Summary

Liz was born to parents living in a small town at the edge of civilization who died during a military takeover when she was still a baby. She was later found by a seamstress, who decided to adopt her as her own. She was named after the woman's grandmother, and spent her childhood learning the trade of sewing and basic mercantilism. Her adoptive mom died when she was around 7 years old, and she was put on a ship to be dropped off at an orphanage. Some very strange circumstances happened when out at sea, and she ended up being the only survivor on that ship of children and sailors. She was found trying to swim back to shore by some pirates, and they collectively raised her as the crew's daughter. For years, she was trained for the life of a pirate, and turned out to be a very skilled helmsman. She also picked up on sword skills quick, though found guns not as appealing. So she learned ways to turn a gun fight into a close combat situation, and this roundabout way of training helped her become a quick-witted strategist.

When Liz had become a teenager, another strange encounter left her home ship split in half, and the lives of the crew became a mystery. She had managed to reach shore again, and found the constant upsets in her life to be alarming and suspicious. Sure, most everyone she had met went through many terrible situations in their life, but as a young girl she felt especially unlucky. And the possibly supernatural things she had seen made her all the more confused. Liz decided to go searching for answers, and on this journey, encountered a skilled witch. She explained her situation to the old woman, and managed to persuade her into teaching her dark magic. Though she generally doesn't use these skills now, sometimes using her knowledge made her feel safer and less like a threat to any companions.

After feeling like she could finally keep away bad luck and unexpected events, she left the tutelage of the witch and went back to working as a pirate. It was fairly hard to find a crew to work with, as most pirates had a superstition that women brought bad luck on ships. For a while, she made her money by dueling and betting on herself, and had gotten by well enough thus far. Not many people liked losing to a woman, though, and it was getting harder to keep it up as time went on. That's when she came across her current crew.
