Chexz Jean Choquet is a 36-year-old artist who creates both poetry and paintings. At the beginning of his career, most of his work was for children, particularly his illustrations in picture books. After a crisis in his late twenties, he transformed his style entirely and began to write short, macabre stories. His second book was a great enough success that he was able to move out of his apartment to an old house in the woods. Within the first few weeks of his staying, he was witness to a series of bizarre incidents. The unexplainable moving of objects, seemingly random footsteps, and flickering lights were all occurrences that left Chexz with a dark but undeniable curiosity.
Then, one day, he had his first sighting of her: a glimpse of a woman in the mirror that had skin of swirling black smoke. That moment was when Chexz’s obsession begun. He couldn’t get his mind off of it, every drawing and every verse was about her. The dedication must have charmed her, because he suddenly found her standing at the foot of his bed. She crept forward and reached out to him while he lay paralyzed under the covers. White bursts of numbing, bleeding cold exploded before his eyes, his flesh beginning to melt from his fingers and pool around his shirt. It was as if the light was crawling into his very mind, curling up between the wrinkles to show him impossible colors beyond man’s witness. Reality pulled an eternity away until his brain was fraying and tearing around the edges of his conscience. And then… it stopped. He bored into the ceiling, returning its gaze. It whispered something he didn’t hear. He simply nodded, then closed his eyes.
