BIOS

BIOS is your computer's basic input/output system. Before your pc loads its operating system, BIOS checks the connections between each part of the computer, including peripherals and internal components, to ensure they are all talking to each other correctly. This process is called the Power-on self-test. BIOS is meticulous and does not like to make mistakes. She knows if she does not do her job correctly, the computer will not run.

If all connections are good, BIOS passes control of the computer over to the operating system, and BIOS goes to sleep until the next boot. If connections are broken, BIOS can get stressed out. She will attempt to diagnose and alleviate the issue by running tests. If none of this works to restore the computer's connections, she will refuse to hand control to the operating system.

BIOS is generally optimisitc and peppy, however, they can get really worried when the computer can't boot. BIOS does everything in their power to ensure the computer can pass the Power-on self-test. Some external or hardware problems can't be resolved by BIOS alone, and this is where BIOS will rely on the user to do troubleshooting. When BIOS encounters a hardware issue, she sends a series of beeps, known as beep codes, through the computer's speakers. The length and amount of beeps determines what the issue is. It is then the user's responsibility to fix their machine so it can run.
