Niou is Kitsune Saiguu's kid. He SHOULD have been a Daiyouko because he was born with a LOT of power and he always made mom proud. But during the Cataclysm, his mama wanted to spare his life, but she disintegrated while trying to contain the corruption. Niou ran to his mom to help her. He watched her die before he himself also succumbed to the filth and died as well.
He was reconstructed after the Sacred Sakura's roots were cleansed, and Kazari shed tears upon seeing him whole again. She gave him one last kiss on the forehead before she passed on, just happy to see her sweet boy just one last time.
However, not all of him was intact. He lost all his memories and only was told his name was Hakushin Niou when Yae saw him again. She was literally in a lot of shock honestly.
As much of a trickster she is, she wanted to spare Niou's feelings by not unlocking his memories and making him a little errand boy to rediscover present day Inazuma. Even though it shouldn't be her say in what happens to him about his memories, she reasons it as "Why would you want someone you love to relive what gave them pain?"
Niou was 18 - 19 when he died, so in human and Kitsune years, he was very young.
So Niou's story quest is retracing what happened at the Sakura Cleansing quest to try and regain his memories because he doesn't even know who he is and the weight his name carries. To no avail. Muscle memory is still there but it sucks because... He knows this was important. He knows he can always make new memories, but how can he do that when he doesn't even know nor remember who he is and why he's so important.
