Artemis; Goddess of Animals, the Hunt, Vegetation and Childbirth; was away when one of her Nymphs gave birth to a child, fathered by a human Hero. Without her help, the Nymph died from the already complicated childbirth; Artemis, overcame with guilt, decided that she and her Nymphs would raise the child: and hence Mortimer, or "Artie" as the Nymphs lovingly called him, would live amongst them until he could decide his own fate.

Despite being half-human, Artie lived much of his life as a Nymph; to protect him, Artemis bestowed a curse upon him so that he was to be perceived as a woman except by her and her Nymphs until he came of age. Though Artemis initially planned to fully transform him into a Nymph when he was old enough, the pantheon was falling apart; when this occured, Artemis removed Artie's curse, granted him her powers, and he left the waters to take on the rest of the Olympians.

Artie is olive-skinned, burned by the sun and heavily freckled; his curly hair has a constant half-wet look to it.
