Mute has been non-verbal since he came into existence, hence the name, given by his parents. It was intended as derogatory but the umi accepted it as his own. He was quite isolated from others, but it never bothered him. He'd much rather collect tadpoles and play in the dirt. Mute is cheerful, insults run off him like water to a duck's back. He finds appreciation in everything, having a concept but not a care for conventional value. He does what makes him happy and comfortable, any conflicting views mean nothing to him.

Sometimes he may squeak, hum, or make the occasional noise with his mouth, but words are often held back for emergencies or when he feels comfortable enough to say a few words, mostly "I love you." to his companions. They already know though :)
