About
A mysterious figure who appeared on The Mercenary after their acquisition of what was thought to be a long-forgotten safe. Nobody knows what lies within—though a rumor has started among the crewmembers that Georgie will be laid to rest once the contents are discovered. Georgie changes the subject whenever this rumor is brought up.
Story
Ever since appearing on The Mercenary, Georgie’s true intentions have been hard to make out. The rest of the crew have tried a myriad of methods to lay him to rest, all of which to no avail. It doesn’t help that some of the crew has grown attached to him. A lackadaisical boy with a tendency to lash out, Georgie is all but an official member of The Mercenary’s crew..
The Past
Being a ghost, Georgie does not remember most details of his life before his unfortunate passing. However, that doesn’t mean he had no life. The Carters, a family who grew to success due to their delicious coffee, adopted Georgie at a very young age. As one would expect from the Carters’ wealth, Georgie lived a safe, fashionable, and frankly sheltered life. This didn’t stop him from causing trouble, however his family was very relaxed when it came to disciplining him. So long as he didn’t tamper with anything related to the coffee, he was pretty much off the hook.
Georgie’s parents never opted to tell him of his adoption, as they feared what would happen if he knew before he was mature enough to understand. They made sure to keep his adoption papers hidden, and brush off his curiosity with “You’ll understand when you’re older.”
Every year, the Carters spend a holiday in a different place, and that year they decided upon [country name]. So, using the family boat, and storing all of their important documents in a safe, they embarked on what they had hoped would be an exciting trip. Though it was exciting, it wasn’t the exact excitement they wanted.
An unexpected storm struck the ship, the raging waves throwing it to, fro, and eventually under. Georgie sank down, down, the depths paralyzing him until the tightness in his chest became unbearable. He didn’t know the word for it, but he understood what was happening.
He saw his parents slip those papers he wasn’t allowed to see into the safe. When they caught him peeking, they said the same thing they always say: “You’ll understand when you’re older.”
Would he ever be older?
Georgie blinked, and when he opened his eyes he was in quite the strange, yet beautiful, place. Creatures he had never seen before flew over and danced around him. Some traveled in groups, others alone. Some scuttled under his feet, which were dangling. It was then he realized he was sitting, and stood to follow the waltz of these dreams. By nature, he looked at where he sat, and it was as if his world was confined to a spotlight: the safe. This was what held the one thing he was barred from knowing, and it followed him to this world?
He took it upon himself to force this safe open, a sort of punishment for disturbing his wonder. However, as he wrapped his hand around the safe’s dial, it wouldn’t turn no matter how hard his grip was. He tried pushing against the door, but it felt… odd. It didn’t feel like how a safe should feel. It was more like he was pressing against a mirror, where his reflection pushed back no matter how much force was in his arms. This didn’t feel right, he thought. None of this did.
He was looking down as he strained to do anything to the safe, he noticed something moving. It was making its way through his chest, though he didn’t feel a thing. He tried to grab it, but his hand went through. Something tightened in him. It was a fish, he realized, swimming through his chest. It was all fish. Fish live in the water, so…
…Where was Georgie? Every time he tried to remember, he couldn’t. All he knew was his name and that safe. He grew more distressed every time he came to that conclusion. Surely there was something in his life, right? Anything? Though he couldn’t feel them, tears were running down his cheeks. He started sobbing.
He cried and cried until a dancing school caught his eye. He watched each fish twirl around each other, a mesmerizing symphony that, albeit briefly, distracted him from his worries. Maybe now he can watch the fish, then worry about himself later. So he sat back on the safe, the only other thing he knew, and he watched and waited.
It would be a long, long, very long time before anything around Georgie changed. He hadn’t noticed the strangers surrounding his safe until they hoisted it from the ground. Everything grew lighter as Georgie ascended, so much so that he had to shield his eyes once they surfaced. Once his eyes adjusted, he spotted a boat unlike anything he had seen before!
Before he could ask about it, he was heaved onto the ship and carried below deck shortly after. At least he wasn’t blinded, but there was still something odd about his current surroundings. Though he was sure he wasn’t in the water anymore, he felt like he… was? There was still that sort of floaty pressure on him… before he could reason himself out of it, he was swimming through the air. It felt like a dream, all of this, but the thought of it didn’t sit right within him.
Surely he would wake up sometime, right?
The Future
After Georgie becomes acclimated to The Mercenary, he quickly grows attached to its crew, all for varying reasons. He seems especially fond of the captain and [name]; they react the most positively to Georgie’s antics, even if the latter is terrified of him. That isn’t to say he doesn’t like those who react negatively to his actions, but… the feelings aren’t reciprocated.
The safe that holds Georgie to this plane will be opened, but he won’t exactly be put to rest. This is how he learns that he was adopted, and he seems more confused than at peace. Why would his parents keep that information from him, he thought. Though odds are slim he’ll find the answer to that question, it’s just enough to keep him with his new family, for now.
