Celeste Hiemal

Celeste Hiemal is one of two princesses of Luneia’s royal family, the Mosalas. Born a sorcerer of draconic ancestry, she was blessed (though some would say cursed) with ice magic from the silver dragon Orn. This power haunted her throughout her life and was a major source of strain between her and her parents, particularly her mother. Having run away from the caste, she uses her newfound freedom to go wherever the wind takes her. Her familiar is a silver pseudodragon named Polaris, after the North Star.

Raised as a princess, Celeste is formal and reserved. Raised as a neglected child, she’s grown a bit more flippant of the rules as she’s aged. She’s quiet and keeps to herself, preferring to watch rather than interact. Not one to sugarcoat things, she can come across as rude when she’s only being honest and/or speaking her mind. She is not a pushover and would rather do things her own way, though she’s not entirely unreasonable.

Quirks: Maintains eye contact sometimes to an uncomfortable degree, doesn’t like standing too close to others, straightens posture when she catches herself slouching Habits: Plays with her hair when nervous, typically doesn’t use contractions, covers mouth when smiling or laughing

Story.

Childhood

Being born with silver hair, Celeste was initially thought to be chosen by Selûne, Goddess of the Moon. This was further expanded on when she began showing signs of magic around eight years old; however, eventually it was discovered that she wasn’t a child of Selûne, but a sorcerer of draconic descent. Her parents’ attention quickly shifted towards Ciel, who had recently come into magic as well, due to the Mosala’s disdain for dragons. While Ciel became the center of their world as they traversed the path to becoming a cleric of Selûne, Celeste was not let off the hook. She was kept on a very short leash and taught to keep her magic (and, in her teen years on, her scales) a secret because her mother Kaya didn’t want Celeste’s ancestry spoiling the public perception of the Mosalas.

As the years passed, it was made abundantly clear that Ciel was Kaya’s favorite. Kaya was directly involved with Ciel’s magical and aristocratic classes, and the two were often seen together both in and out of the castle. No amount of Celeste trying to appease her mother seemed to have any effect, and eventually Celeste gave up, doing the bare minimum to comply with Kaya’s wishes school-wise and withdrawing further into herself. Kaya didn’t want this behavior rubbing off on Ciel, and so overloaded Ciel’s schedule in an attempt to separate the twins even further.

Ciel, unable to spend much time with their sister, was unaware exactly of how Celeste was being mistreated and how it was affecting her, and Celeste grew to resent Ciel as a result of Ciel’s perceived purposeful ignorance. On the rare occasion Ciel was able to meet up with Celeste, Celeste was cold and distant - which drove Ciel back to their mother as a source of comfort. Kaya’s plan had succeeded.

Present

Several years later, having finally had enough of the restricted freedom and the neglect she’d been dealing with for the majority of her life, Celeste breaks away from the castle after many moons spent planning her escape. There is no note nor any goodbyes, not even to Ciel. Celeste flees to Crescent Port under the cover of nightfall, guided by the full moon, and attempts to find passage out of Luneia.

Afraid the crews of the well-known merchant ships will recognize her, Celeste sneaks aboard a pirate ship, wary but desperate. Two days later, she is discovered by the captain, Avery Raval. She manages to conceal her true identity and offers to pay him to drop her off at whatever his destination is, which he accepts. With the world at her feet, Celeste intends to find out exactly what it has to offer her.

Trivia.

  • She has patches of silver scales on her body that she keeps hidden.
  • She wanted to be a bard as a child and is a self-taught violinist as a result.
  • Her chosen last name, Hiemal, is the Luneian surname given to bastard children.
  • There are always gems or crystals in her bag for Polaris to snack on.

Relationships.

Ciel, like Celeste, showed early signs of magical prowess and was quickly put on the path to become a cleric of Selûne. Where Celeste failed in her mother’s eye, Ciel thrived; their success resulted in their mother prioritizing Ciel and restricting their time with Celeste, causing the two to drift apart in their teenage years.

Ciel loves their twin without question; Celeste loves Ciel as well, though she is plagued by resentment over Ciel being Kaya’s favorite in their childhood. Still, Celeste knows she can count on Ciel, and vice versa - should the two ever unite against their mother’s leadership, the results could be catastrophic.

Avery was the first person outside of Luneia that Celeste came into real, extended contact with, and his first impression was less than satisfactory. It took some time for Celeste to become accustomed to his extroverted nature, but eventually she found herself comfortable in his presence.

The two get along well despite Avery’s loud enthusiasm occasionally grating on her nerves. Like two sides of the same coin, they balance each other; where Celeste can be impulsive, Avery waits to strike when the time is right. Avery is one of two people who Celeste is physically close with (the other being Ciel). They tend to keep their affection private for Celeste’s comfort.
