, who is in search of a rightful heir; his mother, who thinks he lacks maturity compared to his brothers; and his friends, who see him as a popularity tool. In a world where strength and wits define everything, Blake feels chained in a life with no purpose. Going out on an expedition is like a job for kings, for they are a spectral town: a hidden intelligence agency no one ever heard of.
What drives Blake through arduous training is his childhood friend, Cera. Known under the pseudonym Ceramide, she was the child of a messenger, one who gives them confidential information. Her last message was, “I will protect what I must protect,” along with a small carving of a sword. Anyone in his town would know better than to get themselves involved, as such carvings meant a bloodthirsty hunt. But to Blake, it meant something else; he picked up the sword as his weapon of choice and revealed his ultimate mission to his tribe–something no one believed he could accomplish: find and save Cera. He carved the exact symbol on the back of his sword, showing how madly determined he is to bring her back. But there are two flaws in his plan: One, finding someone who has been missing for seven years with no dust of clue is near impossible, and Two, no one has ever survived for more than two months after they received the carving.
In such an unsupportive situation, Blake chose to leave his town right after he graduated and earned his official expedition badge. As his father wanted to send him to the other side of the world from where Cera was last seen, Blake left his town on the night of the ceremony. With the help of his brother Blyke, Blake begins a journey that proves the expectations wrong: he disqualifies himself as a rightful heir, he is mature enough to be on his own, and his popularity goes to a downside that no one dares to speak his name. What everyone knows about Blake is that unpredictable is the only word close enough to describe him.
