Though the nickname really comes from the large scar on his face that hes had since before he was a ghoul ironically enough. Its hard to tell now that his skin is destroyed, but he has lighter patches of skin of his face; this is a birthmark.

When he was a young man he used to frequent the bars and casinos in his town. He met Serene here and was always enamoured by her. She was indebted to the man that owned the bar, so she couldn't really leave. Desmond swore he would sneak her out one day and they would never return to that town or that somehow Desmond would take up odd jobs and pay off her debt, making her a free woman- but before they could do this; the town was mysteriously nuked. Who nuked them and why? No one really knows. The two took comfort in eachother now that all of their friends and family are gone, and now that they are ghouls.
