Exile's housefolk paid a lot of money to bring him into their home. At some point Exile found out about this, and proceeded to make it his whole personality. He's snarky, only socializes with those he considers on his level, and independent to a fault. Unfortunately he's not really that impressive, and once you're able to see past his ego you'll notice that he's desperately trying to fake it until he makes it. Most of the other pets in his neighborhood look at him with pity.
