Max comes from an upper class family of doctors from Houston. She has two older siblings which makes her the youngest. Their parents were strict for their whole childhood, but they also were absent for most of the time due to the nature of their work; all of them stayed with nannies, or later on, completely alone, taking care of each other. Her mother is a neurosurgeon, father works as a cardiologist, and her brothers decided to study stomatology and pathology.

Being very quiet and withdrawn kid, she never had many friends. She usually played and did things on her own, and that stayed up until she reached adulthood. People treated her like a low-maintenance or replaceable friend, they liked her and enjoyed her company, but she never managed to keep friendships for long. Loneliness still weighs on her, but she has less time to care about it. She suffered from depression for a long time, but couldn't really pinpoint what was wrong as her parents never cared enough for her to see the specialist.

She decided to follow medical school for the sole reason of saving lives; although there was pressure to continue the family's tradition, she didn't felt pressured at all. She had good grades and managed to earn some scholarships because of that, which eased her student debts a little. Although her parents helped her out with the debt, she had to pay half of it on her own. She appreciated the help, though, not having to lose so much money monthly for education. She finished school with honors as a paramedic, with an immediate invite from Trauma Team. As soon as she finished university, she moved out to Night City to pursue her carreer.

Life in Night City was not the brightest, too; she had to move in to an accomodation with two flatmates that never treated her nicely. She was abused by them, but she had no other choice but to stay there and hope they will actually give up on bullying her. They never did, and she stayed there due to no better options. She started therapy, seeing one of her university friends after working hours, as it was strictly forbidden for medics to have any record of mental issues. All her therapy visits and meds she takes are completely off the charts, not to lose her job.

Besides therapy and meds, she does everything she can to maintain being high-functioning; she practices self-care, found herself things to do outside her job that make her happy, found a little group of friends that care about her even with her specific nature. She still spends most of her time alone, but there are options she can choose from, and that makes life a little bit easier. She believes she is a lost cause mental-wise, but does not give up working on herself.
