For centuries, worshippers believed that if they buried a dog in the walls of a newborn church it’s spirit would rise and protect the churchyard from sacrilege and sin.  When decades of peace followed this, it became a tradition to carefully select the strongest of dogs and, upon completion of a church, lay them to rest eternally in its territory so that all would be protected.  These spirits came to be known as Church Grims

Grimwall is one such being!  Appearing as a gigantic black dog, Grimwall was once a Church Grim that dutifully protected the churchyard they were buried in, even long after the church itself had fallen to ruin and it’s yard became overgrown and reclaimed by the earth!  But after centuries of abandonment they adorned themselves in the tapestry and drapes of their church and left to wander the area around their fallen churchyard, toting ornaments of protection to ward off the unholy!
