This ocean creature is extremely rare, and numbers are thinning fast from over hunting. Their scales shine with most excellency, and are the perfect gifts from husbands to their wives.
However, over time of being in such scarce numbers, this species have adapted in a remarkable way- each member has both male and female sex organs. They reproduce in a similar way to fish, but require no second partner to do so; being able to both lay and fertilize eggs.
This doesn't mean they do not need companionship, it is very common for these creatures to seek out a mate, seemingly they do this to seek the company, rather than for reproductive purposes. They will stay with this companion their whole life. If the companion dies, they will return to producing offspring on their own, preferring not to seek out another mate. It has been noticed that they enter a very human-like depressed state if this happens to them.
