Finley is a Pokemon Zoologist from the Johto region. They grew up in Cianwood City with their father, who runs the Cianwood City Pharmacy. Their mother is a stewardess on the S.S. Anne. They've published a number of their studies in scientific journals.
Cianwood City is small and somewhat separated from the rest of Johto, as only small boats can access it due to the abundance of large rocks around the nearby Whirl Islands, thus Finley was rather isolated growing up. They didn't get along with the other children in the town and was routinely picked on by them. Finley was home-schooled by their father whenever he wasn't working at the pharmacy. As Finley got a bit older, they started helping with basic tasks around the pharmacy, which sometimes included keeping injured Pokemon company.
During a stroll, Finley encountered a Cyndaquil, who followed them back to Cianwood and started trying to play with Finley. They quickly befriended the small Pokemon, and their father gave them permission to catch it, finally giving them their own Pokemon. This Cyndaquil, named Captain, would become Finley's main partner Pokemon.
They worked at the Safari Zone until they were 19, to which they set out on their own adventure to conduct their own independent research.
