Thaumus [BAGBEAN]
CorvusDetritus
Profile
Prince of the Ocean, Not Fit to be King.
"Patience may be a virtue, dear, but it is not one of mine,"
Thaumus is a fairly enigmatic and playful bean. He embodies the free spirit of the oceans where he resides and is not often seen in the same place twice, at least outside of the island he calls home. Tom is an immortal deity meant to rule and protect the deep ocean and the creatures that inhabit it, though much of his job nowadays is done by his younger brother Glaucus. Despite being born with such a heavy responsibility, he does his best to shirk his work onto others in order to explore his true passion of travel. He hates being expected to do things and for much of his immortal life he remained a lone wolf, priding himself in his independence and lavishing in his life of freedom that other folk could only dream of. More recently, however, he has accepted one responsibility into his life in the form of his son Palaemon, whom, despite his typically childish and frivolous attitude, Tom has done his best to raise and protect. For thirteen years since Pal was born, Tom has traveled much less than before in order to keep Pal safe on their home island, sheltering the boy from all the dangers of the world. Tom still longs for adventure but fears that harm may come to Pal if he leaves his side.
Despite his flirtatious and charming demeanor, Thaumus has very few personal connections and a heightened distrust of mortals. He may look calm and collected but is very paranoid on the inside, always worrying about who or what may be out there to hurt him or his family. Deities don’t have the best reputation nowadays and mortals can be quite dangerous and crafty if faced with the chance to kill a god. However, Tom does very much enjoy positive attention, all gods love to feel worshiped, so during his travels very frequently appeared in areas of high traffic and places he may get compliments, like bars and parties, disguised as a mortal.
Despite his many years on the planet, Tom only ever fell in love once. Despite his instincts he let his guard down and formed a romantic relationship with a mortal bean, the other father of his son Palaemon. Thaumus never revealed his true identity to the bean but always felt guilt for hiding secrets, never being able to be truly himself despite wanting to. Instead of spilling the beans about who he was and how their son would be a demigod, he fled with Palaemon’s love box and for thirteen years pined for someone he believed he could never be with.
Nowadays Tom splits custody of Palaemon with Harris as they slowly rebuild their relationship.

Extra Info
Childhood
Thaumus was born from the sea and created to be the first of its three protectors, the deity of the raging sea. Despite this, he has always rejected his role in favor of living freely and only for himself. He was “Born” with the mentality of a 30-40 year old and retains that mental maturity to this day. Due to this, he was never a child but still occasionally refers to his youth as his “childhood”.
Tom started out with a love for the world, including the mortal folk that graced its surface, but over time his relationship to mortals became poisoned. Though he was too young to remember the days when gods were worshiped, he knew it had left many modern mortal civilizations with a bitter taste in their mouths and this became clear to him soon after he started existing. For the first few decades of his life, he appeared to mortals as his true self, a charming sea god, but that only garnered him bitterness, jealousy, and fear from those who believed and disdain and disapproval from those who did not. He did not like to feel judged and he did not enjoy the negative attention he was given and so he decided to not frequent mortal civilisations and to only do so disguised as a mortal himself. This proved a smart decision as, soon after, there rose a group of god killers who sniffed out and snuffed out the divine, believing the world to belong to mortals and for gods to not have a place in it. Hearing stories of his peers and deities he looked up to being hunted and harmed, Tom did his best to hide himself away, though could not resist the occasional appearance as a mortal as he loved the attention and praise his beautiful form received.
Past
During one of his expeditions on land, Thaumus met Harris while posing as a snake oil salesman and was immediately enamored by the bean’s stern attitude and strict view on life. Tom doesn’t quite know what drew him to such a brooding fellow but felt the urge to introduce Harris to life’s pleasures and Thaumus’ easy going lifestyle. At first it was a bit of fun, finding ways to annoy the folk while trying to introduce fun into his life, but after a while he began to feel a foreign attachment to Harris, especially as the other bean seemed to become less and less annoyed by Tom’s constant prodding, and, despite his instincts, Thaumus began to see Harris as a friend.
It was the longest Thaumus had ever stayed in one place, being somehow unwilling to leave Harris’ side, and for three years he built himself a fake life with Harris, their unusual friendship becoming something more serious. Both fellows were very romantically awkward, neither having never felt this sort of love and attraction for another person before, but did their best to navigate their relationship in a respectful and healthy way. Despite Tom feeling warm and trusting around Harris, he was never able to chalk up the courage to reveal his true identity, that of being an immortal ocean god, and always felt guilty about it. Harris could tell something was being hidden from him and occasionally asked Tom about it, as the deity rarely spoke of his past, true or fabricated, but assumed there was something there too painful to speak of. Truthfully, Tom feared every day that the god killers would find him, as recently news of them was spreading and their numbers were growing, and he so cherished his new life, his new friends, and his new lover.
In the midst of their relationship, the couple was surprised by a love box and they decided to nurture it, unwilling to deny the chance to become parents. Both were overjoyed and Tom finally felt comfortable in his new life, looking forward to the future of his little family, that is until news of the god killers got too close to home. Tom knew that if the god killers found him they would slaughter him and the ones he loved so dearly, including his unborn child, and so he decided to flee without a word, taking the box with him.
Current Life
After raising his son Palaemon in solitude for thirteen years, the god killers were becoming closer and closer to finding their home and Tom was tired and weary of living for the last decade in fear and stress. He decided, after much thought, to deliver his son back to Harris, whom he had not seen since leaving. The demigod would be safer amongst mortals and harder to find, especially without his deity father around, since the god killers did not know of Pal’s existence yet. Also, after so many years, his heart yearned to see Harris again. Tom revealed his true identity to the bean while giving him custody of Palaemon, which the bean did not take well. However, Harris accepted responsibility for Pal, much to Tom’s relief.
Thaumus has returned to his nomadic lifestyle, leading the god killers away from his son, but does his best to visit when it is safe to do so, in order to make sure his son is safe and secretly in hopes of somehow rekindling what he once had with Harris. He is still in love with the bean, despite how long it has been, but knows his betrayal cannot be healed easily. He deeply loves his son and, even if he can never be with Harris again, is proud of how much the young tox has grown and learned under Harris’ care so far.
Tom dreams of the day he may return to his family permanently and seeks a way to find peace and happiness, but will only do so once it is safe. He would not put his loved ones at risk, even if it means sacrificing his own wellbeing.
Abilities
Due to being a deity of the ocean, Thaumus has mainly water related abilities. He shares the same magic as his siblings including water manipulation, the ability to communicate with sea life, the ability to breathe underwater, the ability to survive major changes in pressure, and the ability to see well in even the darkest depths of the ocean. Thaumus also has great innate navigational skills, like bird migration instincts, and the ability to change forms at will into anything he pleases. He has a godly form, the form he was born with, but more often takes the form of a regular bagbean.

Trivia
He was once very close with the deity of the stars, which ignited his passion for star charts and astrology.
Tom loves his siblings, the other young gods of the sea, but they have a very strained relationship due to his past of irresponsibility.
The island that makes up Thaumus’ and Palaemon’s main residence is small but features a vast and regal palace that is half above ground and half underwater.
