Dao Lan, Chapter 141/Episode 83.

"The Assassin Doll", Dao Lan ("ダオ・ラン", "Dao Ran") is one of the combatants of the Strawhat pirates and the illustrator of the crew. Although she has met the Strawhats and sailed with them for a short period of time on the Merry, Lan only joins the crew during the Dressrosa arc. Before joining Luffy and his crew, Lan was part of the Whitebeard pirates, in the 2nd division leaded by Portgas D. Ace. Prior to that, even though she traveled alongside the Spade pirates and was pratically considered part of the crew by Ace, Lan has never officially integrated the Spades.

Although, she is a pirate now, Lan previously worked for the World government as a Cipher Pol agent and was part of the CP9. She was also a bounty hunter during the period she first met Ace.

As a former CP9 agent, Lan has well developped fighting skills. She combines the Rokushiki techniques and the mastership of her whip to fight against enemies. Lan has also great speed, stamina and agility. Those are capacities she acquired during her time at the Pupa Orphanage. Her dream is to draw all the islands on the Grand Line and assembled all the drawings into a book. Although, she forgot about it during her time at the Pupa Orphange and the CP9, her encounter with Ace revived her old dream.

She currently has a bounty of RHI1O5e.png1,018,000,000.

Appearance

Lan is a slim young woman of average height with black hair and light blue eyes. She has two moles on her face : one in the middle of her left cheek and the other one on the bottom of her right cheek. She has a tattoo in tribute to Ace after his death, on the bottom of her nape right above a horizontal scar. She wears, since her childhood, a gold bracelet on her left wrist.

Lan can be seen wearing various outfits through the arcs of the serie. Her fashion evolves as time passes. From wearing mainly black clothes, she wears more and more colorful clothes as the story progresses. The only mainly consistant elements in her fashion are her shoes. Before the timeskip, she usually wears black boots whereas she wears brown sandals after the timeskip.

Lan carries around her whip at anytime. It is wrapped around her waist. She got the whip from Evan after she got enrolled in the CP9. It is a purple whip with a katana like blue handle. A light green lucky charm is attached to the end of the handle. Lan got the charm from Min as a way to wish her happiness. That is why the kanji of "Happiness" is written on the charm. During her time as a CP9 agent, Lan used to carry a dagger which was tied to her right thigh.

Before the timeskip

describe your picture

Lan's main features before the timeskip would be her long sleek black hair tucked behind her ears and a scar at the bottom of her nape. She got this scar after Deuce and Irene took out the chip that was implanted by the employees of the Pupa Orphanage. Under the scar, the remains of a tattoo can be seen which was a serial number given by the Pupa orphanage.

As a CP9 agent, Lan would wear a dark blue cape tied at the top by a red ribbon. She would also wear a blond blue eyed doll mask to hide her face on missions. It is because of that mask that her epithet "The Assassin Doll" was given to her by the revolutionaries. The epithet was then used by the governement after she became a pirate. Under the cape, Lan wore a tight black long-sleeved leather dress. The dress is opened on both sides of the legs with the dress being shorter in front. Although the neck is covered, the dress is actually opened right above the chest area. Along with the dress, Lan also wears black gloves, boots and knee fish net socks. Her long black hair are arranged into a tight low bun with strands of hair coming out of it.

When she first meets Ace, Lan wears a sleevless dark blue crop top, black skinny pants tucked inside black boots. She wears several belts as accessories around her torso and thighs, a logpose on her right wrist and a green pocket is hanging on her left thigh. As for her hair, it is put into a high ponytail. When traveling, Lan also wears a light brown cape on top in order to hide herself from the government.

After joining the Whitebeard pirates, Lan wears a spaghetti strapped top paired with knee length skirt and black boots. The skirt is opened in front of the right thigh and tied by a ribbon. Lan's hair are tied by a claw hair clip.

During her first meeting with the Strawhat pirates and the Little Garden arc, Lan is seen wearing a light pink buttoned cropped shirt, a black pleaded high waist skirt and black boots. The caption "Moon Flower" is written all around the bottom part of the shirt. Lan's hair are down and she wears golden ring earings on both ears. She also as a backpack with her. After escaping from Mr. 3's Giant Candle Service Set, parts of her clothes are burned and she ends up with a skirt cut on the side and a hole around the cleavage area.

During the Drum Island arc, Lan first wore a short sleeve buttoned shirt with a denim skirt. After arriving on the island, she was wearing a broawn winter coat with red fur on the collar and at the end of her sleeves. For the bottom, she wore black pants and boots.

On the way to Arabasta and during her encounter with Bonclay, Lan wore a white midi dress with poppies pattern. Later, during her short time in Arabasta, Lan is wearing a dancer outfit given by Sanji

During the search for Blackbeard with Ace and the fight in Banaro island, Lan is wearing a dark red leather zipped tank top with a black denim skirt and black boots. She carries around a backpack as well.

As a prisoner of Impel Down, Lan wears the prisoners' uniform which consists of a black and white striped long-sleeved shirt and pants with the same pattern. Her hair are tied in a low ponytail. After being rescued by Ivankov and during the Summit war, Lan is given a spaghetti straps fitted black minidress with laced black boots and uneven fish net stockings. Her hair is tied into a low bun.

During her training at , Lan mainly wears a beige tank top laced on the sides with a pair of shorts. She is barefoot when sparring but walks around with a pair of brown sandals.

After the timeskip

describe your picture

2 years after the Summit war, Lan's figure remains the same and the only striking changes in apparence are her haircut and the addition of a tattoo. Lan has cut her hair short and has now a thin choppy bang that grows longer on the sides. Her hair is still tucked behind her ears and look wavier than two years ago. As for her tattoo, it is a black tatto she got in Zô in homage to Ace. It represents the letter "A" for Ace with a spade inside and 2 faces, that come from Ace's hat, on both sides of the letter "A". Her main outfit after the timeskip consists of a spaghetti strap yellow top. The top is closed by a button in the front. The straps are tied together and have a little golden pearl at the end of each of them. The top is also decorated with orange ruffles at the edges of the top. For the bottom, Lan wears bootcut jeans decorated with red drops all around the bottom of each pantleg. The look is completed with a pair of brown sandals. As for her whip, Lan still has the same one as always and still ties it around her waist to carry it around.

At her arrival in Dressrosa, Lan wears a used dark brown cape to hide herself in public. In order to participate in the battle for the Mera Mera fruit in the Corrida Colosseum, Lan changes into a deep cut white dress. A large brown and gold belt is wrapped around the upper part of her abdomen. In order to keep her identity hidden, she is wearing a black and gold panther mask ornated with gold pearls. On her arms, she is wearing gold arms and wrists bracelets linked to one another by a whit sheet. As for the shoes, Lan wears simple brown sandals.

After the Dressrosa battle and on Zô, Lan is wearing light blue denim pants with a white T-shirt. "Welcome aboard" is written in red across the chest area. Half of Lan's hair are put into a ponytail tied by a white hair scrunchie. When leaving Zô, Lan can be seen wearing a white buttoned tank top with bootcut denim pants and brown sandals.

During the Whole Cake Island arc, Lan is changing into various clothes. Alongside with Nami and Carrot, Lan purchased clothing to blend in with the inhabitants of the isalnd. The outfit she bought consists of an off-shoulder blouse and a blue corset skirt. Two blue ribbons are tied on both sides of her hair. When meeting with the Fire Tank Pirates, she wore a black blazer dress with a dark red satin dress under it. Her hair is put into an updo and she also wears red pumps.

During the Wano Country arc, Lan first wears a green cardigan with an asymetrical midi skirt. She's later given by Kin'emon a white and red shrine maiden outfit with autumn leaves embroided on the sleeves. For the Onigashima raid, Lan changes into a dark blue kunoichi outfit with white and pale blue cloud patterns on it and a white nio-dasuki tied around her waist. As accessories, she wears suneate around her legs, knee fish net socks. Half of her hair is put into a bun tied by a gold hair stick sculpted into a fan at the end. In order to infiltrate Onigashima, Lan was given by Kin'emon another outfit and wore a dark blue Beasts Pirates's attire.

Personality

Lan's personality is subject to a lot of changes throughout the serie as she began as a cold and merciless character and ends up being a little more lievly and easy-going. Alongside Robin, Lan is one of the most calm and serious member of the crew. But unlike the archeologist, Lan sometimes questions her captain's decision and often stares at him dumbfounded while Robin laughs at Luffy's antics. She is rarely seen raising her voice or screaming at people. She talks calmly and rarely shows excess of emotions. However this part of her character seems to not apply to some characters such as Ace and Luffy, as their antics can be so over the top, Lan can't help but be dumbfounded and scold them.

When meeting Ace and the Spade pirates for the first time, Lan is shown as a cold and non expressive character. She was often compared to a robot. Having been trained for years in order to become an assassin, Lan only knew to obey and fight. She lacked a lot of social skills and would adress people in a polite and cold way. Nonetheless, Lan's greatest qualities are actually her empathy and virtuousness. Those qualities were so prominent that they prevented her from staying in the CP9. In addition to that, the time spent alongside Ace helped her opening up and expressing herslef. And so, by the time Lan meets Luffy, she had become more friendly and expressive. After the timeskip, Lan is even seen doing comical faces. Lan is also an honest person and would often states her opinion on people or situations with a straight face, especially whenever it is insulting. Lan, also, is not used to compliments and ends up diverting her eyes and blushing whenever someone does.

Being taught about laws and rules in the Pupa orphanage, Lan was quite strict on those aspects and was often criticizing Ace for any behaviour that would deviate from the law (mainly whenever he would leave a restaurant without paying). As time passes by, Lan learns to be more lenient. Apart from all of this, Lan has picked up some habits during her time as an assassin and is still struggling to get rid of them. Some of those habits consist of Lan waiting in front of any meal she's given until she's told to eat, contemplating wether she should eliminate minor enemies or witnesses, trying to finish off enemies she fight against, etc. While she got rid of the latter habit, the other ones are harder to disappear.

Since her childhood, Lan has always been quite naive and gullible. But her naivety has greatly increased during her days in Pupa oprhanage has she was never taught to question the world and the people around her. All she needed to do was to listen. Lan's credulity is notably shown when she believed Usopp when he told her he had 10,000 men with him during their first encounter on Little Garden. Lan's innocent side of her personality is also shown throughout her journey on the Grand Line as she easily gets mesmerized by all the new places she goes to.

  • Lan's autograph, which Bartolomeo got, consists simply of her full name with the beginning of her serial number crossed out.
  • Lan always waits for someone to tell her to eat every time she’s in front of a meal/snack. It’s a habit she got from living at the Pupa Orphanage and wasn’t able to get rid of it.
  • Before the timeskip, Lan also had the habit of trying to finish her enemies off. This can be seen on Drum Island where Lan was about to kill the soldiers who were preventing the villagers from saving Dalton. Vivi stops her as she was shocked by Lan’s unshaken act of violence. This habit has been resolved by the time she joins the Strawhats.

  • Lan smells like books and tea.
  • Lan's specific color is dark blue.
  • Lan's animal resemblance is a black mamba.

  • Lan's thoughts are "Ace, drawing, San, Min", and like the rest of the Straw Hats, "Friendship".

Author's Notes []

  • Why are we still here, just to suffer—

Overview

Lan could be considered as part of the most powerful crew members of the Strawhats, close to the Monster Trio (怪物三人組 Kaibutsu San-ningumi). Before getting on the Thousand Sunny, Lan's level was pretty close to Ace's as she could put up a fight against the young man and keep on with his level when they first met.

She's been trained since the age of 6 to become an assassin in the Pupa orhanage and so has mastered the 6 Rokushiki techniques required to be part of the CP9. In addition to the training provided in the Pupa oprhanage, Lan and the other children were regularly experimented on and were injected various products in order to increase exponentially their abilities such as stamina, strength and constitution. As Lan was able to survive the abuse, she aquired those abilities at a level highly above average for any human being.

EbKyUSv.jpg
Lan's bounty after the Wano Country arc.

When she was part of the CP9, she was considered to be in the top 4 of the group even though she was the youngest and latest member to join. On top of her hand-to-hand fighting skills and the Rokushiki techniques, Lan mainly uses a whip as her weapon. She uses it to slash, hit or pierce her enemies.

Lan's strength can also be shown through the threat she represented for the revolutionnaries. The woman was often sent on missions to kill revolutionnaries and would accomplish them without fail. As the number of revolutionnaries she eliminated was quite high, the revolutionnaires considered her a dangerous threat and gave her the epithet "The Assassin Doll" (暗殺の人形 Ansatsu no Ningyô).

Lan actually has the fifth highest bounty of the crew which is RHI1O5e.png1,018,000,000.

Physical Abilities

At the age of 6, Lan got abducted by the government in order to be put into a new scientific project which purpose was to be able to produce surhumane assassins who would work for the government. And so, while staying in the Pupa orphange, which was the place where that scientific project took place, Lan was subject to numerous experiments daily. Those experiments were mainly injections of dangerous chemical products that would hopefully modify the subject's physiology and therefore capacities. Lan was able to survive all of those ordeals and became the Pupa orphanage's only perfect product. Unlike any average person, Lan's physical abilities are way above the normal. Her speed, stamina, strength and constitution have been increased considerably. Lan's incredible physical abilities are particularily well shown during the Impel Down and the Marineford arc where she could easily keep up with Luffy while fighting against numerous enemies, sometimes way bigger than her.

Although, Lan's physical abilities seem to be on the same level, speed is her forte. Her light weight combined with the Soru technique allow her to seem like she is at different places at the same time in a fight. However, her speed doesn't limit itself to her movement but also her attack. Lan's attacks aren't as powerful as the Monster Trio but she strikes fast and always go for vital points.

Lan's abnormal resistance and constitution is also shown throughout the story. She seems to resist longer in harsh environments and climates. On her arrival on Drum island, she didn't seem to be bothered by the cold and decides to wear a coat to not stand out too much. In Impel down, as Luffy and she went down the levels, she was the least affected by the heat and the cold in the different levels. It was also revealed in Impel Down that Lan has some kind of a poison resistance that allowed her to stay conscious after their defeat against Magellan and help Bonclay to protect Luffy from wolves on level 5. It has to be noted that Lan is not totally immune to poison as Magellan's poison still affected her to some degree.

Whip mastery

hvkYBP3.jpg
Lan using her whip on a treasure cruise card.

Although Lan is a well rounded fighter in hand-to-hand combat, she always uses her whip against stronger and dangerous enemies. She has been using the same whip since she was a CP9 agent and has mastered it perfectly. Depending on the way she swings it, the range and the type of her attacks change. On top of that, Lan combines her Rokushiki techniques and Haki to her whip in order to increase the number and types of attacks she can launch. If she works in a team, Lan often uses her whip to catch enemies and bring them closer to comrades who fight in a close disatnce range.

Her basic attacks consist of strong regular whiplashes. Depending on the power put into the wiplashes, they can either strike or slash her opponents. On top of that, Lan waves her whip in different ways to vary the direction of her attacks. She can, for example, makes ripples horizontally and vertically, rotations in a specific direction or around her. Lan likes to change her hold on her whip depending on the distance of her opponents. She doesn't restrain herself to the handle and sometimes holds the end of the whip and strikes her enemies with the handle of the whip.

In order to increase the range of her hits beyond the limit of her whip's length, the movement of her whip in the air can create sharp gusts of wind. Lan has a special move she uses based on that technique. She uses it whenever she wants to hit numerous opponents at the same time and in different locations around her. This time again, depending on the way she waves her whip the shape of the wind she creates varies. Those shapes includes tornadoes, circles or arrows.

Before the timeskip, Lan was traveling a lot with Ace and so she learnt to fight with him. And so, they both developped a technique where they would combine Ace's fire and the winds Lan creates to increase the power and the range of Ace's fire but also adding a slashing property to it. After Ace's death, Lan went to Zô and trained along side the minks. Although she's not a mink, Lan learned to discharge electricity through her whip and can now blend in electricity and wind together. This new ability enabled her to create fire on her whip and recreate the technique she used to do with Ace and use it on her own.

Lan can also coat Haki around her whip and so, fight against devil fruits users. The Haki also increases the resistance and the power of the whip, allowing her to multiply damages to a greater level. Using Haki can also let Lan strengthen her whip and pierce through more resistant enemies or objects.

During the Wano country arc, Lan started to fight with 2 whips. With a second whip, Lan increases considerably the number of hits and she can combine a fire attack and an Electro one into a single attack.

Rokushiki

As a former CP9 agent, Lan has mastered the 6 Rokushiki techniques required to enter the organization. Lan was part of the ones with the best mastery of Rokushiki within the CP9. Although she is able to use all the techniques in a powerful manner, Lan has a preference for some of them and so have developed stronger variations of them. Those techniques are the Rankyaku, the Geppô and the Soru. Lan has learned all those techniques at the age of 14 and was expected to reach the same level of Lucci at some point.
After developing her own fighting style, Lan has started to combine the different Rokushiki techniques to the use of her whip. The Rankyaku technique coming from her whip has greater range and power. By adding the Geppô technique, she can abruptly change the direction of her whip. Using the Tekkai technique allows her to have stronger hits and to block enemies' attacks easily. After the timeskip, Lan takes it a step further and has added Electro or fire to her regular Rankyaku moves as well as those from her whip. Just like Lucci, Lan has also mastered the ultimate attack of the Rokushiki style : the Rokuogan. However, unlike Lucci, Lan doesn't use her fists to launch the attack but her whip. After turning her whip into a lasso, she swings it towards an opponent and before the whip can touch them, a devastating shock wave comes out in their direction and causes severe internal injuries. Lan has developed this technique after leaving the CP9 but only uses it as her trump card as it is an exhausting technique. After the timeskip, her Rokuogan technique evolved as she mixes in her Haki and Electro in the attacks. She can also, now, launch 2 Rokuogan at the same time since she has 2 whips now.

Electro

Even though Electro is a technique specific to the Mink tribe, Lan has learnt to use it by observing the minks during her training in Zô after the Summit war. There is no particular explanation to the developement of this new ability but Lan has admitted wanting to copy the minks' technique and somehow succeeded in developing her own electro technique. It was revealed during the Zô arc that Lan's electro is actually a little different from the minks' elctro technique as she is not a mink. Nevertheless, on top of being useful in combat, this technique has helped Lan being accepted as part of the Mink tribe.

Weapons

Whips

65Gjnxk.png
Lan's whip

For more information on her style of fighting, please click here : Whip Mastery

Lan got her whip as a present for graduating from the Pupa orphanage and for entering the CP9, from Evan. The whip has been made specifically for Lan as Evan actually reviewed Lan's statistics and capacities before getting the weapon for her. It also has the particularity to be implemented with fragments of seastone, allowing her to fight against logia type users. She has no particular attachment to the weapon in itself but has always kept the weapon since she's been used to the handle and the feel of it. However, Lan can still wield other whips perfectly, as shown in Impel Down when she stole Sadi's whip.

After destroying the Pupa orphanage and meeting with San and Min again on Moonhwa island, Lan was given a charm made by Min. The old woman wished for her happiness and so gifted her a charm with the kanji of "Happiness" embroided on it. Lan hangs the charm at the end of the whip's handle and considers it her treasure. She dearly cares for it and was seen being upset after being freed from Mr. 3's Giant Candle because it got cover with wax. In an other instance, Lan was conficasted her weapon upon arriving in Impel Down and so before leaving the prison for Marineford, Lan insisted on retrieving at least the charm hanging from the weapon. Thankfully, Lan was able to retrieve the whole weapon thanks to Ivankov and his okamas.

After getting her hand on a rare type of leather in Big Mom's treasure room, Lan was looking for a suitable handle to make a new whip out of it. Upon arriving in Wano, Lan asked Usopp to build her one and with the help of O-Tama, who braided the leather strands, Lan finally got her second whip and trained fighting with 2 whips for the Onigashima battle. Just like the first one, Lan has a charm attached to her second whip. This was a gift from O-Tama who had embroided the kanji of Strength onto it.

Knife

When Lan was a CP9 agent and a bounty hunter, she can be seen hanging a middle sized knife on her right thigh. The knife is neatly put in a red metallic case. The knife has no guard and a old yellow curved bolster for decoration. Bandages are wrapped around the handle for a better grip. Lan rarely uses this knife and kept it to use it for hunting and preparing food when she's in the wild. However, she's no longer seen with it after leaving the CP9 definitively.

Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki

Lan is able to use the Kenbunshoku Haki. She's been seen using it even before the timeskip during the Impel Down and Marineford arcs. At that time she was mainly using it to predict enemies' attacks but she was also using it during her assassination missions in order to locate her targets and kill them..

Busoshoku Haki

After the timeskip, Lan has also acquired the ability to use the Busoshoku Haki. She can be seen coating her whips but also different parts of her body while fightnig in order to increase her power and her defense. The imbuement increases so much her powers that she only uses against serious opponents but also against devil fruit users.

Trivia

  • Lan is a terrible navigator. She knows nothing about navigation and often gets lost on seas whenever she sails alone, if not everytime. On her first encounter with the Strawhats, she had actually been lost on seas for days and had fainted from starvation and dehydration. Thankfully, she was rescued by Luffy and her friends in time.
A similar situation happened when she met Ace for the first time. Because she was starving for days, she attacked Ace in order to get the rewards from his bounty and use the money to eat.
The last time she almost die from starvation and dehydration after being lost in seas, was when she tried to chase after the Blackbeards and got rescued by Zunesha who was passing by.
  • Lan can't cook and dislike doing it because she's embarrassed of her poor skills. Her cooking skills were first revealed when part of the Strawhats were going to Whole Cake island. Because the crew didn't want Nami to cook for them, they first turned towards Lan hoping she would help them. Lan tried to make sandwiches but failed miserably. The majority of the group deemed the sandwiches to be unedible except from Luffy.
  • Lastly, Lan is not very good at crafting. This was shown when she was in Wano Country with Ace. They both learnt kasa weaving from O-Tama but despite all the efforts she put into it, the kasa came out nothing like one.

Past

Childhood

Lan grew up in the Grand Line, on an island named : Moonhwa island. It is a little rural island where people live peacefully. The island rarely gets travelers passing by and isn't well known worldwide. However it is known by islands nearby for its unique flower : the Moonhwa. This flower only grows on this island. It is an orchid that grows in fresh water. Its particularity is that it only blooms at night.

Lan’s family has grown the moonhwa for generations and sells them as tea leaves for a living to the other inhabitants of the island. Everyday, Lan’s father would go downtown with sacs of dried moonhwa petals and sells them diligently. One day, Lan got to accompany her father and as she wandered around in the village, she came across the village's library. There, she met the owner, Min, who caught the little girl looking through the pages of a book filled with illustrations drawn by a an unknown sailor. Lan and Min started to befriend each other over the book and as gift for visiting her deserted library, Min gifted the illustration book to the little girl. However, Song, Lan's father, ended up buying it as he couldn't accept a gift for free.
Back at home, Lan and her father were firstly scolded by Cay, Lan's mother. She deemed books unnecessary as they needed to save as much money as possible to be able to live comfortably. She eventually gave in and let Lan have the precious book at the condition that no more unnecessary purchases were allowed.

Starting that day, Lan would look at the book's illustrations daily and she would start dreaming about the world outside Moonhwa island. She dreamed of herself sailing on the sea and living adventures in the sea, visiting places as magical as the ones in her book. She dreamed of drawing herself all those breathtaking places and put them into an illustration book of her own. Lan also started to tag along with her father to the village everyday in order to meet with Min and spend time with her. Lan learned how to read and write from Min. And so, at some point, Lan began writing about her dreams in a diary every night. Cay ended up discovering the said diary and the thought of her daughter sailing in the Grand Line was for her uninimaginable. Cay wanted for her daughter to take after the Dao family business. Lan would find a diligent man, marry him and have children of her own who would themselves take after the business. Sailing on the seas was too dangerous for Lan. Cay couldn't accept this dream and forbid her daughter from having such ridiculous thoughts. A huge argument broke between the two but Lan ended up complying to her mother's wishes. She started to diligently learn more about gardening and the art of tea infusion. But although she liked learning those new skills her mind would still wander on the seas. Her relationship with her mother also declined and became awkward at home. Lan was still upset at her and was too young to understand her mother’s heart. And so she felt like her own mother didn’t love her and didn’t want her to be happy.

Noticing Lan's melancholy, San, her little brother, gave her a sketchbook where she could practice drawing. San wanted to sail on the sea as well and thought that his sister needed someone to protect her. Moved by the gift, Lan kept the sketchbook preciously and started to draw on her own free time. She would wander around in the forest nearby, in their garden or in the village and draw. But her favorite place to draw from was definitely the sea. And so she would, at least once a day, go to a cliff out of the forest where the view on the sea was the best. There she sat and drew the ocean in front of her.

Pupa Orphanage

One day, as she was out to draw at the cliff she usually goes to, Lan met a Frost Evan. The man was looking for the village and Lan naively showed him the way to it. On their way, Lan was trying to get to know the strange man better. She was intrigued by him as he seemed to have traveled to many places. She wanted to know if the outside world was as extraordinary as her dreams. Evan seemed totally disinterested in the little girl and was more preoccupied by their surroundings. Evan was actually in Moonhwa island to assess the environment for a plan of his. Once in the village, the soldier thanked Lan and before walking away, told her that she has been a great help to the World Government. Lan didn't really understand the meaning of those words but still felt proud to be of help.
Days later, Lan ran acciedntly into Min. Lan had been forbidden to visit the old lady since her argument with her mother. But, Lan missed spending time with the old lady and disobeyed her mother that day and stayed at Min's library. Lan confessed to Min her mother’s opposition to her dream and shared how upset she is at her mother. Min listened to Lan with kindness and reminded her that no one in this world loves her more than her parents. Lan was starting to understand her mother's heart a little bit and decided to try making up with Cay as soon as she'd be home. However, that day, Moonhwa island was subject to a pirate attack. Every house, every building was saccaged that night. It seemed like the pirates were looking for kids to capture. Min, who was trying to protect Lan got shot. And although Lan's home was spared at first, the pirates soon found it as they were chasing after Lan who was trying to run away to her home. That night, Lan had to witness her father's murder. She had to let go of her mother without being able to make up with her. And after their parents' death, Lan and San, who were hiding in their house's basement, were about to be found out when Lan decided to sacrifice herself and let herself be captured alone as the pirates at their home were actually unaware of San's existence. Her plan worked and Lan left her little brother, hoping he would be able to survive. Before getting into the pirate ship, Lan was drugged and put unconscious amongst other children around her age in the ship. When she woke up, she and the other children were not tied anymore and were now surrounded by marines. She was told that they've been rescued from pirates who intended to sell them as slaves. Lan felt relieved an instant but soon felt into despair once again as she was told that none of the children could be brought home as the pirates had completely destroyed their home islands before leaving. That blatant lie made no sense but Lan who was only 6 at that time completely fell for it. And she was not the only one, all the other children did as well. In addition to that, before they could even think about grieving their loved one, they were announced that they'd be taken care of by the governement in an orphanage managed by it : the Pupa orphanage.

Lan's serial number tattoo
The Pupa orphanage was a special facility build and financed by the World Government. It is publicly known as a place where orphans all around the world could come and be raised safely. It was the very first one of its kind and that project was initiated by Frost Evan, a doctor and research scientist working for the government. However, the main objective of the orphanage was to gather in one place children who would be trained and genetically and biologically modified to become soldiers for the world government. Evan was the one who created this new project. He firmly believed he would be able to produce perfect soldiers that could be used freely by the government. His soliders had to be devoted to the World Government, devoided of any emotion and be incredibly powerful. The government needed them to be able to kill anyone in any situation. If he could succeed in forming a single "ideal" soldier out of the Pupa Orphanage it would be a big step for him as a scientist. But Evan needed a lot of subjects and to get them he made deals with pirates. They had to attack small and unknown islands and kidnap all the children they could find for him. The plan was then to make the children believe that they were rescued by the government and that they were now in its care.
It is in this context that Lan and the other children arrived at the infamous place. At the orphanage, all children were tattooed a serial number based on their order of arrival, at the bottom of their nape. Lan’s number was 24124. The number only had an administrative purpose and was also there to dehumanize the children. Under that tattoo, a chip, connected to their nervous system, was actually implanted unbeknownst to the poor children. Its purpose was actually to administrate a punishment to disobedient children. On top of that, they were also given uniforms. Their bedrooms were no different than a cell. The srtict minimum was put in and the children had a single tiny window that was to high to be looked through. The first days at the Pupa orphanage were quite normal and were no different than any regular orphanage. However without the children realizing it, the place slowly unveiled its true nature. As days passed, they were more dehumanized. With no home and no family left, they were also ripped off of their names. Their serial number was now their name. They were not here to be rescued but to be shaped into top soldiers devoting their lives for the world government.

Lan's uniform at The Pupa orphanage
Lan's schedule at the orphanage was tight. She had to attend various classes, training sessions and most importantly medical visits.
During classes, all kind of false information would be poured onto the children's mind. The purpose was to brainwash them and enslave them to the world government. They were needed to hate any individual or group that the government deemed to be a threat to justice. The list naturally included pirates and revolutionaries. Lan was taught to literally worship the World Nobles. Orders were everything and disobeying would not be tolerated. Lan had to eat when she was told to, wake up when she was told to, shower whan she was told. She had to wait for orders for every action she had to accomplish.
During the medical visits, Lan's health and body constitution would be evaluated meticulously and depending on the results, a personalized "treatment" would be provided. And so, during meals, Lan would be given on top of food, some pills to take in daily. "Treatments" would not stop there. As Lan grew older and so, progressed in her formation, a new form of "treatment" was implemented. Each week at night, she would be called out to a secret laboratory made specifically for this new treatment made by Evan. Lan, like other chosen children, would be injected the treatment through her veins. The treatment had the purpose to enable the subject to surpass human capabilities by modifying the genome. The objective was to increase stamina, constitution, strength, tolerance, immunity or eyesight. Although, Evan and his employees spend a lot of time on creating all those different treatments, they were far from perfect and secondary effects were extremely hard to withstand. And so, Lan would squirm from the unbearable pain all night, every week.
Lastly, Lan was taught basic fighting skills, weaponry, filature techniques, disguising techniques and of course the 6 Rokushiki tehcniques.
Life was hard but Lan endured it patiently for years because she believed that following all the rules and attending to all the different classes would make her a better person, just like she was told. She wanted to be strong and be able to save people from losing their family. She didn't want anyone to go through the pain to lose every one they care for. Frost Evan took advantage of her kind heart and promised her that she could do all of that as long as she keeps on obeying.
Even though Lan was able to survive through all the horrible ordeals of the Pupa orphanage the other children that got in with her did not have the same fate as her. Some got killed for going against the rules, other couldn't withstand the secondary effect of their treatments or the harsh training sessions. And so, for years after the creation of the Pupa orphanage, Evan was not able to produce any perfect soldier like he promised the marine admiral Akainu Sakazuki. The admiral was starting to loose patience as he was the main person investing into Evan's project. However, Evan didn't loose hope because after years of failures, he could finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Lan was the very first child to survive 3 of the weekly injections. Each week, each months and each years she kept surpassing Evan's expectations. She was for him, the accomplishment of year of work and research. If she could successfully become a soldier for the government, he'd be able to gain as much respect as Vegapunk does.

10 years eventually passed and Lan was 16 years old when she left the Pupa orphanage. She had became an accomplished combatant, devoted to fight for the World Government. She also became Evan's biggest success as she was accepted in the CP9 as an assassin.

Days in the CP9

Lan entered the CP9 at the age of 16 and was the youngest member which made her the 2nd youngest person to join. At the time of her entry the team was composed of Spandam -the leader- Lucci, Kaku, Kalifa, Jabra, Blueno, Kumadori and Fukurô.

Lan got used pretty easily to all the missions she was given. She quickly became infamous amongst the revolutionaries as she was often sent on mission to dismantle their bases and kill them. She killed so much of them, the revolutionaries nicknamed her the "Assassin Doll" referring to the doll mask she always wear on mission to cover up her face. Lan's epithet even reached the ears of the revolutionary army's higher ups such as Dragon and Sabo. Lan, at that time, showed absolutely no remorse killing people but didn't seemed to enjoy it either. She would go where she was told to and execute the orders. Besides the revolutionaries, Lan pretty quickly gain attention from her colleagues. Even though she wasn't the strongest of the team, the members were really impressed by her abilities and even Lucci seemed to acknowledge her capacities. Lan was expected to be amongst the best of the CP9.

After spending a year in the CP9, Lan became one of the most respected and feared CP9 agent. She was pratically on the same power level as Kaku and Jabra. Her cold demeanor was intimidating but also fascinating to the navy soldiers and lower rank agents.
A year ago, half of the team was sent to Water 7 on an undercover mission while Lan and the rest took on various missions. During one of them, Lan was supposed to stop a rebellion and help the royals of a kingdom against revolutionaries. However, a civilian came up against her and try to fight her for his and the citizens' freedom. As he was opposing her and also the World Government, Lan was about to kill him but the civilian's older sister came in between them to protect her younger brother. Lan froze at the scene as she remembered her little brother, San. She could relate to the woman in front of her. She understood fully how much she wanted to protect him. For the first time since she became an assassin, Lan hesitated. At that moment, Lan was suddenly attacked by a revolutionary. It was Sabo. Sabo came personally on this mission, in hopes he could confront the Assassin Doll. The attack made Lan's mask fall of and so her face was revealed to Sabo. This was the day of their first encounter and Sabo made sure to engrave her face in his mind. Sabo reprimanded Lan and made her realize how much she has dehumanized her victims. Lan came to realize that she's been inflicting the same pain, she suffered in her childhood, to other people. She tried to justify her actions under the name of justice but it still didn't felt right to her. The sudden confrontation with the reality scared Lan who couldn't keep on as a CP9 agent. After getting away from Sabo and the revolutionaries, Lan didn't came back to Enies Lobby and cut any communication with the government.

Days with the Spade Pirates

A year passed since Lan run away from the CP9 and the World Government. She turned into a bounty hunter, using the rewards money she earned to get food. Despite her terrible navigation skills, she had managed to survive on her own thanks to her abnormal constitution and luck.
After spending days without food and water, Lan had finally arrived on an inhabited island : Randam island. Shrotly after her arrival, the Spades pirates also stopped by the same island. Lan heard about their arrival and was extremely interested in Ace. Ace had become an infamous rookie pirate and his bounty was pretty high for a rookie. After Ace ended up alone in a deserted alley of the town, Lan launched a surprise attack on the pirate. Ace was able to avoid the attack and attacked back. A fight between the 2 ensued until they were both stopped by the loud growl coming from Lan's stomach. After learning that Lan was after his bounty to have money for a meal, he kindly invited her to a restaurant. Horribly hungry, Lan accepted right away. But before going to a nearby restaurant, Ace made sure to politely introduce himself to Lan, even though she already knew his name. Lan tried to introduce herself back but instead of giving her name, she first told him her serial number. After realizing her mistake, she properly gave him her full name.
Once at the restaurant, both ate to their hearts' content. As they talked about their little altercation, they both discovered each other's weird habits. Lan wouldn't touch her plate until Ace made a remark and told her she could eat while Ace suddenly fell asleep as he was eating. As they spent time there, Ace was getting intrigued by Lan's odd and mysterious character while Lan was curious about the overly friendly pirate. After finishing every single plate they ordered, Ace was about to leave the restaurant but was stopped by Lan who wondered why he wasn't going to pay for the meal. Ace didn't have any money on him and so didn't plan on paying at all from the beginning. Outraged by Ace's attitude, Lan planned on handing him over to the marines. Ace, of course, refused and an argument broke out leading to a fight in the restaurant. The commotion caught the attention of the marines and Ace's crewmates. A group of marines, led by Narsis an overly narcistic marine captain, arrived on the scene. However, as soon as Narsis entered the restaurant he was hit on both sides of his face by Lan and Ace. The fight immediately stopped. Ace was confused by Narsis appearance while Lan immediately entered into a military posture and apologized to the captain. As Narsis got himself together back, Lan and Ace began a new argument while indirectly disrespecting the marine captain in front of them. Annoyed by this total lack of respect from both of them, Narsis ordered his men to arrest the both of them. Ace managed to escape but Lan obediently followed the marines and was put behind bars. Her crime : hitting Narsis on the face.
A few days had passed since Lan's arrest and the Spade pirates were about to leave Randam island now that their logpose had fully recharged. However, Ace finally learnt that Lan was behind bars for days. Feeling guilty it might have been because of him, he decided to go and free her, to his crewmates' dismay.
During her time in her cell, Lan was calmly sitting on the floor, waiting patiently for her imprisonment to be over. Unbeknownst to her, Ace had entered the marine base and ran into Narsis who planned to hand over Lan to the government after learning she was actively wanted. Ace couldn’t let him do that and engage in a fight against the marine captain and knocked him out. However their fight made the floor collapse, leading Ace directly to the cells room. Ace found the key to her cell and opened it. Now she was free to do whatever she wanted. But she didn't know what she wanted to do at all. Her cells door was wide opened but Lan couldn't take a step out. Ace saw it and asked what was wrong. Instead of answering his question she asked him the reason why he became a pirate. She couldn't understand why and how a (most of the time) honest man like could become a pirate, an outlaw. Ace simply answered that he wanted to live a life of freedom and live adventures on the sea. Knowing that she was wanted as well, Ace offered her his hand and invited her on his ship. His answer made her remember her old childhood dream and so, like drawn into Ace's free spirit, Lan took his hand and stepped out of her cell, accepting to travel on his ship.

Weeks have passed since Lan joined the Piece of Spadille and on her journey with the Spade pirates, she reached a winter island : Taïga Mount, a seemingly inhabited island full of rare and exotic animals. During the exploration of the island, Lan strayed away from Ace and Deuce and encountered a wounded giant lynx. Lan kindly helped the poor animal by taking out a bullet from his wound and putting on bandages using her cape. After her encounter, she joined back the two men. The exploration was tensed as Deuce was wary of Lan since she declared she would hand them all over to the marines as soon as she sees anything illegal going on the ship.
After walking in the deep forest, the three of them finally reached the end of it and found a village surrounded by wood walls tightly guarded. Since Deuce didn't want their crew to get into troubles, he advised Ace and Lan to return back to the ship and stay low until they could leave the island. Ace was obviously disappointed but listened to his friend and went back to the ship. Lan was disappointed as well as she wanted to see how the village looked like but she didn't show it at all and followed the two men. After returning to the ship, Deuce informed his crewmates about the suspicious village and advised them to be careful as well. That night, Lan left the pirates' camp to go find back the giant lynx she met earlier that day. She found him asleep at the exact same place she left him. She started to attend to his wound properly but was interrupted by Ace who followed her. Ace joined her and observed her giving care to the lynx. The animal woke up and got scared to see the two of them. Ace reassured him by giving him food Lan had brought along with a medical kit. Lan was impressed by Ace's gesture and learnt that Ace used to live in a forest filled with various beasts when he was a child. Ace then got carried away and started to talk about his childhood episodes alongside Luffy and Sabo. Lan attentively listened to him and felt a connection with Ace as she had a little brother as well. She felt like she could understand his love for Luffy. However, Ace wasn't the only one she got closer to. The lynx they helped was starting to open up to them. Startled by the show of affection at first, Lan answered to the animal's gesture and felt warmth for the first time in 12 years. Ace and Lan ended up naming the lynx Kotatsu that night. Spending time with the animal somehow brought for the first time in years a smile on Lan's face, unknown to the young woman. Ace did catch on it and didn't miss his chance to notice it to her, teasing her in the process. Lan denied it and started to argue with the pirate. Feeling that they've become a little closer, Ace boldly asked Lan if she had any sibling like him. Lan first hesitated but finally admitted she had a younger brother. From her tone and her phrasing, Ace could understand immediately that it was a painful subject for the woman and so he changed the subject. He started to tell her about Sabo and how he died trying to get free. He confessed to her that Sabo was one of the reasons he became a pirate. Lan silently listened to him and seemed to be confused about Ace's character. She was always taught that pirates were evil beings that needed to be arrested or eliminated but she just couldn't sense any form of evilness coming from Ace or any of his comrade.
Next day, Lan woke up early and went into the forest alone once again to check on Kotatsu. Lan arrived at last night's spot but was disappointed to see it empty. However she noticed footprints and wheels' prints on the ground. Lan followed them and was led to the village that they discovered the day before. Hiding behind bushes, Lan's eyes landed on a cage filled with animals and she could immediately recognize Kotatsu among them. The cage was being brought inside the wooden walls and was guarded with armed men. Lan just kept on watching and was unbale to move from her hiding spot. She didn't know what to do. She couldn't even understand herself why she followed the prints all the way there. She, who lived obeying orders for more than 10 years, was unable to make a move on her own. After being lost in her thoughts for a moment, Lan decided to go back to the pirates' camp and was about to wake Ace up in order to do him a report on her findings but she was stopped by Deuce who thought she was attempting at his captain's life. The misunderstanding spread like fire and the whole crew was ganging up against her in order to protect Ace. Ace woke up from the ruckus. Lan took this opportunity to tell him about Kotatsu's capture. Not wasting any minute, Ace urged his crew to go and free the lynx with him. Confused, Lan was surprised at how fast Ace took his decision but tagged along and saw Ace's words like orders she could follow.
The original plan was simple : some of them would knock down the guards and disguise themselves as the guards to infiltrate the village. Once in the village they needed to look for Kotatsu and find a way to take him out and bring him back to his home..
Ace, Lan and Deuce were part of the team that would infiltrate the village. While a group was diverting the guards, they easily knocked down a few guards and put their clothes on. They managed to get inside the wooden walls and discovered that they just infiltrated a poaching base. After overcoming the surprise and shock, the three of them went through the different cages in search of Kotatsu. However, Kotatsu was nowhere to be found. The only place left to look in was the facility built in the middle of the village. Lan and Deuce tried to think of a way to enter the facility incognito but before they could come up with a plan they heard an explosion coming from the said facility. It was Ace, who in rage, destroyed the facility's door. Lan was too stunned to say anything and just looked at Deuce in disbelief. Deuce understood that she wants to ask what was wrong with Ace but they didn’t have time for that and they both decided to follow Ace and go in. The rest of the group that was infiltrating with them covered their back and were trying to stop the poachers from pursuing the 3 of them. They all boarded into an elevator going underground. Once inside the engine, Lan scolded Ace for being careless as they were supposed to infiltrate the place, not destroy it. Ace argued back that infiltrating would take too long and that destroying this place would be a service to all the animals living on the island. Lan couldn’t argue back but she still pointed out that now because of his actions it would be more difficult to take Kotatsu out of this place. Ace fought back by saying that taking out a giant lynx is not something you can do in secret anyway. Deuce just watched them bicker and tried to calm them down. He apologized on behalf of Ace and he should have warned her that could have happened. However, he wanted them to focus again on their mission. The elevator finally stopped. They carefully came out and discoverede a tunnel made of steel. They run through it and at the end of it they discovered a submarine port built underground. The place is filled with marines. A submarine is waiting to be filled with animals, furs and taxidermy. A poacher who looked like the leader of the poachers is receiving money from a marine. Lan watched the scene in confusion. But, without any warning, she stepped out and called out the marine. Ace and Deuce watched her in disbelief. Completely in denial and naively, Lan requested the marine to arrest the poachers right away as what they were doing was wrong. The marine and the poachers’ leader stared at her dumbfounded and bursted out in laughter. Lan got confused but insisted. But the men had no intention to listen to her. All the "goods" being loaded into the submarine were meant to be given to the celestial dragons. The marine introduced hismelf and revealed to her that he was in charge of bringing all the goods safely to the World Nobles. All the animals on this island belonged to them. Lan freezed and was trying to process all the information she was given. Ace couldn't stand watching and listening to this nonsense anymore and dashed out of his hiding spot. He was about to lay a hand on the marine but instinctively Lan stopped him and sent him flying away. In the general confusion, Ace, Deuce and Lan were arrested and put in a cage.
Ace was infuriated and so was Deuce. Deuce started to speculate that she must have brought them here on purpose to hand them over to the government. Lan just stayed silent which irritated the boys even more. She finally spoke and blankly responded that no one should go against the World Nobles. Absolutely disagreeing with Lan's way of thinking, Ace headbutted Lan in frustration and took out his anger on her before switching to the cage's bars. Lan seemed hurt by Ace's words but didn't utter a word and stayed still until Deuce talked to her. He explained to her that if Ace was so angry at her was because he was really disappointed. Ace didn’t want to be enchained in rules and laws. He didn’t think that any human has more value than another. Lan listened carefully to him and suddenly her attention was caught by Ace’s voice calling out for Kotatsu. Lan's eyes searched for the animal and she finally found him. The lynx was forcefully taken out of a cage and dragged into the submarine. Kotatsu’s scared figure was unbearable to her as it reminded her of her younger self. She then remembered why she had worked so hard all these years, the reason why she wanted to be strong. Something awakened in her and suddenly, she swiped Ace's feet under him, making him fall on the ground. The pirate was about to yell at her once again but was surprised to see the woman standing up. In an instant, Lan swung her leg and a strong wind could be felt coming out from the action. Lan's attack easily cut off the cage's bars and continued its track towards the chain attached around Kotatsu's neck. The chain got easily cut off and Kotatsu was now free. The commotion created panic amongst the animals. The poachers and soldiers tried their best to calm them down but to no avail. Lan calmly walked out of the cage and headed towards Kotatsu. Getting rid of her poacher disguise to be more comfortable, she revealed herself completely to the marines. She launched an attack using her whip, throwing dozens of Rankyaku around her in an instant. In one move only she managed to put a majority of the enemy out of combat. The marine captain recognized her immediately as the wanted CP9 agent and revealed her infamous nickname : "The Assassin Doll". He then tried to convince her to stop getting in his way. He tried to make her recall that the animals belonged to the World Nobles. Lan seemed swayed by his words at first but feeling Kotatsu behind her, she couldn’t let him go. She fought to protect the weak ones, so that they wouldn’t lose their home and family like she did. That’s why she couldn’t let this place exist. She was going to destroy it. The marine thought she had gone crazy. But Lan was finally seeing clearer and prepared herself to launch another attack. In the meantime, Deuce and Ace overheard their conversation as they were evacuating the animals out of the facility. To think that Lan was willing to get captured a minute ago, Deuce found her as unpredictable as Ace, who joined Lan to destroy the underground port. However, the marines managed to escape.
The 3 individuals finally got out to the surface with all the animals kept underground who decided to take revenge on the poachers fighting at the surface. The Spade pirates along with the animals managed to wipe the poachers and destroy the little village as well. Proud of this achievement, Ace declared a party to celebrate it along with the animals. During the party, Lan spent some time with Kotatsu and apologized to him. Ace joined her and apologized as well for yelling at her. Lan didn’t mind. In fact, she felt like she was the one who should apologize to him for hitting him. Ace chuckled and couldn’t help thinking that she always had to argue with him. And just like he expected she argued back denying his statement. Not arguing back, Ace switched subject and complimented her on her strength and fighting skills. He was really impressed and wondered where she learned all those moves. Not comfortable enough to reveal everything, Lan just replied that her younger brother died because she wasn’t strong enough to protect him correctly. And so, she trained for years to be able to help those in need. She thought that, that way she could prevent people from going through what her brother and she lived but the world is more complicated than she thought. She didn’t know what was right and what was wrong anymore. Ace simply answered that acting for someone we care for will never be wrong. Today she saved Kotatsu and the other animals because she cared for them. So there’s no need to worry about it being right or not. It was the right answer for her. That’s all that mattered. Ace was sure her little brother would be proud of her. Lan was obviously touched by his words but felt embarrassed to show emotions and remained silent. Ace didn't mind and wanted her to tell him more about her brother. And just like that, they started to share stories about their respective siblings all night while petting Kotatsu.
The next day, it was time for the pirates to leave. Kotatsu decided to go with them as he had formed a bond with Ace and Lan. Meanwhile, far away from Taïga Mount, Evan received a report from the marine Lan met. He had been waiting long enough and decided it was time for Lan to come back where she belonged.

After leaving Taïga Mount, the Spade pirates have finally arrived on a new island : Lavender Harbor. During their trip to this new island, Lan was able to get to know the other crew members better and was finally accepted. Knowing that she was wanted by the government made them think that she wasn’t an enemy after all. Along with the other women of the crew, Lan was led to clothes stores to try on new clothes. In new clothes, a new feeling was overwhelming her as she had never bought anything for herself before. She was thankful for the crew members who helped her choose and advised her. She also finally took time to admire the island they’ve landed on. The streets were full of citizens. All kinds of goods were sold. Buildings painted in all kinds of colors gave joy to the whole place. Lan got to travel to a few islands for her missions before but she never really took the time to admire the landscapes and architectures of those places. She was always busy with killing and going back to Enies Lobby. Too focused, she lost sight of the group and ended up alone with Kotatsu. Lan didn’t really mind and kept on exploring the town further. By coincidence she walked by a library. It looked nothing like the one Min owned but the sight of the books made her heart beat faster. Without a second thought, Lan stepped inside and walked through the book shelves. A book then suddenly caught her eye. It was the exact same one her father bought from Min when she was a child. She picked it up and went through the pages. She then remembered how she used to dream while reading that book. She was woken up from her memories by Deuce’s voice. The man was at the library to purchase some new books for Mihar and himself. He noticed the book in her hands and asked about it. Lan excitedly presented the book and showed him all the pictures drawn in it. Deuce was surprised to see Lan being so excited and lively all of a sudden. He never expected her to be so passionate about something. Lan didn’t even realize that and kept on talking about the book. Deuce smiled and offered her to buy the book for her. Lan was confused and asked why he would do that. Deuce simply explained that she seemed to like it that's why he'd buy it for her. Plus, she didn’t have any money since she hadn’t been hunting any pirates since they’ve met. Lan wondered how he knew her love for the book and shyly accepted the gift. After getting her book, Deuce and Lan walked alongside on the streets. They got to chat friendly when a masked man dressed in white walks past Lan. He whispered something to her and she recognized his voice immediately. Lan kept on walking but quickly disappeared, leaving Deuce and Kotatsu alone.
Lan actually left them to go meet Evan in secret on a rooftop. Evan seemed happy to finally see Lan again, but the woman seemed uncomfortable. Evan was not really mad at her at first. He believed he needed to give her time to realize her mistake before she could come back to him. It’s been a year now and he has been waiting long enough. She spent more than 10 years inside walls and ever since she was a child she dreamt of travelling. He knew it because he has known her since she was 6. He knew her the best. Now that she had been able to “have fun”, she needed to go back to work. The “Pluton mission” was still going on and as part of the CP-9 she had the responsibility to complete the mission alongside the other CP9 agents. Lan listened quietly but appeared intimidated. Evan was speaking calmly but she could clearly see that he was mad. She couldn't fight back. 10 years of brainwashing and abuse made it impossible to go against Evan. But she had had a taste of freedom and happiness. And so, she couldn't willfully agree to go back. Evan sensed it and threatened to exterminate the Spade pirates. It would be quite difficult for the pirates to survive a Buster Call. After putting an ultimatum to Lan, Evan left saying he'd wait for her that night to go back to Enies Lobby. Just like that Evan disappeared leaving a trembling Lan.
Still weak from her encounter with Evan, Lan walked aimlessly in the town. She was woken up from her thoughts as she heard screams. She managed to recognize Ace’s voice and saw him running away from restaurants’ owners. Ace noticed her as well and grabbed her hand and they ended up running away together. They managed to escape and after running, Ace felt hungry again and invited Lan to go eat. Lan was confused and tried to stop him since he was not going to pay anyway. Ace sighed and told her that life is too short to worry about those things. He wants to live a life without any regrets and so he won’t deprive himself from a good meal just because he doesn’t have enough money. Lan kinda got the idea but it was still against the law. Ace just laughed and brought her with him anyway. Because it would be the last time she spent time with him, she was willing to let it pass and followed him. At the restaurant, Ace began to eat as soon as they got their plates while Lan just watched him. Ace noticed it and laughed. He made a remark and Lan realized that she was still waiting for the permission to eat. She justified it as a habit and began eating. Ace then told her she has weird habits before abruptly falling asleep on his plate. Lan is dumbfounded and thought that he had a weirder habit than her. She kept eating when she overheard a conversation from the table next to theirs. It was men complaining about the rise of pirates coming to the island in recent years, after Gold Roger's death. Even in his death, he managed to bother the whole world. Lan unintentionally listened to their conversation and was brought back to reality when Ace woke up and resumed on eating. He, then, suddenly asked her what she thought of Gold Roger. Lan frankly responded that to her pirates are criminals and a threat to innocent citizens. They should be imprisoned, so Gold Roger was not different to her. However, this is what her mindset was before meeting Ace and his crew. If it was possible for some pirates to be actually honest then maybe there’s a chance Gold Roger might have been a nice person, just like Ace. Lan’s last words left a weird taste in Ace’s mouth. “Like you”. Lan then asked him why he asked her this question. Ace dismissed it and kept on eating. Changing the conversation's subject, he noticed Lan’s bag and got curious about its content. Lan shyly told him about the book. Seeing Ace’s interest, she showed it to him and started talking about it with enthusiasm. Ace listened with attention and learnt about Lan’s love for drawing. And from that they started to talk about everything and without them knowing it, the restaurant was about to close. Unsurprisingly, Ace doesn’t have anything to pay and so they ran away instead of paying for the meal. It was morally wrong and Lan felt a little bit sorry for the owner but being with Ace was kinda fun. After being out of sight, Ace decided to go somewhere alone and let Lan go back to the ship. Lan naively agreed and left. Ace ran through the streets and finally found a stationery shop that was about to close. He managed to purchase a sketchbook and some pencils for Lan and went back proudly to the ship.
Night had fallen and everybody was asleep in the Piece of Spadille, except for Ace. He was planning on placing his gifts next to Lan's bed so she could wake up to it the next morning. But Lan was not in her bed. She was out on the deck. She had changed into her old clothes and was about to walk out of the ship. Ace saw her and called out her name. He asked her what she was doing. Lan couldn’t turn around and simply said she was leaving. Ace repeated his question but the woman kept on walking away. Ace ran after her and grabbed her wrist to prevent her from making another step. He insisted. He didn’t understand why she was leaving. Ace declared that she was part of his crew now and so she coudln't leave without the captain's consent. However Lan denied it. She had never agreed to become a crew member so there was no need for him to stop her or give her his consent. But Ace wouldn’t let go. Lan had no choice but to use force in order to free herself from his grip. Both started to fight against each other. The fight was tight and it seemed like it would last for a while. In a cunning manner, Lan managed to create a diversion and ran away, leaving Ace alone.
After her fight with Ace, Lan joined Evan who was patiently waiting for her. He welcomed her back and congratulated her on making the right decision.

Dismantling of the Pupa Orphanage

Ever since Lan left without any apparent reason, Ace had been obsessed in finding her back. The night she left, he looked for her for days in Lavender Harbor but she just vanished. Everytime they would arrive on a new island, the Spade pirates would actively look for the woman or ask for any information concerning her whereabouts. When Lan left, she left behind her clothes and book. Ace had dearly kept the book and the sketchbook he wanted to give her, convinced he’ll see her once again. His journey kept on going and he became more and more infamous as a pirate. Time had passed and after 2 years on the sea, Ace joined the Whitedbeard pirates and became its 2nd division commander.
Meanwhile, Lan had come back to the Cipher Pol. She had to face a punishment for leaving and destroying the animal reserve of the World Nobles but was eventually reintegrated in the CP9. She started to kill again. Half of the CP9 was at Water 7 while the other half had to take on missions. She kept on killing revolutionary army members day after day. In the end, this was what she was meant to be. A cold blooded assassin. It was foolish of her to think that she could do something else in her life. But it was the right thing to do. That way, Ace and his friends could be safe. They could be happy and freely sail on the seas. Evan, to prevent her from running again, kept on threatening to harm the pirates if she ever disobeyed again. Lan was too scared to let that happen. If she could save them by dirtying her hands then it was worth it. But because she still missed them, she read every article talking about the Spade pirates. Ace was doing fine and it made her happy. She found strength in it.

Ace kept on traveling and with his crew, he arrived by chance on Moonhwa island. There he met with Min and San for the first time, and so discovered that Lan's little brother was still alive. Believing that Lan had died since the pirates' attack that cost their parents' lives, San was extremely relieved to know that his older sister was actually alive. After befriending them, Ace promised the both of them to find Lan and bring her home, to their side. During the time he spent on Moonhwa island, Ace got to know more about Lan's chidlhood and dreams from Min and San. Their stories motivated him even more to find her back. On the day of his departure from Moonhwa island, Ace was given an eternal pose so that he could easily come back to Moonhwa island with Lan.

After his promise to San and Min, Ace and his crew happened to dock onto a new island : the Misir Kingdom. Upon arrival, the Spade pirates let themselves be captured by revolutionnaries who seemed to have been traumatized by a woman sent by the government. The pirates quickly learnt that the revolutionnaries were on the island in order to help the people's revolution against their king. However, their efforts were put to waste by a CP9 agent who came to eliminate them. In order to prevent the entirety of his army to be killed, the revolutionaries' commander and their right-hand man, willingfully surrendered in exchange of their men's life. Days had passed since these events, and the remaining revolutionnaries planned on restoring their communication lines in order to call for help from their headquarters. However, before they could successfully establish a communication, the CP9 agent actually came back in Misir Kingdom and landed an ambush on the revolutionaries. The attack killed numerous of them and outraged the Spade pirates decided to help the revolutionaries. During the commotion, the CP9 agent tried to escape. However, Ace noticed them and chased after them without any second thought. Meanwhile, Deuce, as a doctor, attended to the survivors. One of them warned him to be careful as Ace was going up against the "Assassin Doll". Deuce recognized that epithet and suddenly had a bad feeling about all of that.
Ace was still chasing after the assassin and managed to catch up to them. A fight between the two began. The agent seemed to be holding back and only dodged Ace’s attacks. But at some point, Ace managed to make the assassin’s mask fall. Ace got to see their face and recognized the face instantly. It was the face he had been wanting to see for 2 years now. He would recognize it anywhere. Lan was standing right in front of him and she was the one who murdered all those people. He asked her for some explanations. Lan remained silent at first before confessing that she was a CP9 agent and she was the one who stopped the revolution happening in the Misir Kingdom. Ace couldn't understand how she could coldly kill people. To him, she wasn't herself. As he was bombarding her with questions he was holding onto her cape's collar. However, Lan tried to break free from his grip and ended up making him trip. But his grip was too strong and so they ended up rolling on the floor. In an instant Ace managed to catch both of Lan’s wrists and pinned her down and finally told her that San was alive. In complete disbelief and confusion, Lan managed to free herself from Ace's grip and ran away from him once more. She managed to get on the marine ship she came with while Ace desperately chased after her, even immersing himself in the ocean. Ignoring the pirate's call, Lan ordered her men to change the course of the ship in direction of the Pupa Orphanage. On the other side of the island, Ace managed to get back on his ship with the rest of his crew and they decided to go and follow Lan’s ship thanks to a vivre card Ace put on Lan during their hurdle.

Holding onto Lan's vivre card, Ace was on his ship's deck looking at the horizon in hopes to see the marine ship Lan boarded on. After a while, Mihar, who was in the ship’s nest, finally saw a marine ship from afar. The pirate recognized it as the ship Lan boarded on. Ace’s blood only makes one turn and in an instant he boarded his Striker and dashed towards the marine ship. He easily managed to get on board. He furiously looked for Lan and asked her to come out. He had no problems wiping the entire crew. His crewmates joined him and after a moment the marine captain that was accompanying Lan admitted that he was told to leave the Pupa orphanage without Lan. Taking out his vivre card, Ace followed it in order to find Lan. However it led him to the end of the ship. The paper was slowly burning and moving forward. Lan’s life was in danger. Ace had no time to waste.
Riding the navy ship they took control of, the Spade pirates were approaching the orphanage. Before taking over the ship, Deuce was able to learn more about that place and Lan. Ace had calm down a little bit and was holding onto Lan’s burning vivre card. The ship was sailing at high speed. Suddenly, a denden mushi rang. It was located in what looked like Lan’s room. Skull picked it up. Spandam, the CP9 leader, was on the other end. Thinking that it was Lan on the other end, the man sarted scolding her, asking her why she hadn’t come back to Enies Lobby yet. He still hadn’t got any report on the Misir Kingdom. He hoped that she hadn’t spared some revolutionaries again just because she promised their commander. "The 2 years she spent away from the CP9 must have weakened her. There was no place for emotions and feelings. All she needed to do was to obey. When he tells her to eat, she eats. If he tells her to jump, she jumps. If he tells her to kill, she kills. If he tells her to die, she dies. That’s what she exists for, obeying." Sick of it, Ace grabbed the speaker and threatened Spandam to find him as soon as he saves Lan. He’ll make sure to make him regret his words. He then hung up on Spandam.

A moment before Ace attacked Lan's marine ship, the woman had actually laid foot in the Pupa Orphanage. Upon arriving, Lan asked for a meeting with Evan. Evan welcomed her and asked her the reason of her sudden visit. Both were served a cup of tea. Lan stared at the cup before speaking. 12 years ago, the first day she came to Pupa Orphanage, she was told that there were no survivors on Moonhwa Island anymore. Because she didn’t have a home to go back to anymore, the World Government had taken the responsibility to take care of her, just like hundreds of other children. She never questioned those statements. But now, everything felt wrong. The Moonhwa flower is a flower that only grows on Moonhwa Island and Lan’s family is the only one who knows how to grow it and dry it properly. It is a flower that gives a particularly sweet fragrance to the tea. And Lan would recognize the fragrance anywhere. So she wondered why Evan’s office was filled with that same fragrance. Evan listened calmly and bursted out in laughter. He was able to create one of the best assassin in the world but it seemed like he may have made a miscalculation. Taking out a remote, he mercilessly pushed the button down. Instantly, Lan fell on the ground, growling in pain. Evan just watched her struggling on the floor. He claimed to be deeply sad to go that far. Lan had been doing so well all these years. So well, that she managed to avoid this special punishment of his. She was so obedient, serious and talented he never had to use it on her. Even when she ran away 2 years ago, he held himself back to use it because he knew she would get a hold of herself again. After all, she was his biggest achievement. But he had had enough. Lan needed to be "repaired". Lan couldn’t hear him properly and ended up fainting from the unbearable pain.

Moments later, Lan woke up unable to move at all in Evan's secret laboratory, built under his office. She was simply lyon on the metal table but she was completely unable to move a single muscle. Evan approached her and caressed her head. He was happy to see her waking up. He got worried for a moment but he was sure she was strong enough to survive his punishment. His success wouldn’t break just because of a simple punishment. He had administered her a powerful drug that weakened muscles. It weakened them enough to let the respiratory muscles and the heart do their minimum work. Evan knew that after learning about the survival of her younger brother, there was no way for her to go back to being the kind, obedient doll again. He knew that letting attacks’ survivors alive was a bad idea. His initial plan for Pupa orphanage was to completely wipe out the orphans' hometown to make sure rebellions would not occur. But the government was too scared of the image they’d reflect. To Evan it didn’t make any difference and felt the government was hypocritical. However, as long as the orphans could witness some horror coming from pirates or criminals, it was still a big step into modeling their mindset. Lan listened to every word he said. She felt betrayed and humiliated. But all she could do was to stare blankly at the ceiling lights as warm tears silently rolled down her cheeks. Evan noticed it and dried her tears with his hand in an endearing manner. He didn’t understand why she was crying. Wasn’t it what she wanted ? He remembered clearly the day they met. He remembered just how much she complained about her mother that day. Wasn’t she happy to be able to leave her island now that her mother was not here anymore to tell her no ? Enraged by Evan’s arrogance, Lan gathered all of her remaining strength and managed to slightly turn her head towards him to meet his eyes. The man seemed surprised by this light burst of strength and assumed she might need a little bit more of paralyzing drug. He actually felt sad to see her looking at him in that way. She used to have so much respect and faith for him. He admitted that she had been his favorite doll all this time. The fact that Lan was able to withstand Evan's experiments and prove the government he was able to produce an efficient killing machine, drove the government to finance the Pupa Orphanage. And so he couldn’t throw her aside. He needed her to be operational again for him to keep on getting funds from the government. And so, he actually came up with new drugs that might act on the brain in order to biologically suppress emotions from the subject. Instead of spending years brainwashing kids, this could save a lot more time and resources for him. It can also prevent errors occuring. And so, he was about to inject Lan with more paralyzing drugs when he suddenly got called by an employee telling him a navy ship apparently docked into the orphanage and a marine captain wanted to meet with Evan. He tried to make excuses but the employee insisted as the marine wouldn’t leave until he got to see Evan. Annoyed, Evan reluctantly left the laboratory and Lan. As he left, Lan managed to slightly move one of her fingers.
Back in his office, Evan checked the CCTVs and recognized Ace on the screen. He grinned and left his office. On the deck, Evan welcomed the Spade pirates who tried to disguise themselves as marines. Evan apologized for making them wait and invited Deuce (disguised as the captain) and Ace (disguised as an ensign) upstairs. The rest of the crew remained behind. Evan led the 2 males into an empty room. He then wondered what the marines wanted from him since unscheduled appointments were pretty rare in his facility. He then stopped walking and boldly asked them if they were here for "24124". He apologized and corrected himself. He meant Lan. He then called out Ace personally. The young pirate was triggered and launched an attacked on Evan. A fight ensued but was abruptly stopped by a mysterious gas filling in the room. Ace and Deuce fell unconscious and were brought somewhere else. Men who came to pick up the pirates confirmed that the rest of the crew had been taken care of as well.
Evan finally returned to his office but he noticed the door was opened. He hurriedly entered and discovered the door to his laboratory opened as well. He ran down the stairs and realized that Lan was gone. Angered but keeping his calm, he ordered all of his employees to find Lan immediately.
Somewhere in the orphanage, a young woman was standing in front of the door of her room, listening to all the noises in the corridors. She turned around and looked at her bed. Lan was lying on it, still weak. The woman observed her and wondered what she got herself into.
Moments later, Lan finally woke up after dreaming of her past. In complete distress, she realized she was in another unknown room. The owner of the room, Apgar Irene, who was a doctor working recently in the oprhanage, tried to reassure Lan and explained to her how she found her in the corridor and brought her to her room so she could rest. Irene actually guessed that Lan was a former orphan from the orphanage from her tattoo, characteristic of all children coming from the Pupa orphanage. In embarrassment for forgetting about it, Lan slight brushed the area of her tattoo and discovered a bump under it. Her attention went back to Irene as the doctor started asking her question about the situation going on in the orphanage. Soldiers have been ordered to look for someone and Irene easily deduced they were looking for Lan. Still hesitant about wether she could trust Irene or not, Lan refused to answer at first and instead wanted to interrogate Irene about the Pupa orphanage. Eventually, both of them agreed on answering each other's questions. During their exchange, Lan learnt that Irene decided to work for the orphanage because she felt she could be of help to the orphans the government selflessly took care of. Moreover, it was a way for her to learn from one of the best medical scientists : Evan Frost. Irene, on the other hand, learnt that Lan got hurt by Evan and that abuse may be occurring in the orphanage she works in. Their conversation was cut off by a violent knock on the door. Irene hurriedly hid Lan in her closet and answered the door. A soldier was here to go through every room of the facility. Irene awkwardly let him in, avoiding raising any suspicion. The soldier looked everywhere and was about to look through the closet. Irene started to panic and tried to stop him by saying she was embarrassed because she didn’t want him to look into her underwears. The soldier ignored her and grabbed the door handle when suddenly he got a call. Reinforcements were needed to guard the main laboratory where the Spade pirates were held captive. Upon hearing the news, Lan didn’t even think twice. She jumped out of the closet and attacked the soldier. She knocked him unconscious and took his uniform. Irene just stood there in shock. She didn’t expect Lan to be this aggressive. After changing clothes, Lan thanked Irene and advised her to change job. She was about to leave when Irene stopped her. She wanted to go with her and sees for herself if the children of the orphanage were really in danger. Lan refused and left.

Back to the pirates’ side, Ace and his crew awakened and discovered they had been attached to a strange machine. A huge empty glass ball was hanging on the ceiling and tubes were coming out of it. The tubes were linked to catheters that were inserted in each of the pirates' veins. It was impossible to move as they were tightly tied to the machine. Evan was standing in front of them and was happy to see them waking up. Evan explained to them that before Lan met them she used to be his perfect doll but ever since, she became more and more defective. To the point where she was starting to think by herself. Because of Ace and his friends, his years of work were being destroyed and he couldn’t forgive them. That’s why he shall make use of their useless existence by experimenting on them. The Pupa orphanage was the place where Evan was turning human into perfect killing machines. Unlike Vegapunk who was obsessed with robots, Evan was more fascinated with the human body and its functioning. Moreover, humans had intelligence that could never be reproduced in a machine. And so, he had thought of a way to change the way a brain works in order to turn a person into absolutely obedient solider. But working on the brain was not enough. He needed to change his subjects's constitution in order to grant them the skills and resistance to fight against strong opponents. So, he had come up with new drugs regularly in order to do so. Children who manage to pass all his tests are soldiers worth working for the government, just like Lan. Recently, Evan came up with a new formula and wished to try it out. A child was brought into the room and laid down on a metal table behind Evan. Evan was kind and sweet to the child. Telling him that to improve his health and body he needed a little bit of medication. The little boy agreed willingly. He would do anything to become a strong man who could get rid of the evil in this world. Evan seemed proud of him and patted his head. Evan then motionned one of the doctors in the room to inject the product in the little boy. The pirates watched in horror the little boy convulsing and screaming in pain. He started to bleed and after a few minutes, his body stopped moving. The doctor checked the corpse and confirmed the death. Ace was revolted and yelled at Evan. The latter just justified himself by saying that progress needed sacrifices. Testing is an essential step in the making of drugs. And the main principle of good testing is reproducibility. That’s why the pirates will have to take part in the tests as well. He would like to stay and see the process but Evan was busy. He needed to work on and “repair” Lan as soon as possible so he needed to leave. He ordered the doctors in the room to take care of everything and report to him the results. Ace couldn’t let him go and screamed his lungs out. While he agitated himself, the glass ball above their head was slowly filling up. Evan was walking towards the door when suddenly it bursted out and Evan was blown away. Lan walked in the laboratory. She wanted Evan to release the pirates immediately. She reminded him that he had promised her he wouldn’t hurt them if she came back to the government. Evan mocked her and justified his actions by saying that they were the ones entering his facility without his permission so it was only normal to punish intruders. As he arrogantly explained himself he tried to reach his punishing remote. But Lan didn’t let him do it and managed to stop him. Both started to fight in the laboratory. Evan was dumbfounded and was upset about Lan's rebellion against him. Soon the fight became one-sided as Lan started to be overwhelmed by Evan's strength. Evan was able to dodge Lan’s attacks which were hitting the entire room. However, Evan later realized that Lan was actually aiming at the machine the pirates were attached to. She managed to break the glass ball making all the drug spill out. Furious at Lan’s behavior, Evan finally took out the remote and mercilessly pushed down the button. Lan fell instantly on the ground, struggling with the burning pain spreading through her entire body. Ace witnessed the whole scene and in rage freed himself. Flames were spreading everywhere and he attacked Evan, making him stop pushing down the button. Ace then put up a firewall to prevent him from approaching Lan. He ordered Deuce and the others to take Lan and run. Although she was still fazed by the pain, Lan refused and didn’t want Ace to fight Evan alone. She screamed at Deuce, wanting to be put down but he wouldn’t listen. The whole crew obeyed and they managed to escape the laboratory.
On the other side of the orphanage, Irene couldn’t help but leave her room after Lan left her. She wanted to know what really was going on with the Pupa orphanage. And so she sneaked in an archives room. The room was filled with records of all the children that attended the Pupa orphanage. She started to read through them and was horrified to discover that all of them died. Medical reports were attached to the files. All of them died after being injected with all sorts of drugs created by Evan. Drugs to increase stamina, strength, speed, pain tolerance were used and tested on the children. She also discovered the existence of the chip inside every child’s nape and its purpose. After going through several files, Irene discovered Lan’s. She read it and it turned out that Lan was actually the only child of the orphanage who had managed to survive all of the trials and “get out” of Pupa orphanage. She was sent to become a Cipher Pol agent and become an assassin for the government. No other child managed to go as far as Lan. And ever since Lan left, no other child has been able to survive like she did. And the reason why is that the newly created drugs became much more stronger and dangerous. Several children were also got rid of because of their “insolence”. It was mainly children who realized that they were being abused. Sick of it, Irene fell on the floor. She fancied that place so much. She thought that it was a place where orphans could call home. But it was hell for them. And they didn’t even realize it. They were fed with lies and drugs. They were locked inside walls and raised to become tools. She then heard a rampage going on outside. She peeked out and noticed Deuce, Lan and the Spade pirates running away and fighting the orphanage’s soldiers. She called out to them. Lan told Deuce that they could trust Irene and the group decided to split. One team had to fight back the enemies, another one had to go find a ship and prepare it to escape and Deuce with Lan would go with Irene, looking for a safe place to hide in the mean time. Lan remembered Evan’s secret laboratory and proposed to go hide there. Once inside it, Deuce told Lan they would need to wait until his comrades find a way to leave the island and he would take her there. Lan refused. They needed to go stop Ace. She couldn’t leave. This was her problem. She needed to solve it herself. But Deuce tried to persuade her that it was okay to rely on someone for help. She was not alone anymore. She might have not realize it but she had already become someone Ace deeply cares for. He had been looking for her, missing her for 2 years. Ace was the type of person who couldn’t let someone hurt the people he cared for. That was why he would make sure to beat Evan for all the pain he had inflicted on Lan. The woman felt touched but also upset that Ace might die because of her. Deuce added that Lan couldn’t fight against Evan in her state. Lan was weaker than usual and Evan had a way to neutralize her in an instant. However, Irene joined the conversation and revealed that she knew what the remote controlled. She told them about the chip and all of the records she read earlier. Horrified by the real purpose of the orphanage, Lan was in disbelief but now she could finally open her eyes and know what truly mattered for her. After a deep reflection, Lan desperately asked for Deuce and Irene to take the chip out for her. Irene refused at first as it would be too dangerous since the chip was actually linked to Lan’s nervous system. If they messed up, Lan could end up paralyzed or even die. Nonetheless, Lan insisted. She needed to go help Ace fighting against Evan. The Pupa orphanage also needed to be destroyed in order to prevent other victims to go through what Lan did. Moved by Lan’s courage and resolution, Irene eventually accepted her request.
Eventually, after getting her chip being taken out successfully by Irene and Deuce, Lan got to join Ace and Evan's fight. Evan called out her serial number in annoyance and confidently took out his remote and pushed the button but nothing happened. Determined, Lan declared with confidence that her name was Dao Lan, denying the serial number and the epithet that was given her all these years. She then confidently claimed that she was going to destroy Evan's orphanage and finally be free. Ace looked at her in awe and joined her, ready to fight by her side. Obviously upset at Lan's deviance, Evan was determined to fight this battle.
Meanwhile, Deuce had informed his friends of the change of plans. They needed to board into the navy ship they came in with and board all the orphans in it. The pirates who stayed on the Piece of Spadille were actually informed as well. They, in turn, called out for help from Whitebeard. Deuce and Irene with parts of the pirates were trying to evacuate all the children. However, the majority would not move a bit because they had been trained to wait for orders. The scene broke Irene’s heart. Not having much time, the pirates decided to take the children by force and escape.
The fight against Evan was growing intense. Working together, Ace and Lan managed to be equal to Evan. Both sides were taking damages. It was during this fight that Ace and Lan came up with a combined attack which mixed Ace's fire with the wind Lan created with her whip. Eventually towards the end of the fight, Lan decided to use the Rokuogan technique. It affected Evan greatly but took out a lot of energy out of Lan. Not used to that attack, Lan was greatly weakened by it. However, Evan was still standing. Resolved in protecting his facility and years of work, Evan lauched an attack on Lan. It was about to hit her whan Ace puts himself in between and takes the hit for her. Nonetheless, Ace was still standing and wished to put an end to the fight. At that moment, he saw the ship his comrades were using to quit the island. It was right under them. Out of the blue he kicked Lan making her fall out of the building but using her whip she managed to get a hold onto the walls. She tried her best to climb up but out of strength it took her too much time. Meanwhile Ace was getting ready to throw his best technique : Dai Enkai Entei. As he prepared the attack Evan was relentlessly attacking him but Ace wouldn’t fall. Eventually he threw the giant fireball at Evan. The man had nowhere to escape and took it. The attack finally knocked the scientist unconscious. Ace and Lan had won. Right at the end of the fight, Lan finally managed to reach the place where Ace was and called him out. Exhausted, Ace could barely stand on his feet. But he managed to turn around to face Lan. She was standing in front of him. He took a step, then two. He was only a few steps away. But he had no strength left. Lan watched him struggling, stubbornly trying to reach her. She was deeply moved and took a step towards the man. She hesitantly walked forwards before running to him. Ace was about to fall but Lan embraced him and they both fell on their knees. Before he fell unconscious, she cried and thanked him while holding him tightly in her arms.

Days had passed since the events at the Pupa orphanage. A buster call had been launched on the facility in order to destroy all evidence of the government's involvement in it. It was called by Akainu. The admiral had been an active supporter of Evan’s project. But the results were quite disappointing for him. In 15 years, Evan only managed to produce one soldier and that one soldier rebelled and escaped with pirates. Akainu had decided to put an end to this mess and get rid of Evan.
After escaping the island, Ace, Lan and the rest of the group gathered with the rest of the Spade pirates and the Whitebeard pirates. Whitebeard met Lan for the first time and welcomed her warmly on the ship. The different divisions of the Whitebeard's fleet were asked to help bringing the orphans back to their home. As for Irene, she was so disappointed in the government and Evan that she was unsure of what she wanted to do. Scared that she might end up in another horrific place such as the Pupa orphanage, she decided to stay on the Mobydick and be part of the medical team under Marco's supervision until she could have a clear idea of what she wants to do in the future. During all of that, Ace was still unconscious and resting. Lan actually woke up earlier than him and stayed by his side, waiting for him to wake up as well. Ace eventually woke up. Immediately after his recovery, he brought Lan with him on his Striker and headed towards Moonhwa island.
Once on the island, Lan took a stroll through the streets and she recalled all the fond memories she made there. Her steps led her to Min’s library. Lan took a look and she could feel the tears coming up. She took baby steps towards the shop and finally entered. Once inside, she could finally meet with San and Min again. Quickly, news of Lan's return spread all across Lan's hometown village. That day, Min closed her library earlier than usual. She and San wanted to catch up with Lan. They all decided to go up the mountain and the forest where Lan’s childhood house was. Ace was of course invited but he declined, wanting to let them be alone. The 2 siblings and the old woman, then, caught up after all those years apart. Lan was later brought to her parents’ tombstone. Finally being able to pay her respects to them, Lan couldn’t help but cry. In front of their tombstones and as a way to tell her story to her parents, Lan revealed to her littler brother what had happened to her in the Pupa orphanage and the Cipher Pol during all those years. She then told him the short adventure she lived with Ace, sharing her wish to keep on sailing with his crew. San listened to his sister with attention and knew all along that he couldn't keep her bound to Moonhwa island. He gave her his blessings for her journey.
On the other hand, Ace was spending time alone on a cliff nearby. The cliff reminded him of the place where he and his brothers used to dream of becoming free. Lan interrupted him in his thoughts and sat beside him. She revealed to him that it was the place she came to everyday and drew when she was a child. There, she would imagine herself sailing on a boat, landing on a new island everyday, drawing them and compiling all the drawings into a book. Ace looked at the horizon as well and told her that back at home, he had a cliff similar to that one where he used to dream of sailing as well. The day they learned of Sabo's death, he and Luffy promised to become the most free people in the world, for Sabo, on that cliff as well. Their conversation then shifted onto stories about Luffy. Lan listens to Ace's stories, intrigued by the rubber boy, wanting to meet him. Lan could feel the love Ace had for Luffy. It leaded her to praise Ace for his kindness and good nature. However Ace seemed ashamed by the sudden praise. He didn't thought of himself as a good person, because he was the son of a devil : Gol D. Roger. But Lan didn't understand how being the son of Gol D. Roger and being a bad person were linked to each other. In her case, her parents were simple farmers and merchants and yet she had become a cold blooded assassin. For her, the choices they make and the people they meet makes them what they are. That's why, for her, Ace was a good person. He was the person who saved her. He was someone she cares deeply for, so she wouldn’t forgive him if he talked bad about himself again. Ace laughed claiming that Lan was a weird person. He, then, told her the same speech, praising her good nature as well. They start to laugh together and keep on talking all evening, about their childhood memories and Ace’s adventures these past 2 years. After some time, Ace took out something from his backpack. It was Lan’s favorite book and a sketchbook. He finally got to give them to her. He admitted he wanted to give the sketchbook to her the night she left 2 years ago. Touched by the gesture, Lan gathered her courage and asked Ace to let her join him on his journey. She wanted to travel the world and make her dream come true. She wanted to do it with Ace by her side. Ace happily agreed and so, the next morning, Lan bid goodbye to her family and left her hometown to live her dream. After the Pupa orphanage incident, Lan officially became a pirate and wanted posters of her were now distributed all around the world.

Days with the Whitebeard Pirates

Lan was warmly welcomed on the Mobydick. She got to meet Marco, Thatch, Teach, Izo and many more. Whitebeard was particularly intrigued by the woman as he heard a lot about her from Ace before. She got integrated pretty quickly as most of the pirates were really friendly. Naturally, Lan was assigned to the 2nd division. Lan traveled with Ace and was able to fill in her sketchbook regularly. When she was back on the Mobydick, she would spend a lot of time with Irene who she grew extremely closed to. As time passed by, she and Ace also grew closer. He was the one she felt the most comfortable with. To the point where feelings started to develop between each other. Both were falling in love but wouldn’t confess at all. Lan had difficulty recognizing the feeling of falling in love and Ace felt unworthy of falling in love. Everybody on the ship knew about their feelings and were eager to see them finally dating. Whitebeard even ended up giving Lan advice on her feelings.

During her journey with Ace, Lan got to go to Wano Countrywith Ace and the Spade pirates. Along with the others, she let herself get captured by the villagers of Amigasa. She got to witness Ace’s kindness once again and kept falling deeper in love with the man. Lan would learn along Ace and from Ô-Tama kasa weaving (even though she was terrible at it). And after witnessing Lan’s agility and power, Ô-Tama took Lan as a model. She saw her as an "enchanting kunoichi" and wanted to become as strong as her so that she could come on Ace’s ship. Lan didn’t understand what the little girl meant but was okay with teaching her some moves. They both bonded and Lan became extremely attached and protective towards Ô-Tama. Ace witnessed it and fell deeper in love as well.
When Ace went to Kaido’s place to fight him, Lan was also part of it. While the rest of the crew brought the slaves back to their home, Lan stayed at Kaido’s place and watched Ace and Yamato fight each other. She knew that Ace somehow fought Yamato to help him. It was in Ace’s nature to fight for those who were slave to something. She kept on watching them and couldn’t help but draw them. After she was done, she had to stop them otherwise they would never stop. So she barged in between and put them both on the floor. That night, the 3 of them spent time drinking. Yamato was dreaming of the outside world and fancied the new pirates out in the grandline. Ace ended up bragging about Luffy again. Lan told Yamato that he was going to do it all night so instead he should look at the drawings she made of the outside world. Lan and Ace started to bicker to get Yamato’s attention. Yamato watched them and told them that they formed a good couple. They both turn red and suddenly got awkward. Yamato noticed the awkwardness and tried to change the subject. After leaving Yamato, Ace and Lan spent some time alone on a beach. While watching the starry sky of Wano, they both talk about the idea of trying to save Ô-Tama and Yamato from the hold of Kaido. At some point, their conversation led them to the subject of their relationship. Lan ended up confessing to the man first. Ace was taken aback by the sudden turn of events. Hwever, Ace’s face suddenly darkened. He thought that he didn’t deserve her love because of his bloodline. He was about to badmouth himself when Lan stopped him. She didn’t want to hear it. She was in completely in disagreement with his opinion on himself. Ace couldn't fight back and gave in. He gathered up his courage and kissed Lan for the first time that night.
After leaving Wano, Ace tried to convince Whitebeard to go and fight Kaido so that he could fulfill his promise to Yamato. Lan was on the side nodding to every word Ace spat out as a way to support her boyfriend. In the end, Whitebeard refused and beat up Ace to end the conversation.

Time had passed since Wano Country and Lan's and Ace’s relationship was getting stronger and stronger. Ace would be more protective towards Lan while the woman had become more expressive and caring towards Ace. They would often travel out of the Mobydick on their own and come back. At that time, Luffy had finally sailed on the sea on his own and Ace learned about it. Lan was finally able to put a face on Ace’s little brother. After one of their trips, they both discovered Thatch’s murder. Enraged, Ace decided to go after Teach and bring him back to the Mobydick so he could face a proper punishment. Although, Ace first agreed to let Lan join him in his hunt, he changed his mind as he felt it was his sole responsibility as Teach's commander. And so, he actually left the Mobydick without telling Lan. Lan quickly discovered it and chased after Ace on her own while also looking for information about Teach.

Arabasta Saga

Little Garden Arc

The Straw hats were sailing on the Grandline along with Vivi and Karoo, in direction of Little Garden.
After escaping a giant dolphin, they noticed a bark on the sea with someone on it. It seemed like they were unconscious. Without hesitating, Luffy stretched his arm out to the target and caught it. With his arm wrapped around the person, Luffy brought them to his side. Once on the ship, the pirates finally discovered that it was a woman. Completely unconscious and dehydrated, they decided to firstly put her in a room and attend to her care. The woman was actually Lan who had sail in search for Ace but because of her poor navigation skills, got lost on sea.
While Lan was unconscious, the young pirates soon arrived in Little Garden. There, they divided themselves into groups. Eventually, Nami and Usopp were left behind on the ship and were forced to look after it and also after Lan who they still didn’t know if she was an enemy or not. On their toes, they decided to keep an eye on the door leading to the rooms, hoping that Lan wouldn't wake up until one of their friends come back to the Merry. However, unfortunately for them, Lan woke up shortly after their friends' departure and came out of her room to meet them. After exchanging a few words with each other, the three of them were joined by the giant, Brogy, who was here to ask for some rum. Totally scared, Nami and Usopp played dead on the deck in hopes that Brogy would leave. But their plan was completely ruined by Lan who exposed them to the giant. Eventually, Brogy invited them to his camp to have some food and drinks. At Brogy’s camp, they were served dinosaur’s meat which Lan accepted gladly after getting permission from Brogy. On the other hand, Nami and Usopp were too scared to eat anything. After talking a little bit with the giant, the three pirates learnt about Brogy's and Dorry's rivalry and duels, when suddenly the island’s volcano exploded, signaling Brogy the start of a new duel against Dorry. Lan, Nami and Usopp watched the duel until Nami tried to urge Usopp to use this opportunity to escape from Brogy and Lan. But the man was too mesmerized by the duel. He wanted to become brave and proud like those giants. Lan misunderstood and thinks he wanted to become a giant making Nami laugh.
After the duel, Brogy came back to the 3 of them. Usopp shared his dream with him. Brogy then told them about the pride and the wish of all giants to have an honorable death. Those are concepts that Lan still didn't grasp well and so she asked him what he meant by honorable death. He kindly explained that to die without tarnishing one’s death is what he meant by honorable death. The island’s volcano then exploded once again and it was time for another duel. Despite his injuries, Broggy immediately got up to meet Dorry who had just been heavily injured after drinking a trapped barrel. After cheering Brogy on, Nami suggested Usopp that they find Luffy to find a way to get out of the island as soon as possible. Lan heard Luffy’s name and froze. She asked her if she was talking about Monkey D. Luffy and to make sure she even showed her the wanted poster of the young boy. Nami confirmed. Lan requested to meet him but Usopp and Nami started to suspect Lan of being a bounty hunter or part of Baroque Works. As Lan got distracted by a dinosaur flying by, they get the chance to run away from her. Lan noticed it too late and went into the forest to look for them. In the forest, she accidentally found what looked like Usopp. She approached the figure trying to befriend it but before she could continue, the form changed its shape and trapped her. With her hands and feets stuck in wax, Lan was unable to fight back and was brought to Mr. 3 alongside Nami, Vivi and Zoro. In a really calm manner, she introduced herself to Zoro and recognized Vivi as the princess of Arabasta. Lan, Zoro, Nami and Vivi ended up on a giant candle where they were bound to become candles themselves. Since she left her whip on the Going Merry, Lan couldn’t free herself at all and had to listen to Mr. 3 disrespecting Brogy’s beliefs. Annoyed, Zoro decided to cut his own leg to get free and fight. Lan seemed tempted by the idea and asked him to cut hers as well after he was done. Somehow Nami wasn’t so scared of Lan anymore and got comfortable enough to scold her and Zoro. Fortunately, Luffy, Usopp and Karoo arrived on time before more harm could be done to their legs. After doing some tricks, Luffy managed to destroy the main pole of the giant candle however the candle still stood and was functioning. Being able to get closer to the candle, Luffy and Lan got to introduce themselves to each other. But they didn’t have time to chit chat any longer as the process of becoming a candle was getting faster and Luffy kept getting bothered by M. 3. Lan couldn't move at all and was now stuck in a thinking pose. Nami asked her what was wrong with her pose. Lan responded that she wanted to do like Zoro and was thinking of what kind of pose could be cool for her as a wax statue but ended up stuck in that pose. Nami was totally dumbfounded and was sure that Lan was not someone that dangerous. Meanwhile, Luffy was trying hard to get rid of Mr. 3 and succeeded in it. Before getting trapped in Miss Goldenweek paint traps. While Zoro, Nami and Vivi were losing patience, Lan couldn’t help but notice that Luffy was exactly like Ace described him to her.
After a few minutes, Lan and the others completely turned into candles. Usopp saw it and decided to save Luffy from his hypnosis. Usopp also found out the way to free them from their candle state. After a little bit of teamwork, Luffy, Usopp and Karoo succeeded in putting the giant candle on fire. Annoyed, Miss Valentine tried to kill Usopp but Nami and Vivi managed to save him by attacking her. Angered, she planned on attacking them as well but suddenly Lan appeared in front of her and kicked her in the guts, leaving her unconscious. Zoro got out of the fire as well and defeated Mr. 5. On the other hand, Luffy managed to beat Mr. 3 and the fight was finally over.
After the fight, Brogy was mourning his friend’s "death". But luckily Dorry survived and reconciled with Brogy. Lan felt relieved just like the others. Vivi blamed herself for putting the giants and the Strawhats in trouble. But no one blamed her at all, Nami even scolded her about it. Lan watched the scene with fondness and felt like seeing the Spade pirates. She praised them and Vivi thanked Lan for her help. The others took this opportunity to finally ask Lan about herself. Lan told them that she was a pirate who was looking for her captain. She then explained them the reason why she was looking for him without giving any details and names. She then thanked them properly for saving her from starvation and dehydration and asked Luffy if she could travel with them temporarily while she looked for her captain. Luffy easily accepted as she seemed like a nice person to him. After Lan was accepted on the Merry, Sanji arrived and finally meets Lan as well. The cook was extremely relieved to see her awakened and started to swirl around her, promising to make a good lunch for her awakening. After calming down, Sanji showed the rest of the crew the eternal Logpose he had found, allowing them to leave Little Garden immediately for Arabasta.
On their way out, Brogy and Dorry decided to help the pirates leave the island by killing the giant golden fish outside of Little Garden. Lan was totally impressed by the scene that day that she immortalized it in her sketchbook.

Drum Island Arc

Luffy was eating snacks while looking at Lan drawing in her sketchbook, when suddenly Vivi called them out. Nami was severely sick and needed medical attention. Alngside Vivi, Lan attended to the navigator's care and used some of the medical knowledge she learnt from Irene to help Nami but the care she could gave were extremely limited and it became obvious that Luffy's ship needed a doctor on board. And so, the crew made the decision to find an island nearby as quick as possible and hire a doctor there. However, Nami didn’t want to change their course. They needed to reach Arabasta as quickly as possible as the rebellion was getting worse in the country. But no one was convinced that it was the right solution. In the end, Vivi decided to take a detour to find a doctor for Nami even though it meant arriving later to her kingdom.
On their way to find an island, the Merry ran into Wapol’s crew. They got ambushed by the King's soliders. Hearing the ruckus on the deck, Lan accompanied Sanji to check out the situation where they both discovered the ambush. Wapol was wishing to go back to Drum island and asked for an eternal Logpose from the Strawhats. They didn’t have any to give him so the king decided to eat a part of their ship in exchange. Angry, Luffy fought back and it was the cue for the rest of the crew to get rid of Wapol’s soldiers. Lan took it as a permission to fight and didn’t hesitate to knock some soldiers down. The soldiers were easily wiped out and Luffy got rid of Wapol.
The next night, Lan, along with the others, slept in Nami’s cabin to watch over her. Nami woke up in the night and discovered her friends at her bedside. Lan who had awakened as well, praised her friends for watching over Nami so dearly. She then offered Nami a cup of water. Nami thanked her for the water and the care. Lan modestly dismissed her, saying she was not that nice. Nami chuckled and said that it was exactly what nice people say.
The next morning, Lan, Luffy and Zoro were at Nami’s bedside. They suddenly heard that there was an island in sight. Overly excited Luffy tries to resist the urge to leave the room. Lan was also feeling excited to go and see it. Zoro noticed it and told Luffy he could go outside. Luffy then took Lan with him and got on the deck to discover the island. However, upon docking onto the island, the ship was stopped by the island’s inhabitants. They wouldn’t allow any pirates to go in further. Vivi, and Luffy ended up begging for them to call a doctor over so they could see Nami. The inhabitants eventually agreed to let them into the island and led the pirates into town. On their way to town, they learnt that the island actually had only one doctor. Her name was Kureha and she lived up in the mountains from which she came down from time to time. Nami couldn't wait for her so Luffy decided to take her himself to Kureha. Sanji accompanied him while Lan, Vivi and Usopp stayed behind with Dalton. While waiting outside, Dalton told them about the assault their island was the victim of. Drum island was in fact attacked by Blackbeard and his crew. Lan recognized his name and her eyes darkened. Dalton continued and told the pirates that at that time their king, Wapol, ran away from Blackbeard and abandoned the country. The 3 of them recognized Wapol’s name and remembered meeting him on their way here. Vivi was completley revolted by Wapol's behaviour as a king. As for Lan, she listened carefully to the story but seemed more preoccupied by Blackbeard. She took out her sketchbook and showed Dalton a sketch she had done of Teach. She asked him if Blackbeard ressembled the man she drew. Dalton confirmed that it was the man who attacked them a few months ago. Usopp and Vivi were getting curious. And so, Lan explained he was the man her captain and she was after. She then takes out another sketch. It was a protrait of Ace this time and she asked Dalton if he ever came to the island recently. Dalton hadn’t personally seen him but maybe another inhabitant did. Their conversation got interrupted by a woman who informed Dalton that she had seen Dr. Kureha in Cocoa Weed. Upon hearing the news, the 4 of them hurried and rode to the village. They unfortunately arrived too late. The doctor had already left the village. While they ask the villagers about her whereabouts, Lan took this opportunity to also ask people if they’ve seen Ace passing by. A bar drinker revealed he had seen him and that he was heading towards Arabasta next. Shortly after learning this precious piece of information, a panicked man came in the bar and alerted Dalton that Wapol had come back and that he was seen in Bighorn. Without wasting any minute, Dalton left for the village to confront Wapol. Lan, Vivi and Usopp were left alone and decided to go to Gyasta on their own, the village where Kureha might be. However, they had problems reading the map and got lost in the snow. And as if it wasn't enough, an avalanche suddenly hit them. They thankfully survived and after walking in the snow for a while they encountered a half naked Zoro. Zoro explained how he ended in the forest half naked and asked for some clothes to warm him. Lan kindly handed him her scarf and they resumed their trip to Bighorn to find Dalton and ask for his help.
After walking for a moment the group arrived back at Bighorn. They learnt that they were soldiers preventing the villagers from helping Dalton who got buried in the snow after the avalanche. Zoro attacked one of them to steal his clothes. He then gave Lan her scarf back. Without a care in the world, they didn’t pay attention to the angry soldiers around them and defeated them, letting the villagers to look for Dalton. Out of habit, Lan was about to finish off one of the soldiers but was stopped by Vivi. Lan loosened her grip and apologizes to the pirates for worrying them, telling them it was an old habit of hers. Usopp was frozen and wondered how she got such a habit from. Zoro seemed quite intrigued and noticed Lan’s distraught but kept silent. Shortly after, Dalton was saved and taken care of. But as soon as he woke up he planned on going after Wapol to prevent him from going back to the throne. Moved by his motivation, Usopp proposed to take him up to the castle on his back. But he was not strong enough to do it so Zoro did it instead. Lan and Vivi watched them and Lan told Vivi that the Strawhats were all really genuinely good people. Vivi agreed. Both women then followed but were stopped by the villagers who told them they could actually use a cable car to get to the castle. Everybody hopped on it. Inside, Dalton expressed his will to everyone to take down Wapol even if he had to sacrifice himself for it. He warned everyone he was going to explode himself and take down Wapol with him. Lan snapped at the statement and took the dynamite away from the man. Dalton got angry and wanted them back. Lan couldn’t give them back to him. She destroyed them on the spot and scolded Dalton. The people in the cab agree with the woman, begging Dalton to not kill himself. Lan approached Dalton and handed out her hand to him. She offered her help in taking down Wapol and his men with him, so he can’t give up yet. Vivi backed up Lan, as well as Usopp and Zoro. With their spirits high up, they all arrived on the mountaintop. Zoro and Usopp went out first to get a look but they suddenly got attacked by Luffy who thought that they were Wapol’s men. Soon Vivi and Lan got out and got some news about Nami and Sanji. They learnt that Wapol had already been taken care of and was not on the island anymore. Luffy also introduced Chopper as his new crewmate and tried to convince him to come. Meanwhile, Vivi and Lan reunited with Nami and stayed at her bedside. Nami succeeded in negotiating with Dr. Kureha to get out of the island earlier. The girls got out of the castle and witnessed Chopper being recruited by Luffy. Lan was moved by that moment as seeing Chopper blaming himself from being “a monster” reminded her of herself. Excited to announce his decision to his mentor, Chopper hurried inside while his friends waited for him. As the strawhats waited outside for Chopper, The Strawhats agreed on letting Lan stayed a little longer on their ship as she needed to go to Arabasta as well. Suddenly as they were talking, Chopper came out with a sleigh attached to him. He urged everyone to hop in it and escaped from Kureha. On their way to the ship, canons could be heard from behind and so they stopped. There, they witnessed cherry blossoms in the middle of winter which was the way for Dr. Kureha to say goodbye to Chopper. On the ship, the crew was celebrating Chopper’s arrival and got to know him better.

Arabasta Arc

The Merry was sailing without any major problem in the direction of Arabasta, until the crew ran out of food. To pass time, Lan was drawing Chopper who got extremely shy about it. Both bonded as Lan found him to be really cute. But, suddenly the ship ended up being surrounded by steams coming out from the sea. The ship went through the steam but as they got out of it, Luffy and Usopp accidentally caught Mr. 2 on their lines. Bonclay fell in the water but was quickly rescued. The pirates got to know him a little better and discovered his ability as a demon fruit user. The man then put on a show to showcase his ability. He suddenly hit Luffy in the face as part of the showcase, prompting Lan and the others to immediately get on their guards. Lan was about to attack Bonclay when she noticed his new face. It was Luffy’s. Bonclay introduced them the Mane Mane fruit and went on by touching Lan’s, Nami’s, Usopp’s, Chopper’s and Zoro’s face. As he was in Lan’s appearance, he showed them that his power even applied to bodies by showing the boys Lan's naked body. Embarrassed, Lan hit Bonclay out of anger and glared in embarrassment at the boys. Bonclay kept on showing off to the boys, while Lan was sulking in the corner, saying she didn’t like him. Soon after Bonclay's ship came back to bring him back. The okama bid farewell to the pirates and revealed hismelf as Mr. 2. Realizing that they let the enemy see and use their faces, Zoro came up with the idea to put an X mark on their right forearm and hide it behind a bandage. It was the sign that will help them know if they were Bonclay or not. Lan hesitated to join them as she might not even be able to take part in the mission. But Luffy insisted because she was their friend now.
After a while, they finally arrived at destination and got to step on land. The first thing Luffy did was to get to a restaurant and so he dashed alone towards a nearby town but got lost in the desert. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew settled down on land. As Sanji and Chopper were the only ones the Baroque Works wouldn’t recognize, they were the ones going out to buy local outfits and food. Lan ended up wearing a dancer’s outfit alongside Nami and Vivi. After getting changed, she proceeded to go look for Ace in town. She ended up alone asking for Ace’s whereabouts. She was about to head to one of the town’s restaurants when she heard Luffy's voice. The captain had come back from the desert and was now running towards a restaurant. In a hurry, he stretched out his arms, trapping Lan in between by accident. And in a split second Luffy was catapulted towards her. As a reflex, Lan hung onto Luffy’s neck and was catapulted with him into a restaurant. Both ended up hitting Smoker and Ace, who were inside, and made them fly through the walls. Luffy was thrilled to be at a restaurant and finally noticed that Lan was with him. He assumed she wanted to eat as well so he invited her to sit with him. Lan wanted to argue back but it was actually true that she was starving so she sat down and asked for some food from the owner. They were both enjoying their meal when suddenly Smoker appeared after pushing down Ace, who cannot call out for Luffy (Ace didn’t see Lan as she was under the counter to pick her napkin). Luffy recognized Smoker and ran away from him with Lan under his arm. Luffy tried his best to escape but he was about to get caught when Ace intervened and confronted Smoker. Ace discovered Lan under Luffy’s arm and was shocked to see her. As he could easily guess the reason why whe was in Arabasta, Ace urged Luffy and his friends to ran away with Lan while he would take care of Smoker. Of course, Lan wanted to stay behind and help Ace but Luffy obeyed and didn’t let go. Once on the ship, Luffy revealed to his crew that Ace was his brother and told them a little bit about him. Lan then confessed that Ace was actually her captain and he was the man she was looking for. As they all talk about Ace, the man finally joined them on the ship. He rapidly noticed Lan and apologized to her for leaving her without any notice even though they agreed on looking for Teach together. Lan listened with a grave expression before forgiving him. It was at this occasion that Ace and Lan revealed the Strawhats that they were in a relationship and that they were both part of the Whitebeard pirates. Ace thanked his little brother for taking care of Lan and gave him a vivre card. After doing all he had to do, he went back to his Striker and prepared to leave. As he does, Lan stayed on the Merry to properly bid farewell to the Strawhats. Luffy was pouting at the idea to let Lan go but couldn't hold her back. Lan proudly put out her marked arm as a goodbye and wished to see them all again. The Strawhats and Vivi pulled out their marked arms as well and wished her goodbye. Lan then hopped onto the Striker and left with Ace after getting rid of some Baroque Works' ships.

Summit War Saga

Impel Down Arc

Coincidentally Lan arrived in Impel Down a day before Luffy infiltrated the prison. On her way to meet with Akainu, who wanted to make a deal with her so she could take part in the Summit war on the government's side, Lan was able to escape from the guards' watch thanks to all the ruckus that Luffy and Buggy were doing. She managed to break her handcuffs and could roam freely inside the prison. Her steps led her to meet with Luffy once again and together they decided to work together to save Ace.
On their way to level 6, Luffy and Lan were able to meet Mr. 3 and Bonclay again. Bonclay decided to join the both of them in order to get to level 5 and meet with Ivankov, his idol. Lan recognized the name and admitted to Luffy and Bonclay that she was the one who actually captured them and sent him to Impel Down when she was working for the government. Even though some tension was present between Lan and Bonclay, the 3 of them, alongside with Buggy and Mr. 3, made their way into level 4 of Impel Down. However, on that level, the director of the prison, Magellan, was there to personally stop them. Lan and Luffy both tried to fight against him, while Bonclay ran away in fear, but failed to beat him because of his powerful poison. Lan was less touched by the poison than Luffy and had developed a minor resistance to poison so she was still able to remain conscious. But she was too weak to resist and so they were both brought to level 5 where they were imprisoned. Both behind bars, Lan used all her remaining powers to try to break the cell bars but she couldn’t even scratch them. She was desperately hitting on the bars despite the cold, hurting herself even more. But suddenly, Bonclay reappeared before her and had the key to their cell. He was here to save them and apologize for running away. As he carried Lan and Luffy, he also tried to look for Ivankov who he believe could help his 2 friends. While looking for them, a pack of wolves attacked Bonclay. He tried his best to push them away but was quickly overwhelmed by their number. Lan gathered all her remaining strength and tried to help Bonclay but she got overwhelmed as well. In the end, Luffy unconsciously used his Haoshoku Haki to get rid of all the wolves. The 3 of them collapsed on the snow, helpless, before getting discovered by Ivankov themselve. Lan begged for his help, throwing away her pride. Knowing well, that Ivankov may had resentment against her, she wished for them to at least save Luffy and Bonclay. Lan kept on begging until she had no more strength and fell unconscious. Moved by her dedication, Ivankov decided to save the 3 of them.
Bonclay and Lan were the firts ones to wake up and recover. While Bonclay could freely walk around Ivankov's hiding spot, Lan was confined in a cell. Meanwhile, Luffy was under a special medical treatment to help him recover. Alone in her cell, Lan desperately prayed for Luffy's recovery as it was the only thing she could do. Ivankov was planning on punishing Lan for killing numerous of their men but they didn't know how so they imprisoned her in the mean time. Lan understand fully her faults and was ready to accept her judgement. Hours passed and Luffy finally regained counsciousness and after a good meal, was all set up to go save his brother. As he gave no importance in Lan's past as a CP9 agent, Luffy was determined to have Lan by his side to save Ace together. Eventually, Ivankov dropped off the idea of getting revenge on Lan and let her out of her cell. It was at that moment, that Lan, Ivankov and Bonclay discovered Luffy's dad true identity. Knowing that he was Dragon’s son, Ivankov decides to help Luffy in rescuing Ace. With the help of Ivankov and Inazuma, Luffy and Lan arrived on level 6 but it was too late. Ace had already been taken to Marineford. Lan and Luffy were still not discouraged and decided to head for Marineford and save Ace there.
For their way out of Impel Down, Luffy and Lan had recruited Jinbe and Crocodile on their team while Ivankov gathered all the members of his okama land to join the battle and ordered some of them to get Lan's whip back for her. On their way up, numerous of prisoners were freed from their cells and got to join Luffy and his team. However, they unexpectedly ran into Blackbeard on level 5 who was there to recruit new crew mates. Wanting to beat him up at first, Luffy was stopped by Jinbe who reminded him that they didn't have the time to fight Teach as they needed to hurry to Ace's side. Lan wanted to fight Blackbeard as much as Luffy did but restrained herself and backed up Jinbe to convince Luffy to let Blackbeard get away. Luffy diligently listened to them and resumed his acension of the prison. After much troubles and mainly thanks to Jinbe, Luffy and the rest of the prisoners were able to steal a navy ship and escape Impel Down. During their great escape, Lan was seen fighting against the numerous guards of the prison, stealing Sadi's whip to use it and helping the group escape Magellan by performing the Rokuogan after retrieving her personal whip.
Once on the ship, they still needed to open the Gates of Justice. Bonclay volunteered to stay behind to open them and by doing so sacrificed himself for Luffy and Lan. Learning about that plan too late, Lan and Luffy bid their farewell to Bonclay in tears.

Marineford Arc

Alongside with Luffy, Lan arrived on the battlefield from the sky, after falling off the navy ship they stole back at Impel Down. Upon their arrival, Lan quickly exchanged words with Whitebeard and informed him about the modification of the time of the execution. After doing so, Lan quickly joined the harsh battle by Luffy's side. Lan fought against various enemies while trying to get closer to Ace. She eventually reached the young man's side with Luffy and both were able to free Ace.
As the 3 of them were escaping the battlefield, Ace couldn't let Akainu badmouth Whitebeard and so let his emotions guide his actions. This led to his death as he took a hit from Akainu while protecting Luffy and Lan who momentarily got distracted. After confessing his love for all the people who came to save him, Ace died in Lan's and Luffy's arms. Totally in shock Luffy blacked out while Lan was unable to do anything and became paralyzed from the shock. While being carried by Jinbe, Lan had to also witness Whitebeard's death without doing anything for him. She was soon woken up from her trance by the attack of Akainu on Jinbe. Totally drowned in madness and anger, Lan broke out into a rampage against the admiral. Unable to think straight, Lan was completely careless, not dodging attacks coming at her and suffered a great amount of damage and injuries. But the angrier she got, the stronger she was as well. And so, she was able to use the Busoshoku haki for the first time and enabling her to inflict an injury on the admiral. However, Lan soon reached her physical limit. The injuries she received were taking a toll on her body and she could hardly stand on her feet with her eyes opened. But it wasn't enough for her. She wanted to take revenge but Marco and the rest of the Whitebeard pirates came in time to stop her and took her to Trafalgar Law's submarine. Lan managed to get on the yellow submarine right on time and was immediately medically attended to.

Post War Arc

The war was soon finished after Luffy and Lan's escape. Law and his crew got to hide in Amazon Lily where they could give the proper care for Lan, Luffy and Jinbe for two weeks. Jinbe and Luffy were the first ones to wake up. After accepting Ace's death and making a resolve to himself to find his comrades back, Luffy decided to stay on Rusakaina with Rayleigh to train and become stronger. Still in a coma, Lan showed no sign of waking up. Law was worried that Lan had no more will left to live and wake up but Luffy was sure of the contrary and made sure to tell her that he would be waiting for her to join him in his adventures. Since the Kuja tribe didn't have the proper devices necessary to Lan's survival and because Law didn't intend on staying in one place for too long, it was agreed to let Lan in Law's submarine until she recovered. In hopes to see her again and bring her into his crew, Luffy gave Lan a part of his vivre card.

Days after leaving the territory of Amazon Lily, Lan finally woke from her deep slumber. Fearing that she might throw a tantrum just like Luffy did, Law has actually administered her a tranquilizer to prevent her from moving and aggraving her injuries. Law took this opportunity to introduce himself and tell her about the aftermath of the Summit war. Obliged to listen to him Lan felt extremely frustrated and was in complete denial. She wished that everything that happened was just a horrible nightmare but the pain she felt in her body and in her heart were evidence that she couldn't deny. However, after accepting the fact that Ace was no more part of her world, Lan didn't feel the will to live and refused for days to get treated. Upset as a doctor, Law took upon his hand to give her purpose, telling her that if she let herself die it would be the government and Blackbeard's win. Law understood perfectly the feeling of weakness she was feeling at the moment and advised her to live and take her revenge just like he is intending to do. Law's words made Lan think a lot and she realized just how much she wanted to take revenge for Ace and Whitebeard. Afterwards, Lan finally let herself being treated and was able to recover safely under Law's care.
During her trip with the Heart pirates, Lan befriended the crew members, especially Bepo. Lan's stay on Law's submarine was cut short as Marco had come to take her back to the Whitebeards. After coming back to the Whitebeards, she took part in the Payback War a year later alongside her crewmates but faced another loss against the Blackbeards. After the crew's disbandment, Lan traveled on her own, on a whim, to go after the Blackbeards, obsessed with her idea of revenge. However, with her poor navigation skills, all she achieved was to get lost on the seas. Lan felt terribly upset at her weak self. She hated that feeling and was determined to become stronger. Luckily, she was fished out by Zunesha who happened to be passing by, allowing her to get into Zô.

During the Timeskip

Training

Lan spent a year training in Zô alongside the Minks. Her arrival on the elephant was pretty controversial at first but she was quickly taken under Nekomamushi's wings. It was a way for the Minks' leader to keep an eye on the woman and so, reassuring the people. Although, the minks were very wary of her presence at first, Lan soon gain their trust and was able to fully integrate herself in the minks' culture.
Her training there was essentially supervised by Pedro before she switched to Nekomamushi at night and Inuarashi during the day. Through her training, she was able to develop her own version of the Electro technique that was originally specific to the Mink tribe. She also learnt to control and master her Busoshoku Haki and Kenbunshoku Haki from the 2 leaders.
Amongst the minks, Lan was the closest to Pedro, Wanda and Carrot. Carrot quickly became her training pal and was like a little sister to her. Pedro was her mentor and an older brother figure. As for Wanda, she was someone she could always counted on for help and talk. Living a peaceful life on Zô helped Lan in finding a little bit of peace in her heart as well. She was able to reconnect with drawing and realized that even though the anger she had against Blackbeard or Akainu was still there, working towards her dream and living a life of no regrets would make Ace and Whitebeard a lot happier.
As Zô was a moving island and was not drawn on any map, Lan was able to stay hidden on the island for a whole year without worrying about being captured by the government. She eventually, decided to leave the giant elephant to go to Dressrosa in order to retrieve Ace's demon fruit, preventing it from being eaten by unworthy people.

Dressrosa Saga

After learning about the Corrida Colosseum tournament that was going to happen in Dressrosa and the fact that the prize for the winner was the Mera Mera fruit, Lan decided to leave Zô and head to the said tournament. Since she didn't have any navigation skill, it was actually Pedro and Wanda who helped her go to Doflamingo's kingdom. On their way there, Lan stopped by the island were Ace and Whitebeard were buried in, nearby Sphinx. After paying her respect to both of them and as she left the tombstone, Lan could feel a strong wind pushing her forward, in direction of the sea. Lan felt like it was Ace telling her to go and purchase her dreams. Finally being able to have closure on their death, she shared her resolves and bid her final farewell to them before resuming her journey to Dressrosa.

Punk Hazard Arc

Shortly after the events of Punk Hazard, news of Luffy and Law's alliance traveled all around the world and finally reached Lan who just arrived in Dressrosa. The news amusingly surprised her, as she found Luffy as unpredictable as ever. As she read, the newspaper, she couldn't help but wondering if Doflamingo's abdiction from the Seven Warlords had anything to do with their alliance. Nonetheless, she was excited to see Luffy and his friends again.

Dressrosa Arc

While waiting for the Corrida Colosseum tournament to begin, Lan spent most of her time strolling the streets and drawing. Her visit became quickly known to the marines and Lan ended up being targeted. While trying to outwit them during one of their search, Lan faked being the girlfriend of a complete stranger and so blending in the crowd. The stranger happened to be oone of Doflamingo's executive, Juan. The man completely misunderstood the situation and strongly believed that he and Lan were in a relationship. Obsessed by her, he would, from that day, stalk her.
On the day of the tournament, Lan registered herself under the name "Cay", which was her mother's. The number associated with it was "0101". In order to blend in with the other gladiators of the Corrida Colosseum, Lan changed clothes and put on a mask to hide her identity. She was assigned to block D alongside Rebecca and Cavendish.
Shortly after her arrival in the Corrida Colosseum, Lan started to be picked on by one the gladiators, Spartan, who was belittling her as a woman. As she completley ignored him, the man grew angrier and noticed Luffy who just got in. He decided to take out his anger on the young boy and attacked him. Luffy's retaliation caught everyone by surprise and Lan's attention. However, she wasn't able to recognize him under his poor desguise. Still thankful that he got rid of the annoying gladiator, Lan backed up the Chinjao Family in Luffy's defense. She thanked him for knocking out Spartan but still warned him to be more careful of the Colosseum's rules. Feeling a connection towards "Lucy", Lan guided him to the changing room where he could put on some accessories and find weapons. There, they met Cavendish and Rebecca and learnt a little bit more about the Colosseum's history.
Somehow, Lan, Luffy and Cavendish stayed together to watch the first rounds of the Battle Royale and as they were watching the block B one's, Lan and Cavendish finally discovered that "Lucy" was in fact Luffy. A huge misunderstanding and fight ensued as Luffy believed Lan to be after him just like Cavendish and Chinjao. Luffy managed to escape through a window, to Lan's sorrow. After the incident, Lan looked for Luffy but found into Rebecca who was talking to a soldier toy through a window. Seeing the teenager crying made Lan's heart sting. In an empathic manner, she approached her and invited her to go and watch the block C's round.
After Luffy's round, Lan tried to approach and talk to him but because of Cavendish and Chinjao she wasn't able to reveal herself to him and lost sight of the pirate. She quickly found him as he was about to get attacked by Rebecca. She easily disarmed Rebecca, offering Luffy the opportunity to neutralize her. Walking towards them, Lan finally got to talk to Luffy but the pirate still believed she was after his life as well and insisted in his name being "Lucy". Confused about his identity, Lan started to bicker with Luffy while Rebecca was waiting for a punishment from Luffy. Putting aside their quarrel, Lan and Luffy learnt more about the reality of the Colosseum and the relationship between Rebecca and the soldier toy. Missing the opportunity to reveal her identity to Luffy again, Lan and Rebecca headed out to the arena for the block D's round. While Rebecca was determined to win it, Lan was feeling conflicted about wether to take it seriously or let Rebecca win. On their way to the arena, Rebecca continued to share her goal and asked Lan's a reason for wanting the Mera Mera fruit. Lan hesitated for a second before answering that she wanted it because she liked fire. Their conversation got interrupted as they heard loud jeers directed towards Rebecca. Totally outraged by the public's behaviour, Lan clapped violently her whip on the ground to silence the public. Her action worked but the jeers quickly came back and were now directed at her. Touched by Lan's gesture, Rebecca tried to calm her down and minimized the situation, upsetting Lan even more. Eventually, the public's attention was directed towards Cavendish who made his entrance in a chivalrous manner and took the girls' defense. After thanking him, the round started. Not having any trouble knocking down her opponents, Lan quickly gained the public's favor. However, at some point, Cavendish fell asleep and went on a rampage, beating all the participants on the arena, except for Lan. The woman was able to stand up against the swordsman but their altercation came to an end as Cavendish fell back asleep. Unfortunately, during their fight, Lan's mask fell of and her face was then revealed to the public, except for Luffy who had to leave the Colosseum to find Doflamingo and save Law. As the sole participant standing up, Lan was about to be proclaimed the winner of the round but Rebecca was able to get up in time. Conflicted, Lan had to fight against the young girl. Lan was obviously stronger and could easily eliminate her but she chose to lose on purpose by stepping out of the arena.
Once out of the arena, Rebecca tried to find out why Lan lost on purpose for her. Lan simply explained that she originally wanted the Mera Mera fruit to prevent someone with bad intents to eat it. But if Rebecca was the one to get it then Lan didn't mind it. In the middle of their conversation, Bartolomeo, accompanied by Sabo who had disguised as "Lucy", called out for Lan. Totally mesmerized by her presence, the young pirate couldn't help but become a fanboy, totally amazed by her existence and friendshipp with Luffy. Lan was completley freaked out by the young man but quickly turned herself towards "Lucy" confusing him for Luffy. Rebecca was more clever and warned Lan that it wasn't him. Sabo was able to recognize Lan immediately and remarked that she had really changed since their last encounter, mentionning the name of the island they met in. Lan immediately got the hint and recognized Sabo. Before she could talk back to him, the man changed the subject and declared that although she had decided to gave up in the Mera Mera fruit for Rebecca to have it, he'd be the one to actually eat it.

Shortly after her encounter with Sabo, the final round was about to begin. After changing into her own clothes, Lan tried to go out and watch the final round but was stopped by an employee of the Colosseum. Lan was told that she needed to be seen by a doctor for a procedural check-up. Believing the lie, Lan followed the employee and was brought to a dark room. After naively laying down on the medical bed, it opened and let Lan fall into an unknown place. Not having anytime to think, right after landing on the floor, a sticky and viscous material caught the woman and brought her into the executive tower. Unlike the other prisoners, Lan was able to break free from Trebol's mucus and fought back against the executive. However, she was rapidly outnumbered by the arrival of another executive of the family, Juan. In a moment of inattention, Lan was turned into a doll by Sugar and taken away by Juan. Even though Juan immediately forgot about her existence, he knew that she was the doll he personally asked for from Sugar and so, he kept Lan by his side believing that she would never leave him. Chained by a contract, all Lan could do was to obey the creepy man and act as his girlfriend.
Luckily, Lan was able to turn back into her human form alongside the dozens of women Sugar had transformed for Juan. Not wanting to let anyone of them go, Juan was ready to kill the helpless women. But Lan was not going to let him have his way and engaged in a fight against him, allowing the women to escape. The fight led the 2 of them into the corridors of Doflamingo's palace, until Juan had to put a halt on the fight. Thanks to Peeka's power, he was able to flee and get to Trebol's and Diamante's side to protect the SMILE Factory. Clueless about his whereabouts, Lan looked for him through the palace and ended up by chance nearby Doflamingo's location. She witnessed Luffy confronting him and came to rescue him as 2 Doflamingos were about to strike Luffy and Kyros. After putting them out of danger she rushed in to attack the former warlord. After exchanging a few hits, Lan was sent blown away before being sent out of the castle alongside Luffy and his allies. Having a short time to rest while the birdcage was being put on, Lan was finally able to greet Luffy. Thrilled to see each other again, they both ran into each others' arms and catch up on each others. Zoro joined the group and was happy to see Lan again. Finally noticing Law who was tied up, Lan nonchalantly greeted him as well before asking about Bepo's whereabouts. Their joy was quickly cut short as Doflamingo made an announcement to the entire country. Alongside all the people against Doflamingo, Lan was wanted as a 2 star enemy. After quickly getting a grasp of the situation, she decided to join Luffy and his friends in taking down Doflamingo. Alongside with Zoro and Law, Lan hopped onto Luffy and they all jumped off the King's plateau to go and find Doflamingo.

After landing safely, the group was surrounded by enemies and soon ran into the admiral Fujitora. However, before they could confront him seriously, Peeka appeared. Pissed of by Luffy mocking his high pitched voice, the executive was determined to crush Luffy down. While they ran away, Lan could be seen holding up her laugh but ended bursting out a little as she tried to scold Luffy and Zoro for laughing as well. Peeka's hit made the group fly away but they were soon joined by the pirates that were participating in the Corrida Colosseum tournament. All together, they rushed towards Doflamingo's location.
While riding Ushi on Peeka's stone arm, the Doglamingo's executive appeared in his human form to stop them. Getting off of the bull, Lan rushed behind Peeka and with her whip, caught the bull's legs and flew him and his passengers over Peeka's head, gaining great distance. Not on board anymore, Lan stayed behind with Zoro to fight Peeka but the executive was soon joined by his colleague Juan. Outraged to see Lan with other men and assuming she was "cheating" on him, the mad man was ready to kill her.
Not caring baout his motives, Lan still engaged in the fight as he was part of the opposite side. Moreover, she was sick of his erratic and irrespectful behaviour towards the people of Dressrosa. Their fight mainly took place on the 1st level of the base of the palace and after much struggle, Lan managed to come out as the winner of the fight.
Now free to go help others, Lan joined Zoro who was still in the middle of finding out how he could beat up Peeka. The swordsman came up with a plan and asked Lan and Orlumbus to help him in making him fly towards the Doflamingo executive. After being thrown towards Peeka, Lan used her whip midair to catch Zoro and catapulted the man towards the rock man. After he was able to defeat the executive, she joined him and Usopp on the King's plateau, using her Geppo technique. Usopp finally discovered that Lan was also on Dressrosa and was delighted to see her again.
Now with only Doflamingo to be defeated, Lan joined Zoro and the others to try and stop the birdcage from advancing further. While Zoro took care of one side of the cage with Kin'Emon and Kanjurô, Lan took some men with her and ran towards the other end of the cage. Thanks to her seastone imbued whip, all the men she brought with her could hold onto it and push against the cage. However on their way to the other side of birdcage, Lan noticed Burgess and went into his direction, leaving the group of men taking care of the birdcage using her whip. She quickly arrived and jumped in to prevent the Blackbeard pirate from attacking Luffy alongside Sabo. Learning that Luffy needed time to regenerate his Haki, Lan proposed herself to occupy Doflamingo while Luffy recovered. But Burgess had no intention to let her go, and tried to recruit her for his captain now that she had no crew to go back to, reminding her how the Whitebeards lost to the Blackbeards a year ago. Before Lan could refuse his offer, Luffy furiously claimed that she wasn't going in anyone's crew because she was part of his. Touched but also taken aback by Luffy's claim, Lan pinched his cheek, scolding him for deciding by himself without consulting her, just like Ace did years ago. Not confirming her admission in the Strawhats yet, Lan just left to find Doflamingo, leaving Sabo taking care of Burgess and Gatz running away with Luffy.
Confronting Doflamingo head on, Lan was able to prevent Rebecca from killing Viola under Doflamingo's strings' control. Annoyed by her appearance, Doflamingo condescendingly asked her who she thought she was for meddling in his business. Lan confidently replied that she had come to buy time for her captain as the newest Strawhat member.
Outraged by the man's way of doing, Lan tried her best to contain the former warlord but without her weapon and exhausted by her fight against Juan, her attacks were limited. Severly injured by Doflamingo, Lan was pushed to her physical limits and as she was about to take a critical hit from him, Luffy appeared between her and Doflamingo thanks to Law's power. After being able to recharge his Haki, Luffy turned into his gear 4 form once again and landed his final blow on Doflamingo, winning the fight. Unable to move from the fatigue, Luffy was falling from the sky and caught by Lan who used her remaining strength to do so. With Luffy in her arms, Lan sighed in relief at the announcement of his victory and in an endearing manner blamed him for being always reckless.

After all the events prior, the Strawhats and Lan were resting in Kyros' house. At night, they had Sabo's visit. The young man took this opportunity to see Luffy and tell his friends about him before leaving. Lan, who was on the rooftop watching the moon, notice the man leaving and approached him. She apologized to him for having killed so many of his comrades in the past but she also wanted to thank him for opening her eyes about her wrong-doings. Lan strongly believed that if she didn't met Sabo years ago, she wouldn't have been able to meet Ace and be where she was. Sabo was still not used to her leaving the CP9 but if Ace and even Luffy trusted her then he was willing to do so. As Lan was the person Ace spent a lot of time with when he was alive, Sabo was quite curious about what kind of man he had become. Lan claimed Ace to be her hero and assured him he lived a life without regrets. Not having the time to listen to Lan's story Sabo had to leave but the woman agreed on telling him more stories about his brother whenever he wanted to. Sabo left Luffy into her care and bid goodbye to the woman before riding a raven to leave and join his comrades.
Days have passed and Luffy regain consciousness. Lan had mostly all recovered and was wondering about the rumors about Rebecca's father. Kyros explained them he was the one who invented the rumor in order to protect Rebecca but Luffy was not satisfied with the explanation and so was Lan. However, their leisurely time quickly came to an end as Bartolomeo came to inform them that the navy was on their move to capture them. Not wasting any minute, the pirates quickly left Kyros' home and ran away in direction of the port with the help of all the pirates they've met in Dressrosa, the Tontattas and the inhabitants. The pirates succesfully boarded the Yonta Maria where the Strawhat Grand Fleet was officially formed.

Whole Cake Island Saga

Zô Arc

After festing on the Yonta Maria, the Strawhats switched to Bartolomeo's ship to reach Zô and reunite with the rest of the crew. On their way there, Lan was able to tell Luffy and his friends about her whereabouts during the last 2 years and revealed she spent a year in Zô training.
After much trouble, the crew arrived in Zô. Riding Ryûnosuke, a dragon drawn by Kanjurô, the pirates climbed up the giant elephant to reach to the top. Once at the entrance, Lan was disturbed by the deserted area and understood quickly that something had happened. Leaving the group behind, she rushed alone into the forest. Luffy wandered by himself as well and got attacked by the Whale Forest's guardians. Hearing the ruckus, Lan rushed to his side and tried to appeal to the two guardians but without any objects to calm them down, she had no choice but avoid their attacks while stopping Luffy from attacking them as well. Thankfully, Wanda and Carrot came in time and appeased the two beasts. Recognizing Lan, both rushed to her and greeted her gleefully before taking her and Luffy to their village. After learning the attack the Minks were victims of, Luffy and Lan reunited with the rest of the group and joined the rest of the crew inside a fort the Minks made after Jack's attack. There, they learnt about Sanji's absence and family background. Not wanting to let Sanji leave his crew, Luffy decided to go to Whole Cake island and retrieve him.
On the morning of the departure, the Strawhats finally learnt about the link between the Mink tribe and the Kozuki clan. After meeting with Raizô, the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai alliance was officially made in order to go after Kaidô. In addition to the alliance, Nekomamushi intended to hire Marco to their side as well and planned on going and finding him.
Peace on Zô didn't last long as Jack had come back to launch another attack on the island again. But thanks to Momonosuke's order, Zunesha was about to counter-attack and sinked Jack's ship.
Shortly after the attack, Lan helped Chopper and the minks assisting Zunesha's injuries. They, then, all split into teams. Lan hesitated in going with Nekomamushi to meet with Marco but she was sure that the cat would be able to recruit him so she'd see him in Wano Country. However, just in case Nekomamushi wouldn't be able to convince the doctor she handed him a letter adressed to Marco and another one for Irene. Eventually, Lan was invited by Luffy to join his team to Whole Cake island.

Whole Cake Island Arc

On their way to Whole Cake island, Lan volunteered to make food for everyone but she was so bad at it, Luffy took over. However, Luffy happened to be even worse than her and even used all of their rations.
Completely out of food, the men tried to fish in the sea but the only fish they could catch was a poisonous one. Unfortunately, Luffy ate it and became sick. Coincidentally, the Sunny ran into the Vinsmoke Family's ship. Reiju helped out Luffy by sucking out the poison inside his body, saving his life. Relieved to see him fine again, Lan, Carrot and Chopper hugged the captain in tears. After parting ways with the Germa 66, the Strawhats quickly arrived to Chocolatown. In order to blend in, they all changed their clothes. In town, they met with Pudding, Sanji's fiancee. After talking to the young girl, she agreed with them to bring them Sanji so they could flee with him and so they all agreed to meet the next day in Whole Cake island.
Following Pudding's instructions, the Strawhats quickly arrived at the meeting point. It was decided to split into 2 teams : one bringing back Sanji while the other had to find the Road Poneglyph and copy it. As she was good at infiltrating due to her past as a CP9 agent, Lan joined Brook and Pedro in their mission of retrieving the Poneglyph. The three of them boarded the Shark Submerge III and left.
On their arrival in Sweet city, they learned about Jinbe leaving Big Mom's crew but also about the fact that their presence in Big Mom's territory was already known by the enemies, realizing how much more dangerous the situation was. But not letting this information discourage them, the pirates successfully infiltrated the Whole Cake chateau. And after locating the Road Poneglyph, it was agreed to let Pedro take the role of the bait while Lan and Brook looked for the Road Poneglyph. Brook was the one who got to go inside the Treasure Room to look for it while Lan was guarding the entrance from enemies. Smoothie quickly came and a fight between the two women started. But their fight was interrupted by Big Mom herself as she was upset that intruders were causing troubles during the wedding's preparations. The Emperor dismissed her sweet commander and confronted Lan herself. The fight was fierce but Lan was not strong enough and got blown away and crushed herself through the Treasur Room's door, interrupting Brook in his search for the Road Poneglyph. Brook joined Lan to confront Big Mom but both were not enough to take down the Emperor. Their defeat led Brook to be Big Mom's pet while Lan's unconscious body was brought to her personal library where she would be imprisoned in one of her books. On her way to the said library, the soldiers in charge to bring her there ran into Jinbei who beat them up to save Lan. With Lan in his arms, he pretended to bring her himself to Opera but instead knocked him down and freed Luffy and Nami from their cell. After getting out, Luffy rushed to the castle's exit in order to join Sanji at their meeting point. Meanwhile, Lan was under Nami's and Jinbei's care.
As they tried to escape all of Big Mom's underling, the three of them got saved by Chopper's team bringing them into the mirror world. Once inside, Lan finally woke up, still shaken by her fight against Big Mom. She informed the group about her fight and about Brook's whereabouts. After learning Brook's fate, they all searched for a mirror leading them to Big Mom. Luckily they found it but discovered with horror that she was actually sleeping with the skeleton in her arms. After multiple attempts, Brook was finally saved from Big Mom and brought to the mirror world. The musician nonchalantly give them the copy of the Road Poneglyph he got, shocking them all, especially Lan who was feeling sorry for not being able to steal enough time for him. On top of the copy of the Road Poneglyph, Brook was also able to find strings imbued with seastone for Lan. The skeleton actually had overheard Lan's wish for a new whip back in Zô and stole those strings for her. Now that the Road Poneglyph was acquired, only the matter of Sanji was left. And so, using the mirrors, they were able to establish communication with the two pirates. Luffy had changed their plans and was intending to crush down Big Mom's tea party in order to save the Vinsmoke family so that Sanji could finally come back to the crew. In order to succeed, Jinbe proposed Luffy to join force with Bege.

At their arrival at Bege's base, Lan got to finally wash herself and changed into new clothes for the tea party. The pirates soon joined the Bege pirates to come up with a plan to take down Big Mom.
The next day, the tea party began. Almost running late for it, the Strawhats arrived on time and at the signal, appeared on the scene. Lan mainly acted as a back up for Luffy allowing him to show Big Mom the broken photo of Mother Caramel and lifting the Haki protecting her. Bege and his men took this opportunity to execute her but the plan failed. Unable to flee through the mirrors like they intended to, the pirates had to hide inside Bege's castle form. Although the situation seemed disadvantageous to the Strawhats, they were able to take the opportunity to ran away while the outside was in complete chaos from the explosion of the Tamatebako.

In order to leave Totto Land, the Strawhats had to go back to the Sunny. While Brook and Chopper went to get back the Shark Submerge III, Lan stayed with Luffy and the others to go back to the Sunny. Despite being chased by Big Mom, they managed to reach their ship. But in order to be able to flee safely, Sanji had to stay behind to make a cake and put an end to Big Mom's craving fit.
Arriving on their ship, Luffy started to fight against Katakuri who was waiting for the Strawhats and ambush them. As Lan was helping Nami loading cola for the Sunny to escape, the ship suddenly was trapped in candy made by Perospero. Going out on the deck to go confronting Big Mom's son, Lan was stopped by Pedro who took the responsibility to do it. After holding on Perospero, Pedro sacrificed hismelf by using explosives hidden under his blazer. The heat of the nearby explosion melted the candy coating Chopper, Brook and the Sunny, allowing the Strawhats to fly away. In all the commotion of their escape, Luffy had to take Katakuri with him in the mirror world so that the sweet commander could finally leave their ship. Once calm came back to the ship, all were mourning Pedro's death but Jinbe prompted them to stop and focus on their escape. Lan supported the fishman showing off a cold demeanour to Carrot's disappointment. Knowing all too well how much a sacrifice means, honoring Pedro's gesture by surviving was the right answer for Lan. Jinbe then scolded the rest of the crew, reminding them what Pedro's death really meant for them. It was a chance that he gave them. It would be disrespectful to throw it to waste. They were going to get out alive of Totto Land.
Thanks to Jinbe's speech, all the crew members were extremely reactive and on guard. Unfortunately, Big Mom was tailing them and was determined to get her wedding cake from them. At the same time, Lan heard Luffy's voice coming out from a piece of broken glass. She picked it up and was ordered to break all of the mirrors on the ship. Firstly hesitant to do so, Lan was cut off from the conversation as a tsunami was about to crash on them. Luckily, the Sunny was able to surf on the wave using the green room thanks to Jinbe and escape the attack. Once out of it, Lan was able to go and destroy all the mirrors on ship, ordering the others to do so as well, as it was their captain's order. Once done, they went back to Luffy, giving him rendez-vous at 1 o'clock in the morning in Cacao island where he would meet up with Sanji and get on the Sunny back.
After having some time to rest a little, the Thousand Sunny was soon caught up by Big Mom and her army. With ships coming from behind and in front of them, Carrot turned into her Sulong form to take care of the ship in front while Lan left the ship to destroy the ones coming from behind. Easily destroying the tartes, Lan soon changed her target and aimed at the bigger ships. Not wasting much energy on fighting against the commanders, Lan was mainly focusing in preventing the ships from functioning again. Unfortunately, Lan couldn't roam freely behind Big Mom who was growing annoyed at the woman. Using her sword, she hit violently Lan who got blown away and landed back on the Sunny. Following Lan, Big Mom had now set foot on the Thousand Sunny looking for her wedding cake. Completley out of control she was going havoc on the ship. Working as a team, the Strawhats were able to throw her out of the ship. Shortly after, Sanji could be seen from afar, with Bege, bringing the long awaited wedding cake. Starving, Big Mom finally left the Strawhats to go and eat the cake while Sanji had finally come back to the Sunny. Safe from an attack from Big Mom, the only thing that needed to be done was to meet up with Luffy in Cacao island.
While heading towards Cacao island, the Thousand Sunny was still being chased by Smoothie who was determined to sink Lan with the ship. The sweet commander kept on throwing attack at them but Lan was there to deflect them while Jinbe maneuver the ship to dodge them. Soon the time of their rendez-vous with Luffy came. After winning against Katakuri, Luffy finally came out of the mirror world and with Pekoms', Sanji's and the Germa 66's help, he was able to return safely to the Thousand Sunny.
Thanks to the Sun pirates' help, the Strawhats were able to escape Totto Land in extremis, although they had to leave Jinbe behind.

Wano Country Saga

Reverie Arc

Now out of Totto Land, the Strawhats were finally able to enjoy some peace. Lan soon discovered her new bounty which was of RHI1O5e.png400,000,000.
On Sphinx, Nekomamushi was able to find Marco and proposed him to join their battle in Wano Country against Kaidô. Marco refused as he wanted to stay on Whitebeard's homeland and help its people. Not insisting, Nekomamushi seemed to just accepted Marco's choice but gave him and Irene Lan's letters as way to convince the pheonix man to join his cause.

Wano Country Arc

First act

After succesfully entering Wano Country, Luffy, unfortunately, got separated from the group in Kuri where he met O-Tama. He soon met up with Zoro and Law and found the rest of the group who had already got in touch with Kin'Emon. Now that they were all reunited, Kin'Emon informed them about the rest of the crew's whereabouts and told them about the story of Wano Country and Oden. The plan to take down Kaidô was also exposed and in order to not catch the enemy's attention, the Strawhats were given different role to fit in the population of Wano Country. Lan was given the role of a Miko as she was goign to team up with Brook in the infiltration mission of Orochi's castle. After changing into their new clothes, the group was interrupted by Kaidô who had come down to deal with Luffy. Luffy confronted the emperor without any hesitation but suffered an undisputable loss and was imprisoned in Udon. After knocking down Luffy, Kaidô approached Oden's castle and destroyed it with a fire breath. While Shinobu helped the males escape through the ground and Sanji took care of Nami, Lan took Carrot in her arms and fleed the location.

Second act

Not losing sight of their objective, the Strawhats were all diligent in recruiting samurais to their cause. Working in duo with Brook, Lan offered her exorcism services to random houses and people in hopes to find samurais with the Kozuki clan's tattoo. The fake miko rapidly gained popularity amongst the men of the country for her beauty and her abnormally short hakama. Lan had heard from Luffy about O-Tama and was aware that she had been injured by Kaidô. While the little girls was unconscious, Lan visited her daily but unfortunately couldn't be by her side the day she woke up as she had to go on her mission to infiltrate Orochi's castle. When O-Tama woke up, Chopper gave her a letter and box from Lan in which she was reassuring the girl and telling her about Ace's departure. Lan had also requested O-Tama to do her a favor.
Alongside with Brook, Lan infiltrated Orochi's castle to search for the Road Poneglyph. Witnessing the chaos going on during Orochi's banquet, Lan came into the room accompanied by Brook in his ghost form. She witnessed Komurasaki being slashed by Kyoshiro. She, then, stopped Orochi from attacking O-Toko, allowing everyone to escape. Exhausted by all those events, the girls decided to take a bath in the capital. But their leisurely time was interrupted by X Drake who came to look for Sanji. They learnt about their plan's leak and hurried to their base camp in Ebisu town where they met with Tonoyasu, O-Toko's father. In a meeting with Kanjurô, Shinobu, Sanji, Robin and Lan, Tonoyasu offered his help to the alliance. Shortly after, Lan left to go back to Ringo and stay hidden there as a miko. On her way to Ringo, Lan ran into a subordinate of Madame Batory who was ordered to capture her. Unwilling to cooperate, Lan defended herself and knocked down the woman. Shortly after this minor altercation, Lan arrived in Ringo and barged into the house Zoro and Hiyori were staying in as she heard Brook's voice coming from it. Claiming to be here to cleanse the house from evil spirits, Lan opened the door and discovered Zoro and Hiyori sharing a futon together. Pausing, she immediately got shy for "interrupting" them, annoying Zoro. Brook informed them about Tonoyasu's execution, shocking Zoro and Lan who had acquainted him. O-Toko rushed out of the house in direction of the capital. Unfortunately, they were not able to arrive on time to save the man and O-Toko had to witness her father's execution. Tonoyasu's death exposed the secret behind Ebisu's people's smile. The Strawhats discovered that they were fed with failed SMILE and were now destined to smile and laugh for eternity. However, suddenly O-Toko approached her father's body and was exposed to Orochi who shot at the child. Lan, Sanji and Zoro came in time to protect O-Toko. After Zoro tried to attack Orochi, a brawl began at the execution place. During the commotion, Lan was targeted by Madame Batory herself who had been accompanying Orochi to the execution place to ensure his safety. Taken aback by her strength, Lan had difficulties standing up against the woman and had to flee the execution place to prevent the samurais' plan to go to waste.
Days after the incident in the capital, the Strawhats were now all wanted in the country. Splitting into groups to flee the capital, Lan was with Robin, Brook and Usopp, taking care of O-Toko. They soon arrived at Amigasa village where Lan was finally able to reunite with O-Tama. The little girl did not forget about her request and had braided a new whip for Lan to use in the Onigashima Raid. During the days remaining until the raid, Lan spent them training with her new whip, catching up with O-Tama and taking part in Pedro's and Tonoyasu's funerals. Lan confirmed Ace's death to O-Tama, but also revealed to her that Luffy was actually Ace's little brother.

Third act

On the day of the Fire Festival, the Straw Hats sailed to Port Tokage on the Thousand Sunny to join the Scabbards and enter the battle with the Beasts Pirates. While Kanjuro fled to Onigashima with Momonosuke in tow, the Strawhats learned that Kanjuro was a spy working for Orochi. As the alliance was attacked by a Beasts Pirates ship with long ranged cannons, the Strawhats were overjoyed to see Jinbe arriving and joining the battle. With Jinbe officially part of the crew, the Strawhats proceeded to take over the port in front of Onigashima. The crew then arrived at Onigashima with the rebels. After disembarking, Lan received a Beasts Pirates disguise from Kin'emon. As they made their way into Kaidou's stronghold, Lan walked the way there with Jinbe and Robin. Lan, Robin, Jinbe, and several rebels later infiltrated the Performance Stage in the Skull Dome, where they found Momonosuke tied to a crucifix. Lan asked Jinbe if she should go and rescue him as she was itching to do it, but Jinbe told her to wait for the time to strike. When Big Mom later arrived on stage, Lan was shocked when she saw that Big Mom had captured Nami and Carrot. Robin then witnessed Kaidô announce his plans for his New Onigashima Project. Not being able to stand still, Lan eclipsed herself from Jinbe and Robin and took out her disguise and took part in the battle. Helping to free Momonosuke, she handed him over to Shinobu so she could put him in a safer place. She then protected them from an attack from Madame Batory. At that moment Lan was also able to meet briefly with Yamato again. Once the rest of the crew arrived, all of the Straw Hats assembled on the Live Stage. Later, still on the live stage level, Lan was fighting against the Beast pirates and the samurai infected by Queen's virus. But, as she was trying to protect Zoro who wasn't paying attention, she got bitten by one of Madame Batory's bat and became infected as well. As Lan had a quite strong immunity, the virus took more time to take over her body than the others but was still affecting her movements. Witnessing Lan's strong resistance, Madame Batory was more and more interested in Lan, believing that using her blood will help her maintain her youthful and powerful state. Obliged to guard the entrance to the ceiling of Kaidô's castle, Madame had to restrain herself for goign after Lan. Lan kept on fighting against the infected ones while trying to protect her comrades and waited for Zoro to take the antibody from Apoo. During his chase after Apoo, Zoro and Lan noticed Kiku's arm falling off the ceiling, reminding them how serious the situation was. Angry, Zoro stopped playing around and finally took the antibody from Apoo, giving it to Chopper. Quickly after, Marco arrived on the scene and helped in slowing the spread of the virus by putting the infected ones on fire. Seeing Marco again after a year, Lan jumped into his arms, crying but happy to see him again. Later, after Marco helped Zoro getting on the roof, Lan joined him to fight against King, Queen and Madame Batory. During the fight, Chopper was able to finish his antidote and cured every single person infected, inlcuding Lan. Now free to fight, Chopper fought Queen, while Lan and Marco were occupied with King and Madame. After a moment, Sanji arrived at the stage with Zoro with him. While fighting, Lan heard O-Tama's voice through the transmitter and was shocked to learn that the girl was on the battlefield. Gathering up her courage, O-Tama gave order to every Beast pirates she fed dangos with to ally with the Strawhats. Pissed off by the mess O-Tama has made, Madame was about to go and attack her but Lan got in between in order to protect her. Promising her to use the whip she made for her to win, both agreed on eating something delicious together once the battle would be over. Entrusting O-Tama to Nami and Usopp, Lan fully focused on taking down Madame.
During the fight, Lan was surprised to see Luffy on Momonosuke's dragon form coming through the roof.
Both women went all out, causing severe damage to each other. As the final blow, Lan used both of her whips with a mix of electro and fire from her Haki, launching two Rokuogan silmutaneously on Madame, knocking her out. O-Tama, who had witness the end of the fight, was in complete admiration. Lan asked her if she took good notes of her lesson before fainting from exhaustion. She was later transported to the Beast pirates' bathroom and taken care by O-Tama and Marco. As Law and Kid beat Big Mom, a shockwave was sent through the entire island, waking up Lan. At Kaidô's annoucement of his victory over Luffy, Lan was in complete in disbelief and was struggling to stand up to fight against Kaidô but Marco stopped her. However, her worry were quickly put to an end as she could feel Luffy's presence once again thanks to her observation Haki. After Luffy finally beat Kaidô and Onigashima landed safely on land, Lan was celebrating the victory with O-Tama and Nami.
The battle finished, the Strawhats gathered together and all met Yamato. As the rest of the crew was wary at first of him, Lan jumped in to defend her friend, assuring them he was not an enemy. She then learnt at the same time as everybody else that Yamato planned on joining the crew. Soon after, they all watched Momonosuke's ascention to be the next Shogun. Upon seeing it, O-Tama bursted into tears in Lan's arms. Teary eyed, Lan apologized for being late and keeping O-Tama wait for so long, hugging her back.

Peace have finally come back to Wano. The Strawhats were all recovering from the fierce battle that happened days ago, before partying all night to celebrate their victory. While the pirates and people of Wano Country were enjoying themselves, admiral Aramaki arrived on the island to catch Luffy and his crew. He was, thankfully stopped by Momonosuke, his guards and Shanks. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, Lan and Jinbe were watching the fight from afar and felt relieved to know that the samurais were able to protect their own country once they'd be gone.
The next days, the Strawhats had gathered to hear from Robin about Pluton. Shinobu, who had recovered from her fight against the admiral, arrived with O-Tama who had become her kunoichi apprentice while Lan would be away. Seeing O-Tama's new outfit, Nami rushed over to hug her and Lan followed. Shortly after, the pirates left the palace to leave the island. As they were preparing the ship at the Tokage port in Udon, the crew learnt about the creation of Cross Guild by Buggy, Mihawk and Crocodile. Right before they sailed away, Momonosuke, Yamato and Kin'Emon arrived on time for their departure. Sad to part ways with the crew, Momonosuke begged them to stay but instead Luffy gave him a flag of his jolly roger to show the world that he had now Wano Country under his protection. Bidding farewell to their new comrades, the Sunny sailed off for new adventures.

In order to leave Wano, the crew had to go to Hakumai where they would get on board of a shuttle to get down safely. However because of Kid's provocation, the Strawhats, as well as The Hearts, jumped of Wano Country's waterfall.

Family

Dao Cay

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Mother ]

Cay was a really loving and overprotective mother. She was ready to face any hardships so that her children could live a comfortable life. As a really down to earth person, supporting her family's needs was her priority and so apart from necessary items she would rarely buy any items related to leisure. Because of that, Lan and Cay were in a conflict about the illustration book her father bought her and then later the conflict extended towards the subject of Lan's dream. Cay had high expectations for Lan as her first-born, wanting her to take over the family business. The idea of letting her child travel in the dangerous seas was a nightmare as a mother.
Although, Lan was really upset initially about her mother's opposition, she still loved her dearly and was severely scarred by her death. After breaking free from the government and coming back to Moonhwa island, Lan was finally being able to apologize to her mother on her tombstone.

Dao Song

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Father ]

Unlike Cay, Song was more lenient towards his children. Even though he was not really good with words, he showed love to his children by always buying them candies or toys in secret. Despite his lenient side, he was still against the idea of letting Lan sailing on seas. Just like Cay, he couldn't let his dear daughter being exposed to the great dangers of the Grandline. But although he was against it, he would definitely support his daughter if she had dreams of a smaller scale.
Lan was more opened to her father and would always follow him on the days he had to do downtown to sell his merchandise. She has always seen him as a strong man, almost like a hero. Just like for her mother, his death and sacrifice deeply scarred her.

Dao San

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Younger brother ]

During their chidlhood, San and Lan were extremely close to each other. They were always seen playing together and sharing the same interests and friends. San was the first one to know about Lan's dream and dreamed hismelf of traveling at some point. Although they share a deep bond, Lan and San were often arguing with each other over trivial things, just like any siblings do. Just like their parents, the Dao siblings were not really good at expressing love with words. They both rarely shown any affection towards each other and even after meeting again after the destruction of the Pupa orphanage, they rarely used words to express their love. But the greatest show of love Lan showed towards San was to sacrifice and getting herself being captured for him to get away. San feels forever in debt since that day and has developped an immense sense of proudness for her. Unbeknownst to Lan, San had developed an area in his and Min's teashop dedicated to his sister. For this special area of the teashop, San and Min have created a book containing all of the journal articles talking about her, for the whole village to see.

Min

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Grandmother ]

Min is an old lady owning a little library at Moonhwa island. It was in her library that Lan discovered her favorite illustration book from which she developed her dream. Lan would often visit Min and she actually learnt how to write and read from the old lady. Even though they don't share any blood, Lan considers Min as a member of her family and deeply cares for her. The same can be said for Min who considers Lan and San as her own grandchildren. Aside from San, Min was also Lan's confident and personal councelor.
Just like San, Min has developed an immense sense of proudness regarding Lan and doesn't miss a single news about her.

Whitebeard pirates

Portgas D. Ace

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Former lover, former captain ]

Ace and Lan first met each other as Lan was trying to capture him. At that time, Lan had a really low esteem of pirates and so had a really bad opinion of Ace solely based on her prejudices. However as she spent time with him and the Spade pirates, her initial came to change for the better. Ace was able to prove to Lan that pirates could also be good people and that he was one of them. Ace's kindness is what attracted and intrigued Lan in the first place. Ace was also able to gain Lan's respect and trust.
Although, Lan was quite a secretive person at first, she finds it easy to talk to Ace. Both would often have long conversations which often ended up drifting onto the subject of Luffy. Ace was, by the way, comfortable enough around Lan to reveal her the identity of his biological father.
Despite all the respect and affection she has for him, Lan is also often reprimanding the pirate for his recklessness. The reprimanding would often end up in bickering. Although Lan always arbored a serious and calm demeanor during their first bickerings, she had become more expressive and would always pinch his cheeks whenever she scolds him.
Through their journey together, Ace and Lan eventually developed romantic for each other and started a relationship. Awkward at first, they soon became more comfortable about their new status. They were not the romantic type of couple and would rarely showcase PDA. The relationship unfortunately ended as Ace died during the summit war. To give him a tribute, Lan got a tattoo on her nape during the timeskip, even though she's scared of needles.
Ace's death caused a huge trauma on Lan. His loss was so painful, she unconsciously refused to wake up from her coma following the summit war. After the war, Lan is often spending her nights watching the stars and the moon as a way to talk with the ones that has left her. Ace is, of course, one of them, alongside her parents.
Even though Ace is not with her anymore, Lan has picked up on his eat-and-run habit unconsciously. This was not the only thing that changed. Ace had a great impact on Lan and it can be seen through the evolution of her personality, as she had gotten brighter since she met him. Overall, Ace was truly an impactful meeting in Lan's life and she feels extremely thankful and lucky to have met him.

Edward Newgate

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Former captain ]

As a former worker for the government, Lan knew very well who Whitebeard was and the threat he represented for the government.
Their first meeting was a little awkward but Whitebeard welcomed the young woman on his ship with kindness as he had heard a lot about her from Ace. Even though some crew members were against Lan's integration, Whitebeard did not care for her background as he believed that she has changed for the better.
Unlike the rest of the crew, Lan was not adressing the captain by the term "father" as she felt like she only had one unique father. Instead, she called him "grandfather". Whitebeard didn't mind and called her his grand-daughter in return. Nonetheless, just like the rest of the crew, she considers Whitebeard as a part of her family and deeply cared for him.
Although, Lan found it hard to approach him, she ended up sepnding a lot of time with him to hear stories about Ace's time as a newbie in the Whitebeards or stories about Edward's youth. Due to his poor health, Lan was often worried about the old man and would nag Irene and Marco to take good care of him.
Whitebeard's death did impact Lan a lot, motivating her to become stronger. Sha has later paid her respects for the late man on his tombstone after the timeskip.

Masked Deuce

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Former crewmate ]

Lan met with Deuce on Randam island. The man was wary of her at first as she introduced herself as a bounty hunter. Her mysterious past was intriguing for him and in order to be able to trust her fully, Deuce did some investigation about her. However, after the crew saved Kotatsu from poachers in Taïga Mount, Deuce began to be more indulgent towards her. Knowing that was ready to go against the government decreased the danger she represented for the crew. Both eventually got closer over books where Deuce learnt about her favorite illustration book.
Just like the rest of the Spades, Deuce was surprised to know that Lan was in fact a CP9 agent and was as eager as the others to help her get free from Evan.
As for Lan, she respects Deuce a lot for pursuing his dreams despite what his parents' opposition and enjoy talking about books with him. She is really grateful for his help during the destruction of the Pupa orphanage and for helping her getting rid of her chip.
Although they're not in the same crew anymore, Lan is waiting for him to finish and publish his book so she could read it.

Marco

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Former crewmate ]

Lan considers Marco as her older brother and have deep respect for the man. She sees him as a trustworthy man and was really delighted to know that he would be recruited to help them in taking down Kaidô. She praised him in front of the Strawhats to convince them that he would be a good asset to the team.
During the Onigashima raid, Lan was extremely happy to see Marco again, to the point where she broke into tears. Marco could also be seen to be quite protective towards her, personally taking care of her after her fight against Madame Batory.

Kotatsu

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Former pet ]

Kotatsu was really scared of humans and Lan made no exception. But after she attended his wound, the lynx flt comfortable around her. He was one of the first ones to show her affection in a long time and so she got really attached to him. Her affection for the animal pushed her to disobey orders from the government and so going againt the world nobles for the first time. Lan considers Kotatsu to be her first friend and often came to him to find comfort. She misses him now that he had stayed with Irene and Marco.

Thatch

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Former crewmate ]

Lan did appreciate Thatch a lot and did try to learn how to cook from him. Even though she still is really bad at it, she did appreciate the time she spent with him a lot and so his murder revolted her as much as the others, pushing her to follow Ace in his search for Blackbeard.

Strawhat pirates

Monkey D. Luffy

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Captain ]

Lan deeply cares for Luffy's well-being as he is Ace's little brother. Fascinated at first by all the stories about him she heard from Ace, Lan was really excited to meet him for the first time. Fascination turned into affection and respect as their shared adventures and battles together. Just like the other Strawhats, Luffy considered her a comrade even before she officially got in. This could be shown when they all agreed that she should also have the X mark drawn on her forearm, back in Arabasta. If she was not part of the Whitebeard when they first met, Luffy would have gladly recruited her for his own crew.
Meeting again in Impel Down and fighting side by side against a common enemy strengthten their bond and both were ready to entrust each other's life into the other's hands. Throwing her pride aside, Lan begged for Luffy's life, showing how much she cares for him. It was also at that time that Luffy learnt about Lan's past as a CP9 agent and assassin. He accepted her as she was and insisted on saving Ace together.
Although Lan was quite used to Ace's recklessness, she was still taken aback and dumbfounded by Luffy's. The young pirate's antics forced her to surprisingly lose temper a few times. As a logical and down-to-earth person, Lan had a hard time working with Luffy at first but soon gave up and learnt to improvise.
As a Strawhat, Lan has total faith in Luffy as a captain and is as devoted to him as the other crew member, supporting in his dream and ambitions. On the other hand, Luffy does appreciate Lan a lot and cares for her well-being as well. Worried about her as she was in a coma state after the Summit war, Luffy was ready to share some food with her to help her waking up.

Roronoa Zoro

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

Wary of Lan at first, Zoro quickly loosened up around her as they weirdly bonded while they were stuck on Mr. 3's castle candle. Lan does respects him as a strong fighter and trusts him during battles. Having each other's back during battles, Lan did not hesitate to entrust her life into Zoro's hands during the Onigashima's raid, believing he would get the antibodies to treat her from Queen's infection.
Like the other Strawhats, Lan does think that Zoro can be quite dumb some time and doesn't hesitate to tell him to his face. As she is bad at navigation and he doesn't have any orientation skills, they often bicker about which one is worst.

Nami

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

As she knew nothing about Lan, Nami was extremely scared of her at first, suspecting her to be a Baroque Works agent. Just like Zoro she eventually lowered her guard and befriended her. Touched by Lan's care while she was sick, Nami appreciates Lan a lot since then and sometimes refers to her as her big sister whenever Lan saves her from danger. As for Lan, she has a huge admiration for Nami's navigation skills and respects her a lot for it. After Lan's departure from the Merry in Arabasta, Nami was actually really sad to let her go and was sulking aboutit with Luffy, Chopper and Usopp.
Meeting again in Zô, Nami was delighted to see her again and welcomed her in the crew. On the Thousand Sunny, Lan spends most of her time hanging out with Nami and Robin. On their shopping spree, Lan often asks for Nami's advice on clothes.
In Wano, both were extremely caring towards O-Tama. They were both swooning together at O-Tama's shinobi outfit.

Usopp

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

Just like Nami, Usopp was extremely scared of Lan at first in Little Garden. But he eventually easened up around her. Grateful that she saved him against Ms. Valentine, Usopp is quite admirative of Lan's fighting skills. As for Lan, she has a high opinion of Usopp who, even though he is scared of a lot of things, can be courageous and honorable.
As they are both good at drawing, Lan learnt a lot from Usopp's artistic skills and admires him for them. Alongside Luffy, Nami and Chopper, Usopp was sad to let Lan go in Arabasta.
As a naive person, Lan always believe Usopp's lies and he often lies to her so she could save him or fight in his place. During the Dressrosa arc, Lan innocently believed that Usopp had become a god and always refuses to help him arguing that he is a god. It is still unclear wether she's teasing him or being serious.
During Zô, impressed by Usopp's manifacturing skills, Lan asked him to make a handle for her new whip.

Sanji

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

As an attractive and beautiful woman, Lan caught Sanji's eyes ever since their first meeting and just like any other girls, the cook automatically swoons over her. Weirded out at first, Lan quickly let it go and doen't min at all Sanji's fanboying. Even though she does respect him as a cook and skillful fighter, she does judge him for his pervy side. She was obviously upset that he used his Stealth Black costume to spy on her and the girls' during their bath in capital of Wano.
Knowing about Sanji's past and the abuse he suffered from his father, Lan has a sentiment of closeness to him as she was experienced on and forced to take part in inhumane training. And because, they've gone through a similar situation, she admires him for keeping his humanity through all these years, unlike her.

Tony Tony Chopper

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

Lan met Chopper after his fight against Wapol. She was immediately attracted by his cuteness and was admirative of his intelligence. When she first complimented him, she was taken aback by the insults Chopper uttered at her out of embarrassement. As Lan takes things at first degree, she was obviously hurt but Nami soon explained to her that the reindeer didn't mean anything he said but had actually really appreciate her compliments. Snce that moment, Lan absolutely loves drawing him because it makes him shy, thus making him even cuter. Just like Nami, Chopper acknowledges Lan's strength and refers to her as as his big sister whenever she saves him.

Nico Robin

[ Crewmate ]

As a former CP9 agent, Lan knew perfectly who Robin was and the power she holds. She actually felt sorry for all the pain the government has given her all those years and wanted to apologize to the woman herself. However, Robin didn't want Lan to apologize for something she hasn't done. Lan actually relies on Robin as she feels like an older sister to her.
As they're both interested in gardening, both woman actually take care of the flowers on the Sunny.

Franky

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

Lan had a hard time getting used to Franky's fashion style and still, to this day, can't understand it. On top of his fashion style, his antics are quite a mystery for her but she still tries to play along sometimes. Nonetheless, Lan still respects his work as a shipwright and has been really impressed with all the machines he has made.

Brook

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

Unexpectedly, Lan does get along with Brook pretty well. Despite the fact that his existence defies all logic, Lan quickly got past that fact and often teams up with him for infiltration missions. Lan was particularily impressed by him when he was able to have a copy of Big Mom's road poneglyph, seeing him as someone extremely trustworthy and reliable. After teaming up in Totland, they teamed up again in Wano. Lan was the miko while Brook played the role of the spirit she should exorcise.
Both also have develop some comical dynamics such as Lan ruining Brook's death jokes by spoiling them and refusing to show him her underwear because "Only Ace is allowed to see them.".

Jinbe

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Crewmate ]

Lan has immense respect for Jinbe. He's an incredible reliable person as he has saved her countless times since Impel Down. She also has heard a lot about him from Ace but only met him for the first time in Impel Down. Greatly delighted to see him again in Totland. As the Strawhat crew has an overall energetic vibe to it, Lan finds comfort in Jinbe's calmness.

Nefertari Vivi

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Lan immediately recognized Vivi as the Arabasta princess and was quite curious to know the reason why she was traveling with pirates. Just like the other Strawhats, Lan got really attached to Vivi and felt sad for not being able to stay in Arabasta to help her.
After seeing her again in the newspaper during the Reverie, Lan was quite happy to see Vivi doing well.
After the Wano arc, Lan was also worried about Vivi after learning she had disappeared and joined Luffy, Nami, Chopper and Sanji in insulting Zoro who showed a cold demeanor towards the news.

Mink tribe

Carrot

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Lan cares a lot about Carrot as a big sister. Although she likes to spoil her with carrots, she can also be tough on the rabbit girl when it is needed. This can be shown during the Whole Cake Island arc where Lan asked Carrot to stop crying Pedro's death and focus back on their escape from Totland. As they were both training under Pedro's teaching, Lan feels the need to hel her become an honorable warrior. Lan cares about her progress and growth as a warrior, and so feels extremely proud of Carrot whenever she manages to beat an enemy. She was above all proud of Carrot, when she released her Sulong form and helped the Strawhats destroy an important number of Tartes.
As Lan spent a whole year on Zô, she knows Carrot really well, especially how to calm her.

Pedro

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

Lan had big respect for Pedro as his teacher and ally. Even though Pedro was against her staying on Zô, he soon got really invested in her training and was the one helping her control her electro. On top of helping Lan during her training, Pedro was actually the one who took her to Dressrosa as she couldn't navigate at all.
Pedro's death did impact Lan as she felt the urge to progress and become stronger. Deeply saddened by his death, by respect for his sacrifice, Lan quickly suppressed her grief to use the opportunity Pedro gave the Strawhats to escape safely.
In wano, Lan can be seen participating in Pedro's funeral alongside Carrot, Wanda, Nekomamushi and Inuarashi.

Nekomamushi

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

As the Mink tribe was against letting a human in their village at first, Nekomamushi took Lan and let her stay in the Whale forest under his and Pedro's supervision. Not scared of the giant cat all, Lan quickly appealed to the leader by playing with him like she would with a regular cat. rather than scary, Lan finds him to be really cute and likes spending time playing with him when she's not training. However, even though she does appreciate him a lot, Lan always tries to avoid his impactful greetings him but always fails.

Inuarashi

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

As time passed, Lan became welcomed to the minks' village and Inuarashi proposed to Lan to take part in her training as well. Being against the idea, Nekomamushi began an argument with the dog about who should train Lan. In the end, Lan made a schedule where she would train with the 2 leaders alternatively and equally. As an animal lover, Lan also loved to play with Inuarashi and always bringing him a bone to chew on. Since Lan's stay on Zô, Nekomamushi and Inuarashi often ask Lan about who is the best trainer but Lan always evade the dilemma by diverting their attention.

Wanda

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Lan met Wanda later as she was able to step foot in Inuarashi's territory. Lan did rely a lot on Wanda to help her getting integrated in the minks tribe. Wanda taught her the minks' way of life and accompany her to Dressrosa with Pedro.

Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai alliance

Trafalgar D. Water Law

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

As someone who saved her life, Lan feels extremely grateful towards Law. Although she feels grateful today, she did resent him at first when she woke up from her coma. As she wanted to die and join Ace, she was upset that a stranger would save her. Law did not really care about her anger and just kept on giving her medical care but Lan would show resistance and refuse it. Eventually, in order to treat her probably, Law shared to Lan Luffy's wishes for her to live and his duty to fulfill his promise to Luffy because he didn't want to be in debt to him. He reminded her that dying was not the solution as it would mean that it was her total loss. Just like him, she needed to take revenge on those who took away the people they love. Law's words influenced Lan and she became more inclined to receive treatment.
During the Dressrosa arc, Lan was glad to meet Law again but was more interested in Bepo's whereabout. After the whole ordeal, Lan was curious about to know how he felt after finally getting revenge but the man only teased her by doing it and see for herself.

Bepo

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

Lan had a soft spot for Bepo from the start and loved hugging him when she was on Law's submarine. He is literally the Hearts crew member she cares about the most, to the point that it was the first question she asked Law when she met him again after a year.
During the Wano arc, when Shinobu was accusing Bepo and the other Heart pirates to have betrayed their alliance, Lan took Bepo's defense.

Yamato

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Lan met Yamato back when she first went to Wano with Ace. Shocked to learn that he was Kaidô's son, his light-hearted personality easily reached Lan and she got quickly comfortable with him. After stopping Yamato and Ace from fighting, Lan spent time with them talking about the sea. Lan was touched by Yaamto's courage and wanted to help him being free just like Ace did for her. Unfortunately, lan could not meet Yamato again until she got into Luffy's crew.
Lan and Yamato met again during the Onigashima Raid. Although they were really happy to see each other again, they reunion was cut short by the danger surrounding them and the emergency of the situation.
While everyone was waiting for Lufffy's and Zoro's recovery, Lan got to catch up with Yamato and they spent nights talking. The day of the Strawhats' departure from Wano, Lan was disappointed to learn that Yamato would not join the crew but believed that they would travel together some day.

Strawhat Grand Fleet

Bartolomeo

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

Lan is a little freaked out by his extreme love for Luffy and his crew. She doesn't quite understand why he admires her so much and knows so much about her life and Ace's. Lan gave Bartolomeo her autograph after the Dressrosa arc.

Cavendish

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally ]

Lan doesn't really like Cavendish's obsession with popularity and the fact that he tried to kill Luffy doesn't help. Nonetheless, she aknowledges his strength and was impressed by his speed when he switched to Hakuba during the Block D round at the Colosseum.

CP9

As for her relationships with the other CP9 agents, Lan wasn't particularily close to any of them. The reason being mainly because Lan lacked social skills. All that mattered for her was to achieve her missions successfully. She would rarely talk and only did it if it was related to work.

Rob Lucci

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy, former colleague ]

Lan did not befriend Lucci at all while she was in the CP9 and as both are quiet people, they rarely talked to each other except for work-related subjetcs. Although they wer'ent close at all, Lucci did kept an eye on Lan during her days as a CP9 agent as he saw potential in her. However, he was quite disappointed to know she had left the government to become a pirate, while he was in Water 7. As for Lan, she was also impressed by his fighting abilities and skills. The only thing that she really likes about him is his pigeon.

Kaku

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy, former colleague ]

Unlike Lucci, Kaku was more approachable to Lan and he actually was the only member she felt like being close to. As they both kept some empathy as CP9 agents, they shared the same problems and issues. After learning about Lan's departure, Kaku was disappointed but could understand a little her choice.

Spandam

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy, former boss ]

Lan has always hated Spandam. His incapacity, lack of charisma and lack of intelligence bothered her a lot as his subordinate. As for Spandam, he only saw Lan as a tool and was often condescending towards her as she never talked back to him unlike the other members.

Revolutionaries

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg

Sabo

[ Ally, former enemy ]

Lan was infamous amongst the revolutionaries when she was active in the CP9. And so, Sabo learnt about her through the different reports of his colleagues. Angry that sha had kill so many of his comrades, Sabo wished to find her and get revenge for all of his fallen friends. His wishes came true and he was able to meet Lan 6 years before the Dressrosa arc. At that time, Sabo's words hit Lan and made her question her actions as a CP9 agent and eventually pushed her to run away from the government. Although she saw him as an enemy to eliminate, Lan considers that her encounter with Sabo is an important moment in her life and she feels grateful that he was able to open her eyes on the harsh truth of her life. As for Sabo, even though he resented her a lot as a teenager, knowing that Ace and Luffy trusted her, he was willing to put her past on the side and let her be. However, Sabo was still wary of Lan and couldn't fully trust her until she also saved Luffy from Burgess.
After the Dressrosa's battles, Sabo seemed to be appreciate Lan's presence a little more and wished to hear stories about Ace from her.

Invankov

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Ally, former enemy ]

Lan was actually the one who captures Ivankov and sent him to Impel Down after making a deal with him. Because Lan didn't fulfill her part of the deal, Ivankov resented her a lot and had a really low opinion of her.
Seeing her again in Impel Down, Ivankov was tempted to let her die in the snow but seeing her being so desperate for someone else, he eventually gave in and rescued her as well on top of Luffy and Bonclay. Ivankov justifies his gesture by saying that he would be considered a worst person than her if he let die people unrelated to their conflict. Later, Lan's resolution and love for Ace did moved him a little, allowing him to help her retrieving her whip before leaving for Marineford
As of today, Ivankov doesn't really hold any grudge against Lan anymore.

Baroque Works

Bonclay

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Meeting them for the first time on the Merry, Lan was first really fascinating by their devil fruit but quickly felt uncomfortable around them after they showed her naked body to the crew.
Meeting again Impel Down, Lan was not that happy to see him again but let it pass since he was willing to help her and Luffy. However, they both entered into a minor conflict after Bonclay learnt that Lan was the one responsible of Ivankov's imprisonment. Eventually, their relationship got better after Bonclay came back to get Luffy and Lan out of their cell in level 5 of Impel Down. Bonclay was also touched to know that Lan threw her pride aside to save his life. Later, Lan was crying over Bonclay's sacrifice and was extremely grateful.

Other

Apgar Irene

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Lan and Irene first met at the Pupa orphanage. Irene had saved Lan from Evan and kept her hidden in her room. Although Lan was not fullytrustin Irene at first because she was an employee of Pupa orphanage, Irene's good heart convince her to the point that she entrusted her life to the woman by asking her to remove her chip.
After the orphanage's destruction, Irene joined the medical team of the Whitebeard. Whenever Lan was on the Mobydick, she would spent time with Irene and eventually learnt some medical techniques and treatments from her.
After the timeskip, Irene was really excited and relieved to receive a letter from Lan delivered by Nekomamushi. In return, Irene wrote a letter for Lan as well, which she read during her training in Wano. Irene could be considered as Lan's best friend during her time in the Whitebeards.

O-Tama

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend, apprentice ]

O-Tama first encountered Lan when she arrived with Ace. After witnessing her fighting skills, the girl chose Lan to be her master and teach her how to be an enchanting kunoichi like her. Lan was pretty confused at first but accepted the title nonetheless and was quite serious about O-Tama's lessons. In return, Lan leanrt how to make strawhats but was so bad at it that O-Tama wanted to give up on teaching her. Just like for Yamato, Lan wished to free O-Tama of the current Wano so that she could be able to eat to her heart's content. She was able to fulfill her promise after joining Luffy's crew. Extremely protective and caring towards O-Tama, Lan was itching go see her after she woke up after being attacked by Kaidô. However, because of the infiltration mission going on, Lan refrained herself and entrusted her to Chopper. Lan also had faith in O-Tama's abilities and entrusted her with the making of her new whip.
Like Nami, Lan finds O-Tama adorable and do not hesitate showing affection towards her.

Rebecca

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Friend ]

Lan and Rebecca befriended each other during the tournament of the Colosseum. Even though they were both opponents in the same block, Lan was really touched and moved by the relationship between Rebecca and her father, Kyros. It moved her so much, that Lan was ready to hand over the Mera Mera fruit to Rebecca, losing to her the first round of the tournament on purpose.
Later, during the arc, Lan saved Rebecca from killing Violet and tried to comfort her, assuring her that she would be able to live with her father.

Enemies

Frost Evan

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy, former boss ]

Lan first met Evan when she was only 6 in Moonhwa island. Naive and fascinated by him because he was a foreigner, Lan was quite admirative of the man. Later, as she grew up in the Pupa orphanage under his supervision, Lan developed an unexplicable devotion and faith towards him. As for Evan, Lan was just another subject to test on like all the other children in his orphanage. However, as soon as she started to show good results, supporting his work, Evan became more interested in her. As his sole successful "product", Evan was extemely proud of Lan as her "creator". He never saw her as a human being but rather as a mean for him to get recognition for his work as a scientist. But also because he was not able to create another "doll" as effective as Lan, she was all the more precious to him.
After learnign about Evan's true nature and his lies, Lan, eventually, came to despise him and was adament in destroying the horrific place he kept her imprisoned in.

Marshall D. Teach

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy, former crewmate ]

Back when Teach was part of the Whitebeards, Lan didn't have any particular opinion about him but he seemed like someone nice to her. After learning about Thatch's murder, Lan was immediately revolted by it.After the several encounters with him, it seems like each time Lan's disgust and hate for the man get bigger and bigger. During those encounters, Teach has tried to recruit her in his crew, seemingly showing interest in her as a woman.
Although Lan has quit her life as an assassin, Teach is definitely a man she's ready to kill if she gets the opportunity. Lan sees him as one of the people who took away what she cherished the most.

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg

Sakazuki Akainu

[ Enemy ]

Lan knew who Akainu was as one the navy admiral, but she really met him during the Summit war. As Ace's murderer, she cannot even stand seeing a picture of him. Her hatred for the man only increased after learning that he was the one financing Evan's orphanage. As someone who gives importance to justice, Lan cannot agree with Akainu's twisted justice and disregard towards life.
Although Lan has quit her life as an assassin, Akainu is definitely a man she's ready to kill if she gets the opportunity. Lan sees him as one of the people who took away what she cherished the most.

Donquixote Doflamingo

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy ]

Lan holds disdain and disgust towards Doflamingo as he has absolutely no respect for human life. Moreover, the fact that he killed his own little brother was an act beyond comprehension for Lan. During the Dressrosa, Lan confronted him twice and even though she was no match for him, Doflamingo did find her to be annoying for meddling in each time.

Juan

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy ]

Juan was one of the Donquixote family's executive. Lan ran into him in the streets of Dressrosa during her arrival on the island. Lan was trying to escape from navy soldiers looking for her and approached Juan, pretending to be his girlfriend in order to fool the soldiers. Juan did play along and Lan was really grateful for it. Juan totally misinterpretated the situation. He had fallen in love with her and strongly believed that they were in a relationship. And so, seeing Lan being friendly and close to other men, Juan misinterpretated the situation again, believing that Lan was cheating on him. It was one of the main reason why Juan fought her during the Dressrosa arc.
As for Lan, she doesn't see Juan as a potential romantic interest at all and cannot understand his reasoning at all. Rejecting him relentlessly during their fight, Lan's faithfulness towards Ace amazed Juan, making him change his opinion about the woman. Juan became completely infatuated with Lan and has a huge crush on her. As one of the few members of the Donquixote Family to escape from the Navy, Juan spends most of his time dreaming about Lan and collecting every news about her.

Big Mom

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy ]

Lan mostly doesn't get scared easily of enemies but she does feel slightly intimidated by Big Mom. During the infiltration of her treasure room, Lan had to fight against Big Mom in order to give time for Brook to find the road poneglyph and possibly hide himself. As for Big Mom, she doesn't really find Lan threatening but became quite annoyed at all her attempts to hurt her.

Smoothie

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy ]

Before Big Mom's arrival, Lan was fighting Smoothie, preventing her and her subordinates to go in the treasure room. Because she was scolded by her mother for not being able to get rid of Lan quicker, Smoothie had become obsessed with beating her. The loss of several Tartes during the Strawhats' escape, fuel Smoothie's anger towards Lan, making her more determined to make their ship sink to the bottom of the sea.

Madame Batory

28690037_uIOQppEUaQT6kep.jpg
[ Enemy ]

Madame Batory was a Beast pirate Lan fought during the Onigashima Raid. Obsessed with youth and vigor, Madame heard about the new miko in town and was really impressed by Lan's youthful beauty. For that reason, she first sent a subordinate after her to capture her. However, that subordinate was not strong enough and was beaten by Lan. Finally meeting each other on Onigashima, Madame was determined to have Lan for herself and use her to achieve eternal beauty. Not caring baout Madame's ridiculous motives, Lan wasn't going to let her have her ways. Lan was mostly pissed off by the woman's behavior towards the samurai and got even angrier when she tried to attack O-Tama. But more importantly, Lan was determined to beat her to prove herself that she was worth and ready for the crew's journey to Laugh Tale.

Early concept and design

sriT1zt.jpg
"The Danging Panther Chronicles" cover

Originally, Lan was a character who came from the real world and fell by accident into the world of One Piece. Her character was build to fit in the Isekai concept but the idea was changed because I'm a bad writer and it didn't seem as interesting as her current story.
I started to tell her Isekai story through a 4 cases comic named "The Dancing Panther Chronicles" but never finished it since I decided to rewrite her character. The title "The Dancing Panther Chronicles" was chosen because I intended to give her "The Dancing Panther" as an epithet.

Her current design does not differ much from the initial one. The original design for Lan had glasses, a birthmark on her neck and dark brown eyes.
For her current design, the glasses were taken out and her eyes are now light purple-blue. The birthmark was originally put there because Lan's design was partially based on myself. However, with her new concept, the presence of the birthmark felt useless, that's why it was got rid of.
