4977 is an ancient esk, from the late Cretaceous, some 75 million years ago, when a great sea split North America in two. A young Archelon, she narrowly escaped death from one of the seaway's many predators, but was mortally wounded. Subsequently transformed by Tul, 4977 kept a youthful energy about her for millions of years, as, slowly, the world changed around her. The other Archelons of the seaway went extinct, leaving along with the rest of the sea and its inhabitants.

Stranded outside of the marine biome, a remnant of a bygone time, and weighed down by the years, he sought a retransformation in the plains biome to reflect his new boundary, his grief, his age. With his tether to the earth severed, however, he wanders wherever he will, drifting like the continents. 4977 no longer transforms other beings into esk, after experiencing the effects of millions of years of existence, but he is sympathetic to esk seeking retransformation.

In its previous esk form, 4977 was small and turtle-like, easily cupped in one's hands (if only your hands had existed 75 million years ago). Limestone encased and obscured most of its body. After retransformation, 4977 finally attained enormity like it would have had it survived to adulthood, now dozens of feet tall, with great sweeping fins, extra legs often held up to its chest, and floating bluestem seeds around its neck.
