-He's ignorant, a menace, doesn’t listen to anyone, and believes he’s in charge. 

-He wants to one day take over the body of Itadori Yuji and ingest everyone’s fears and make everyone experience their darkest fears

-Kitai, the big fox thing is a manifestation of Shem’s fears, anxieties, paranoias, phobias, etc.

- Kitai is incredibly strong (cuz Shem has a LOT of fear), 

-He feeds off of Shem’s and other people’s fears to get stronger.
-Shem is extremely weak mentally, physically, emotionally, and cursingly (ᴵᶠ ʸᵃ ᵏⁿᵒʷ, ʸᵃ ᵏⁿᵒʷ) so he gets WaY too scared WaY too easily at times, thus feeding Kitai a LOT of fear...
-Soo Kitai, at these times, can get so strong that he can separate himself from Shem and wreak havoc.
-He can also possess Shem’s body and go buck Wild... not a fun sight...

Note: Within this possessed state- Kitai can currently only summon his kitsune hands; Kitai cannot use PHANTASM CHASM cuz Shem is automatically repelled from the domain-so this would lead to Kitai being rejected by his own domain.

PHANTASM CHASM: This is the name of Kitai’s domain. Once in the domain, Kitai will make that person experience their truest, worstest, darkest, deepest, most traumatizing fears and he feeds off of it. He makes fear to use fear, basically and when he's had enough or drains them of all their fear, he kills them. 

Note: His domain repels non-targets. [including Shem] He can only do this to one person at a time.

It is believed Shem's negative emotions and feelings took such a strong hold of him- that cursed energy formed and Kitai grew from it.

Shem was often bullied, manipulated, and basically seen as a doormat, often letting others use him, step over him, and just be a personal punching bag. 

And one day..he just couldn't handle it anymore, and right in front of his bullies, Kitai appeared and.., let's just say.. they know to not bully him again

-Shem started seeing curses around him.. and he didn't know what to do, especially about Kitai- so when he heard of Jujutsu Tech- he figured he can use Kitai for the sake of others and help out

Also there is a possibility- if you can tell with Shem's right eye- the more and more Kitai possesses Shem- there is a chance that Kitai can permanently take over Shem's body and soul completely and "Shem" will "disappear" but the problem with that is- Shem's body alone most likely will not be able to support or host a curse due to being so weak and he might die and with that Kitai might die too.
