A demon killed Yume's family when they young. That demon took them and raised them for a few years in a very small village. It worked well because the demon looked very human and the village was small enough that it was easy to lie to the people living there. This demon built a reputation as someone who takes in kids without homes and often killed some to eat, then faking their deaths due to "illness." Yume later finds out about this and tries to run away, but the demon threatens to destroy the village if they ever make an attempt. Despite this, Yume ran and hid, asking for help from another villager who believed their story. They were going to help Yume leave during the next day, but that night the demon noticed Yume's bed was stuffed with pillows and went on their rampage killing everyone. The villager who was helping Yume quickly burried them in a spot in the garden where they bury compost to keep them safe. Demon slayers arrive too late, but are able to kill the demon. Yume is still stuck in the garden trying to scrape their way out. When the kakushi came the following day, one of them noticed weird noises coming from the ground and was able to dig Yume up. This kakushi took them in as his own and raised them.
