Overview

Awang is the main protagonist and central character of YOHA 余波. Skilled and bold in battle, he is the leader of the Committee of Public Safety’s Tokyo Elite Division. Formerly loyal to the now-deceased Kyoshi, Awang is one of the few remaining members keeping the Committee afloat as a power vacuum threatens to ravage them from the inside out.

Personality

Awang is tremendously dedicated to Kyoshi‘s rule over the Committee of Public Safety and executes his every will. Many of his colleagues and subordinates note his efficient and ruthless attitude, fitting for someone of Awang’s position. Subsequently, he has little qualms about killing and often makes the difficult decisions that his co-worker’s cannot. Despite this, Awang is keenly aware of the ambiguity of his morals and only demonstrates violence when necessary or ordered by his superior. He absolutely despises dishonourable conduct and those who betray the Committee’s will.

In spite of his occupation and general attitude, Awang is described as humorous and compassionate by his close circle of friends. He seems to enjoy traditionally “feminine” hobbies such as cooking and playing piano.

His devotion to Kyoshi stems from the fact that he took the former under his wing after their initial encounter in the Underground. From there, Kyoshi taught Awang to write, read, fight, and control his supernatural abilities. This resulted in him developing an unbreakable devotion to Kyoshi and the Committee of Public Safety. Awang adopted many of Kyoshi’s principles and personality traits, causing others to note their stark similarities.

Although Awang was unquestionably dedicated to Kyoshi, his faith began to waver when the latter seemingly replaced him with Isamu Kitsuke. This was amplified further after Kyoshi abandoned the very principles he taught Awang and committed unforgivable crimes against the public population. Following his death, Awang finds himself lost and directionless, yet continues to serve and protect the ordinary mortals as he always did.

abilities

Arguably one of the most capable and versatile Committee members, Awang has many abilities at his disposal.

  • CONTRACT(S):
    • Awang currently has contracts with the Primordial of Shadows and the Primordial of Justice, which grant him a large arsenal of powers at an unknown cost.
  • POWERS:
    • Teleportation: Awang can travel long or short distances through a shadow portal. In addition to teleporting himself, he can also take items or other people with him. This teleportation allows him to evade and dodge effortlessly in battle. However, Awang has limitations — and constant use of this ability will tire him out quickly.
    • Semi-invisibility: When shadows are near his proximity, Awang can blend into them and become imperceptible to the naked eye. Albeit, his invisibility only extends until he  is exposed to light.
    • Shoot: Similar to Kyoshi’s fatal attacks, if Awang points at his opponent and says ”fire”, a tremendous force will collapse a hole in the area Awang pointed at. In contrast to Kyoshi, this comes at a cost of his life being shortened every time it is used.
    • “Equality”: If an opponent successfully lands at least three blows on Awang, the Primordial of Justice will reciprocate by inflicting the same amount of attacks with greater damage. A successful landing is not guaranteed.
    • Regeneration: By consuming entrails and/or blood, Awang can restore his health.
  • SKILLS:
    • Swordsmanship: Awang is shown to be incredibly adept in wielding a keris — his primary weapon.
Trivia

  • NOMENCLATURE
    • Awang — “eldest son” for being Kyoshi’s first official protege.
  • Traditionally, most Malays do not have last names. Instead they take the personal name of their father. Awang’s birth father is unknown, thus he does not have a patronymic surname.
  • Awang’s blade is known as a keris; a weapon derived from Southeast Asian cultures.
