About

30292620_3ORoa6NSXQQCt0c.png

The higher they fly, the harder they fall. Keno was at the top of his game and spent most of his time gambling and playing games for large sums of money. He eventually tried his luck at the wrong casino and ended up in a game that was rigged from the start. He lost everything, including his own freedom. He's indebted to the casino and its owner and now works to pay off his eternal debt.

Keno is both charismatic and sneaky. He's far more intelligent and observant than others often give him credit for, which was how the bird managed to sweep the tables in the first place. He now gathers information for his new boss as well as runs tables for others rather than playing at them himself.

Story

Browlet

Keno was raised in a rather poor family unit. Food and proper education was a bit difficult for the group to come by and so most of the members began working as soon as they were able to support the flock. This left very little time to look after the younger browlets of the group, which opened the door for them to get into far too much trouble. Keno was no exception and took to the streets at a rather tender age. Nothing too dangerous ever happened to him at that age, as locals did tend to look out for one another when it mattered, but there were plenty of negative influences.

Fledgling

The longer Keno lingered around the streets the quicker he picked up on some of the fun ways others killed time. Between demonstrating a little cutpurse action, he also learned how to gamble in the alleys. It was from that moment on he learned he was a natural at it. Good fortune seemed to gravitate towards him, though he could never place how or why. Considering his lot in life he previously thought he was likely one of the most unlucky bloke's on the planet. His victories in gambling had him climbing up and up to different tables and circles of betting. Everyone wanted to test their own luck against the unassuming bird with a wide smile. There were times he lost, but more often than not his luck and judgment of the different games had him coming out on top. This did not go unnoticed however.

Young Adult | Current

As a young adult Keno got his horns carved as a sign of his good fortune. Everyone around the area knew who Lady Luck smooched on the cheek and the bird had grown quite an ego from it. By gambling he was able to support his family much more efficiently than if he'd just gotten an average job, so what could go wrong?
Keno eventually decided to take a trip from the city-spanning planet he called home to try for the big wins on the casino satellite that circled the overhead. The strip was something you had to battle your way into, get invited to via status or have enough money to buy in. Luckily for him he had proven himself and had been able to fight for a spot at the tables and for a chance at the glory. THAT'S where the big money was, and he was coming for it.
When Keno arrived he went straight for the top and played in the most infamous casino, the one that the owner of the entertainment satellite happened to also own. Crescenzo's personal casino was a make or break sort of situation. Within the first few moments of stepping into the place Keno witnessed several individuals thrown out for losing everything or for card counting. He swallowed his nerves, found a table and played for the entire weekend.
He'd gathered quite a crowd around him by the time he was ready to cash out his earnings. Crescenzo's personal right hand man, Virgil, even met with the bird to make sure everything was accounted for. This wasn't an issue in the start, big wins meant more idiots would try their luck and recreate the streak. The problem was when Keno kept returning.
At least once a week the Browbird returned, looking a bit more like he fit the scene with each visit. His clothing had gotten fancier and his horns sparkled to show off his pride. This time, however, things went different. Crescenzo, sick of cashing out to the little cretin, rigged the game. Keno lost, and he lost hard. Somewhere in his gut he knew that things had gone horribly wrong, but what could he do? Trying to run for it would have ended in him being killed. He swallowed down the lump in his throat at his newly acquired debt.
So he did the only thing he could do; he sold his soul to the crime lord.

Aspects

  • Arcane: It's not uncommon to see him fiddling with dice or cards; having them shuffle behind him or roll along on their own for a lack of better things to do. One of his more iconic demonstrations of his magic is how he creates patterns and shapes in the smoke of his cigars. It's something attributed to him and a bit of a calling card to see a smudged out cigar or cigarette somewhere with a red aura still lingering around it.
  • Speech: Keno is the sort to never admit to having the speech aspect. Clearly it's his own wit and silver tongue that are so convincing, alluring and seeming to garner him more luck on top of his unnatural gift! But no, not really. His enchanted words are the way they are due to his magic! It doesn't always work, of course. It really depends how on how much thought Keno is putting into what he's saying. If he's caught off guard he's quick to his feet, sure, but he still stumbles. Something rehearsed is going to go a lot better for him! He's quite the little deceiver though.
  • Luck (UNOFFICIAL): One day he'll get luck, once available in game. :( But (unofficially) it's the reason for his win streaks and good fortune.
  • Synchrony: Keno is a bit of a show off with his aspects. He isn't the best at it due to never being educated past the basics, but that doesn't stop him from trying to strut everything he has! He typically uses his aspects to perform tricks for people. He enjoys magic and simple hand tricks the most, the suspension of disbelief is half what he built himself on so it hits close to home.

Trivia

8297260_kgkKbCsoLrkIQ83.png?1547512698
  • When he's off the clock he usually tries to sneak over to the tables to play a few rounds of cards. He saves his earnings from these games to hopefully buy out his freedom one day.
  • Keno goes through harrowing amounts of shampoo in a month. He's very vain and has a lot of fur to upkeep! His appearance is important to him and one of the few things he has control over after becoming Crescenzo's errand boy.
  • He has tried to escape the casino and his sentence a few times, but each time is either apprehended or comes back on his own accord. He doesn't know where he'd go or what he'd do which has stopped him from leaving completely. He's extremely conflicted on the entire situation.
  • Keno is skilled with making counterfeit documents, which he sells at a premium under his boss's nose as another means of stockpiling money.
  • He has several odd jobs he does for Crescenzo. He gathers information for his boss since he's so unassuming, works as a glorified errand boy when necessary and also runs the card tables (if he's earned it). He also, very rarely, sometimes helps in deals with other crime lords.

Crescenzo [ Boss ]

Crescenzo owns the casino that Keno lost everything at after he rigged the tables. The two don't often see eye to eye, but Keno lacks the power to do anything about their common disagreements. Crescenzo is quite comfortable with flaunting Keno's indentured servitude over his head to keep him humbled and obedient. Crescenzo is, however, extremely invested in the behind-the-scenes crush that Virgil and Keno seem to have on one another.

Virgil [ Crush ]

Virgil and Keno have a complicated relationship. Virgil is someone who has zero issues with stepping on the smaller bird to keep him in line, but he also keeps a close eye on him to make sure he's taken care of and safe. Keno early on thought the hiros as nothing but sadistic and cruel, but his opinion quickly rebuilt itself as Virgil opened up to him over time. The two have a crush on one another but are awful at expressing their own emotions or admitting to anything. Plus they need to keep it professional!

Calloway [ Co-Worker ]

Keno is creeped out by Calloway, the resident undead lawyer. He's not fun to talk to and he quite often reminds Keno of the binding contract held over his head to keep his ass in line. He always seems to be pissed off at something and while Keno isn't above communicating in an "outdoor voice" he's pretty sure the zombie can yell louder than he can.

Sullivan [ Co-Worker ]

Sully is someome that Keno mutually gets along with. The old con artist turned bouncer is more friendly than anyone else on Crescenzo's payroll and he actually likes to play a game of cards here and there! He might tell stupid jokes, but they get Keno laughing.
