Bio:

Daughter to Yamashita Choja. Tora’s mother, Yashao prayed to the goddess Toraike Benzaiten to have a child until one night in a dream Toraike Benzaiten came to Yashao. The following morning she awoke to find a stone next to her. Believing it was a gift from the goddess Yashao prayed to the stone until she was blessed with a daughter.

Tora would grow up to be a courtesan and eventually the wife of Soga Sukenari after it was suggested he take one. The two fell in love almost instantly.

When Soga Sukenari was killed and his brother soon after. It is said that Toragaame is said to come from people who sympathize with Tora and the rain that fell on May 28 of the old lunar calendar. After the brothers' death, she visited their mother to morn them and became a nun.

She would eventually return to her home in Oiso-machi where she would build a hermitage and would there and pray for the souls of the brothers until her death.

The Torkoishi translated to little tiger stone is the stone that Yashao received from the goddess Toraike Benzaiten. As Tora Gozen grew so did the stone. One day an assassin was sent to kill Tora’s husband Soga Sukenari. When an arrow was shot at him it bounce off his body. When the assassin tried slashing him with a sword could not harm him. The assassin realize it was a stone that had disguised itself as Sukenari. The assassin fled but there is chips on the stone proving the attack happened. The stone is now enshrined at Endaiji.

The stone was not originally portrayed as yokai, this in fact came about later when Utagawa Yoshikazu portrayed it as a playful yokai with tiger legs and a tail. The stone itself was named after Tora Gozen.
