BEGINNING

Coyotes' birth parents were two minor noble humans of a smaller town/village, Thanes to be exact. The town was located somewhere near the High Forest. Coyote, and their twin, were born sometime in the October/November months. The two of them not being human when born came as a great surprise to everyone. And an unwelcome one at that. The best actual explanation for Coyote and their twin was that it was some form of awakened genes. Similar I would say to the birth of tieflings and aasimars and such but in this case a shifter. Maybe at some point in her youth Coyotes’ mother had an interaction with a shifter. I’m not sure. The general consensus however was that it was some sort of curse placed upon them. Coyotes’ father was not too pleased with Coyote, however. Instead of having a normal human child he had… this, and he ended up having to be physically restrained by the doctor upon seeing Coyote when let into the room for the first time (which had been several days after the birth itself).

His wife and the mother of Coyote, rightly fearing for the life of her child and herself fled with the help of the other midwife, managing to slip by her now enraged husband. She ended up running off into the night, during the dead of winter. As she ran into the woods, light snow now beginning to fall, her husband called curses after her. She ended up wandering into the forests, quickly becoming lost and the snow growing heavier. She herself was still extremely weak from the birth of her children and she was quite exhausted at this point. The weather only grew worse the deeper she wandered in the woods. Her children were quite upset at this point too, though she was doing her best to keep them warm. Eventually she ended up collapsing into a snowdrift, holding her children close to her to keep them warm. Their survival is far more important than her own. Even if the likelihood of them surviving was thin at this point anyway. It was here where she eventually passed. The two babies crying loudly into the night. Eventually even those cries started to fade. One of them with nothing but a whimper and the other one completely silent.

It was here that a figure showed up, a druid. Having heard the cries of the children they went to investigate what it was. As babies crying in the dead of night during a snowstorm is rather unusual. The druid saw the body of the mother and the two children in her arms. The mother had died hours ago and now quite cold. One child was still squirming weakly in her arms whimpering and the other was still, having died from exposure not more than half an hour to an hour ago. The druid, for reasons unknown, decided to take the two babies up and bring them back to their shelter. Perhaps it had something to do with their unusual nature, being shifters, who knows. Either way, the dark druid ended up rescuing them. After making sure the first still living child was taken care of the druid then turned to the dead child. Which they then, through some sort of dark magical drudidc ritual, ended up bringing the child back to life. Though left with a terrible scar on the face. The resurrected child he decided to call Coyote Who Returned From Death, or just Coyote for short. Combination of the child's shifter traits resembling that of a wolf/coyote and also, because, well, they had returned from death. The other child, the druid decided to dub Fox Who Endures Harshness. Because their shifter features resembled that of a fox and because they had managed to survive despite the harsh conditions.

After the fact the druid, having recognized the mother as a resident of the nearby town and wife to the local thane, was quite upset. This Thane had already received many warnings by the druid for his disrespect to the natural world and insistence on expansion. So finding the two shifter children and their mother, having been driven out by the local lord, was the last straw for the druid. And so, once the druid had made sure the two children weren’t dead/on death's door, went out in the dead of night to the manor of the Thane and laid down retribution. Suffice it to say no one was left alive in the manor after the fact and nobody in the town can agree on what happened. Except that the lord seemed to have angered the wrong person this time around.

MIDDLE

For the next few years, the dark druid raised the two children. It wasn’t exactly the best life for toddlers but, you know, they were alive. At around the age of 3 Coyote and Fox ended up being separated. I’m not sure about the situation surrounding it, maybe the two had been chased by hunters. Either way they ended up separated and the status of whether Fox is alive or dead is unknown to Coyote, they only even just vaguely remember Fox anyway. And their Mentor wasn’t exactly the most compassionate when it happened either.

The next decade or decade and a half was Coyote being raised in the backwoods by their Mentor, who they only know as Mentor, far away from any civilization or other people of any sort. It wasn’t exactly the brightest or best upbringing. Mentor being a dark druid and all meant Coyote ended up partaking in a lot of the sort of stuff you would think of when imaging dark druidic rituals, dark magic, witchcraft, all that stuff. And their Mentor, again, was not the most caring, compassionate, or affectionate of people. But they kept Coyote alive and taught them what they deemed fit/knew. From dark magics to combat wildshape and more. And it’s not like Coyote knows anything else so to them this is perfectly normal and right. They were never taught how to read anything beyond Druidic runes, because, like, why would they need to know that anyway? It’s suspect that Mentor even knew how to read anything past druidic runes in the first place. So that was life for the most part for Coyote.

Not long before my entry into the campaign Coyotes mentor ended up disappearing one-day with no word or warning. Now, Mentor vanishing for days or weeks at a time wasn’t necessarily unusual at this point in Coyote's life. Now being old enough to take care of themselves without dying. The first time it started happening was probably around when Coyote was around 5 or 4 and then as they got older it would be for longer periods of time. But typically there would be some sign or warning of it happening. This time around it was just nothing. One day Mentor was there the next nothing. Coyote, confused, decided that maybe he had just forgotten this time around. Though unlikely as Mentor had the memory of an elephant. After a couple of weeks of waiting, and several wide searches of the forest, there was still nothing.

Several days before their Mentor vanished Coyote had actually started having dreams/visions. All of them were very confusing and all of them quite dark and foreboding. Coyote couldn’t quite make out what they were about but they seemed to be about something bad happening in the future. When their mentor vanished they only began to get worse and worse. Eventually, near the start of the third week when Mentor had vanished, Coyote experienced on right in the middle of the day. While wide awake. And it was the worst, and most confusing, one yet. Coyote still had no idea what they could mean but at this point they figured that the vanishing of their mentor and these dreams had to be connected somehow. And so they decided to leave in search of answers and to hopefully find out where their mentor was/what happened to them. Eventually all the previously discussed stuff with the DM happened and they made it to Goldenfield and joined up with the party.
