Basil

Basil comes in two flavors depending on setting. In high fantasy, he's a member of a pirate crew, loyal to his captain and living up a life of adventure far from the stuffy expectations of status and nobility he was once beholden to. He didn't gesitate upon leaving home to take on some light body modification, changing up his old, put-together appearance to fit in better with the crew of misfits that had welcomed him aboard. Sure, the captain's a stoic guy, but he's a great leader and Basil can tell he really loves his crew underneath that deadpan stare~ Basil has an upbeat attitude and is a constant source of optimism, though he's certainly savvy when it comes to serious situations. Some sea witch trying to catch them in a cleverly worded deal? Nuh-uh lady, show me the fine print! His sharp wit is often a surprise to those he crosses blades with on the high seas.

As for urban fantasy or even realistic settings, Basil is instead a different kind of rogue, working as a professional hacker. This blossomed from him finding ways to circumvent his over-bearing parents' attempts to keep him under constant surveillance and to force him to fit into whatever mold they picked. Needless to say, he ran away as soon as he possibly could. He made a strong case and managed to get emancipated, got started working in a little hole in the wall tech store, and worked his way up on his own to avoid owing his parents anything. He's managed to find a good niche for himself at this point, testing security and the like for virtual products and doing more base IT work on the side, and he's living very comfortably on his own. His parents try to butt into his life now and then, but so far he's done just fine keeping them out.
