Once Lenox died, he was initially sent to Heaven due to the drastic measures he went to for religion before his death. However, it was ultimately decided by higher powers that he would not be permitted into heaven due to the sinister acts that took place at the hands of Mr. Capgras. Hence, he was shot down to Hell and was deemed as a hazard as higherup policies do not permit a soul to share any aspects of what the "other side" is like. Thus, he was put in his own personal pocket void to prevent him from interacting with any other souls.
Within this purgatory, he begins to lose his sense of self and identity. Having been incredibly unstable before dying, this instability followed through to the afterlife. He became manic and deranged, and eventually the supernatural environment began to change him. His skin would begin to melt, as remnant of how his death went - through means of burning. All that remained of his body was impenetrably dark goop and remnant of the figure that was once there. At this point, his current state was neither angel nor devil, and he had become what one could only describe as an anomaly. Despite his appearance, he was still the same, broken person beneath the liquid state on the surface - and this change only made him more ravenous - ravenous for freedom from himself and his state. He would constantly bang at the surfaces of his enclosure and throw himself at the walls with his goal being that he would eventually weaken the shield - and this is exactly what he did.
He managed to shatter his senses through means of shattering the cage that kept him confined. His escape was anything but pretty, as once he was finally free, he had began falling through the cracks and flaws with the environment around him. "Dangers" like him were not expected by higher powers to do much with their souls, and the environment around their confinements was a clear reflection of that. Hence, he continued to fall until he eventually reached a changing point.
The new environment Lenox found himself in was rather familiar, yet unfamiliar at the same time. As he fell, the excess goop that rested upon his skin began to clear, revealing his new, fallen state. He was now covered in bandages and equipped with a new pair of wings. Unfortunately for Lenox, the awe that came with his new form also came with instability - and he didn't know how to work his wings. He hit the Earth with a crash, and ended up falling into a forest on Earth. However, Lenox soon realized that this forest had appeared far too healthy to have been from his time period. He had been shot back to the past.
After getting up on his feet and getting the hang of his new form, he realizes that all of his items he had on him at his time of death were still with him - new and unharmed. He gathers his few belongings, consisting of his high-tech microcomputer and his mobile device, and begins to wander the forest. This is where he encounters a pink-haired boy wandering the same grounds. Lenox meets Vy, and the two begin to grow close. Vy is entranced by Lenox's technology, and Lenox shows him a thing or two.
After getting to know each other, Vy jokingly comes up with the idea to create a murder robot. Lenox decides it'd be fun to entertain his silly idea, and begins to develop Ribbit. Upon creating the robot, Lenox begins to get attatched to the idea and starts taking it a bit more seriously - equipping it with powerful weapons and giving it high levels of knowledge. Thus, Ribbit was created.
Not long after Ribbit's final touches, the three become very close. Ribbit, being artificial intelligence, learns to share aspects of both Vy and Lenox, and develops a sense of humor and entertainment similar to theirs. This sense of entertainment sparks an idea in their heads - a place for them all to perform to their hearts' desires. A place for them to get a kick out of watching others walk into a trap they made and curated. Thus, Freakshow was born.
