Before Gumi reformed, he lived beneath the surface of Glavendale's local pond, which is huge and thriving with life. Little do the residents know that deep below, the walls of the pond expand, which has made room for many different species to live! In here, a few Azugan families set up their homes--one of which being Gumi's. Usually Azugans live out in the ocean, but these folk found a passageway into the cozy little pond, enjoying the secluded coziness. Gumi loved living here; the plants and animals were always blooming with life, and there was so many nooks and crannies to explore. However, this peace was eventually broken when other species--sirens and the like--wished to claim this territory. Fights and brawls broke out, and Gumi had been caught in the middle of one, becoming so badly injured that he reverted to his egg. (This is similar to gems getting 'poofed' in Steven Universe. Cringe! However, once they reform, they cannot recall anything from before they reverted. This can only happen at a young age.) Gumi's parents were distraught, searching for the boy everywhere, but to no avail. His egg floated up to the surface, some of the fish carrying it along, hoping to be found and saved by someone...

A war had been raging below the pond, and civilians had no idea. Gumi's egg bobbed on the water's surface as if beckoning to be picked up--which was noticed by a peculiar fellow named Mavie. Walking home from a lecture, he had originally picked up the egg out of curiosity, as he was relatively new to Glavendale at the time and wondered if this was some sort of strange native organism. He decided he'd bring it home and show it to his best friend, Anne, keeping it in a bowl of water. However, a few days after showing her (which gave Mavie no answers), Gumi reformed from the egg, looking quite close to how he did before he reverted. Of course, Mavie was in shock, immediately calling Anne over to help--there was a random kid in his house who couldn't even speak English! He tried his best to ask him about his parents or origins, but to no avail. He decided he'd take care of the kid for the time being--with the help of Anne's co-parenting, of course. The two raised Gumi together, teaching him how to speak and communicate. After a long while, Mavie realized he had completely forgotten about his original plan to return Gumi to his home. The kid still didn't know where he originally came from... but Mavie already felt as if he'd taken on a parental role for him. Gumi had become quite attached to him anyway... from then on, he adopted the Azuga, eventually enrolling him in school and furhter raising him.

Gumi still lives with Mavie and absolutely loves him, gardening and playing with him whenever he has the chance. He very much enjoys his time in Glavendale, exploring it with his best friends Vixen and Zoro as often as he can. He sees Anne as an auntie of some sort, and she still comes over quite often to spend time with him and Mavie. He has also adjusted well with Octavia--in fact, they get along very well! Both being sea creatures, the two sometimes enter the ocean, Octavia showing Gumi the vast life that resides beneath the waves. He has asjusted very well to his new life above the surface. Although, he does sometimes ponder about his true origins...
