Zack is, at first glance, snobbish and unapproachable. However, underneath hides a sensitive soul who appreciates the beauty - and ugliness - in everything.
Most important to the family Cordel was always appearance & success. When he was young, Zack was a social, bright butterfly with straight A+s (and nothing less) in his classes. Tidy and kind with an eye for beauty and art. He had a lot of hobbie as well, including but not limited to art, fashion design, basketball, photography and Extremely religious household and a lot of pressure to do well. But other than that, he had a picture perfect family, and he wouldn't have given it up for anything.

Things changed when the fire nation attacked he was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy at age 6. That very same night, his parents concieved his soon to be little brother
Max and started treating Zack like the black sheep of the family.
Max would be the new golden child in line, getting everything Zack got before him and more. His room, his toys, their parents' affections, the pressure. Despite his best efforts to get his parents to believe in Zack once again, it was futile, and after years of his condition worsening, his hope started dwindling. He was neither becoming an artist like he wanted to, nor was he going to be of any importance to this family anymore. Instead, he became charge of all the household chores and babysitter for his little brother as a way of "repaying" his parents.
Soon enough, Zack's personality started changing into the complete opposite of his former shell - rebellious, cynical, morbid, depressed, with his sight getting worse every single day. There seemed to be no way out of his pitful situation, and his very own mind became too much for him to bear. His plan for his life was the following; to end it as soon as his sight disappears for good.
But things might change for the better still.
Zack's relationship to his brother is extremely strained. He has to constantly watch Max get whatever he wants, when he wants, while he's the one stuck cleaning after his little brother. He takes care of him regularly as their parents tend to be busy, but Max certainly doesn't make this a pleasurable experience for either of them. He is extremely envious of him. Still, he's his little brother... he can't hate him completely, and hopes he can grow up to be better than their parents ever were.
Zack started off hating West; he thought he was pretentious, full of himself and delusional. Their initial banter never went anywhere and was extremely childish. Zack had never wanted to get close to anyone ever again and West had wanted to 'circle the drain' as he usually did... but the difference between many of Zack's forecomers was that he didn't leave West when he got difficult to handle. He clung on. From then on, both of them regained a bit of hope for their lonely lives, and started to get closer to each other. Soon enough, Zack didn't want to die anymore. And that was pretty cool.
