Chihaya Ukemochi

Chihaya Ukemochi (沢渡冬子 Ukemochi Chihaya) is a supporting character in the Jujutsu Kaisen series. She is a third-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High School and is a grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer. She also has distant family ties to both the Kamo and Zenin clans. In her free time she loves playing card and board games. Has a secret collection of pokemon and digimon cards.

Abilities & Powers

• Innate Technique – Hairnet (髪網 Kamiami): Chihaya can create portals between sections of her hair, allowing her to “store” anything in this pocket dimension-like space. Objects that have been stored within her hair can then summoned at any time, and are under her control due to strands of hair attached to the object like puppet strings. These strands of hair are extremely thin and nearly invisible, and are reinforced with cursed energy to allow them to change length at will and resist being cut by normal means. Chihaya mainly uses her technique to capture strong cursed spirits that she can then control in battle against other opponents. She is known to currently have 1 special-grade Imaginary Vengeful Cursed Spirit, 6 grade 1 curses, 10 grade 2 curses, 7 grade 3 curses, and 22 grade 4 curses. 
  • Chihaya can summon and control several cursed spirits at a time, though higher-grade spirits drain more cursed energy.
  • This technique is functionally similar to Cursed Spirit Manipulation, but is not viewed as dangerous by the jujutsu higher-ups as it lacks the potential to combine cursed spirits together or extract and obtain cursed spirits’ techniques. It is also different in that she can control people or inanimate objects, and is not limited to just cursed spirits.

Trivia

• The name Chihaya means “thousand” (chi, 千) and “already, now, fast, early” (haya, 早). Her surname comes from Old Japanese, perhaps from 食 (uke, “food”) and‎ 持ち (mochi, “holding; keeping; possessing”). The kanji spelling literally means “to keep food.” It is also the name of a goddess of food in the Shinto religion.
