Bekhen

'Bekhen' is pronounced 'bek-hn' like the word 'beckon' which basically means 'to summon'. There is a lot of potential with this character, although my eyes view Bekhen as symbolically feminine; for the sake of convenience, 'she' is a Hand of Death: physical entities that are not strictly bound to the physical world and contribute to degradation in unique ways, inspired by the idea of the Horsemen of the Apocalypse; It is my intention for the word 'beckon' to reflect her personality, like the face behind the mask in a mirror. In other words, do not hesitate to make her fit well into your own world.

  • DESIGN NOTES:
  • She is alike an old-world vulture in that she relies on sight to search; she has no sense of touch, no sense of smell, far-reaching and exceptional eyesight but no sight of colour, can only taste bitterness to varying strength, and very far-reaching but often vague hearing.
  • Her arms are inspired by a mantis and her tail is, too. But also acts as a gladius that is sheathed in this design.
  • her overall design is inspired by a vulture but the spikes on its skull are like the feathers on its wings: shriveled, oily, and dreadlocked feathers.
This is my first ever drawing of the character and it's my intention to expand on its anatomy, for I do not like the lack of shoulders, rib cage, wings, feet, or posture. This is simply a basic first draft of a concept, plus I'm a fairly incompetent sketch-a!

INTRODUCTION TO PERSONALITY

A soul constricted of life from the very passion that was its sustenance.

Bekhen is cold, like her home. Half-buried under snow and ice, warmth is an impossibility here. Each day, in her wake, she claws and chews out from under her icy blankets. That is when you hear the screeches known to a vulture echo throughout this frozen wasteland. The few that live here tend to avoid the daylight because of it. If she leaves, on a rare command that is, hollow sockets of eyes sometimes drop tears down still icy bone from the melting snow that collected in them overnight. She'll fly high and simply watch for a while. This has been her duty since the first life that grew and she's no longer what she was...Maybe one day she'll fly out into the night, toward those sources of light?

I have taken inspiration from Ancient Egyptian and San mythology: Nekhbet is a goddess who would give royal wives who wore a 'vulture crown' protection and was depicted as a vulture, an animal that was believed to convert the dead into the living and hatch from eggs without any male intervention; and Kaggen is a kind of trickster God who was depicted as the mantis in the San myth but could take the shape of another animal.
