"I'm afraid, I'm terrified, where have you been in my life?"

Cage's sort of 'parental figure' when his own aren't around. Meeting in high school, Cage and Trith grew close over their shared affinity for alternative music, thrill-seeking, and defying authority. When their dream to move into an apartment together in New York comes to fruition, the two engage in a rather hasty, erratic, and poorly naviated drug-fueled adolescent relationship. Cage, at 18 wanted to know everything that 21-year-old Trith had to offer. Cage relished hazy days of living vicariously doped up and nodding through the motions. Such erratic experiences were so new to Cage, though frankly, all old news to Trith. He had a pattern of being attracted to a particular type, those naive and beguiled by an exciting lifestyle. Their relationship ended in fumigating, angry, closure-less arguments that drove Cage to move back to his parent's house in New Jersey. Zoe subleased for Cage until Trith's unfortunate and sudden fatal overdose reverberated a silence so loud it was deafening. Zoe and Cage felt no need to confide in one another, the turbulent adolescent friendship died with his death.

Cage's relationship with Trith was one of the first real, most intensive, and formative relationships for Cage that he had engaged in during his teenage years. Feeling emotionally and sexually neglected, Cage's understanding of love had been completely warped from his early years only to lead to a vicious cycle of emotional abuse that would continue into his later relationships. Either abuse with Cage on the receiving end with minimal defense or understanding of how to cope, or from Cage with no insight into the gravity his words hold.

While Cage and Trith's relationship was brief at only a little less than a year, Cage finds himself tricking back to their hazy months together from time to time to analyze why he may react to circumstances in the way he does, why he's lacking in particular areas emotionally, or even at times, to mourn the loss of youth that had sizzled and dissipated slowly since the start of their relationship.
