Silas helped Ariza become more accustomed to American life when she had freshly arrived, and the two have been friends ever since. He's a timid person usually, but is fully supportive of his best friend. They also bonded over their similar past experiences- while they don't fully know eachothers' traumas, they have similar emotions and provide each other with a shoulder to lean on where they would otherwise have nobody. 

Silas is a FTM trans man, and his relationship with his gender identity is deeply intertwined with his traumas. He often felt a need to exaggerate his femininity in order to gain others' approval, and as such did not realize this was not his true self until later in life. He still has complicated feelings about his people-pleasing behaviour and how he still prefers some feminine gender expression (his long hair and jewelry, for instance), but is largely more comfortable now that he can express himself as male.
