Background
Scarlow did not always serve on Gallobrin Island under the watchful eye of The Inkeeper. Though he does not remember, he once had a mother and father that were determined to provide for him--even if the only way they could was by giving him up. Scarlow's memories begin in the guild he was entrusted to at three years old, which appeared and functioned as a forge to the outside world but was, on the inside, a house of mercenaries. While young, Scarlow's duties were initially inconsequential. He would fetch supplies and equipment, help with cooking, and run errands for the mercenaries in the guild. As he grew older, however, it was apparent that Scarlow was not meant for the work of a mercenary. He was too tenderhearted to engage in regular violence, a fact that was made clear by how seamlessly his more stoic sister adapted to the environment. Because of his incompatibility with the trade, the mercenaries were quick to accept when an unfamiliar man showed interest in him and offered a reasonable sum. This man, as it turned out, was the owner of Gallobrin Island, and he was looking for his next apprentice. Scarlow was malleable and impressionable--something that the master of the island looked for in all of his staff, but especially his apprentices. |
