They're a demigod who is the child of the late god of beauty/elegance: Benzai.
However, Never exactly fit in with the gods because they didn't have the great power passed down to them. The best they could do was bestow boons on people that could be stacked over time.
They were more human than anything and the gods uhh pitied them. Humans knew Sagami wasn't human, and was the child of Benzai, so they were put on a pedestal. Sagami is really bitter that their parent passed on ashamed they just were not powerful enough and getting shallow reassurance from the other gods that they'll be just as great didn't help.
So they cut themselves off from the gods and went to live on with humans.
They tattooed warriors and normal people alike. Those who wanted to immortalize memories of their strength or to etch wishes unto their skin. Sagami was there to help elevate people to live their best lives and to hope they break away from the light of the gods. Make them a little stronger with their boons. These would be permanent. People would fondly remember the ink on their skin. And that made Sagami feel fulfilled. They know they will never be great, but fuck all that noise. They'll keep fucking fighting to be able to share and exert their power.
Unlike other gods, they intimately listen to the wishes of the people.
They also hate Yae Miko and she refuses to deal with them after they actually did cause harm to her by pushing them too far.
