In every person, there is a Yin and a Yang. Without one side, the other will spiral into madness. This holds true for the Inari family, a family of Kitsunes whose Ancestors directly served Inari, the Goddess of Rice. Only the most prestigious families of Kitsunes get to hold such a surname, and thusly they are strict on who gets to marry into the family. However, the youngest of the previous generation fell in love with a foreigner who visited the fox shrine, causing her sick, dying husband to lay a curse upon her with the last of his strength.

If she ever bares the child of that man, the child will be mercilessly broken in two like that of his heart. One child will be a righteous Yang and strong-willed like he was, and the other a mischievous and deceitful Yin like his wife was. Fearful of the Family's wrath after hearing the final vow of the late fox, the young kitsune escaped overseas with her foreign lover, only to die in a wave of soul fire when the Yin Child was born. Her sacrifice to the demon she birthed calmed it's hunger, ensuring the survival of the rest of her last family.

The Yin and Yang foxes were then raised by the single father, who had them named after the storybook he read to the young fox during their first outing together. The Yang was named Alice while the Yin, Cheshire. With the two children quickly developing their personalities based on the energy in their souls, they eventually discovered their Kitsune heritage, leading themselves to name each other Kami and Yokai, God and Demon. It was mostly used during childish roleplay when Yokai would destroy Kami's legos and Kami had to stop him, but the names soon stuck even to those in their neighborhood.

Although the twins were close, Kami always felt shadowed by Yokai. Kami was the more obedient and academic of the two yet their father showered Yokai in affection and attention. This was mostly because their father bore witness to what Yokai was capable of when they were born, and took extra measures to keep the Yin soul in check. While networking with other Japanese natives in his birth town, Kami eventually came into contact with the children born from his mother and her ex husband, realizing that Yokai was indeed dangerous and that he was a part of Kami's soul that was missing. Kami was soon groomed by his older brothers into assassinating his twin, while Yokai grew weary of the distance Kami was putting between themselves.

It all came to a head when Kami invited Yokai to visit their family grounds, in which the other Brothers tricked their father into a sense of false security. Once back in their family home, their brothers tried in vain to have Kami kill Yokai. From offering Kami poison to even tattooing "Demon" above Yokai's heart for Kami to stab with a knife. However Kami would always back out at the last second, hesitating to follow through. Finally, after reminding Kami about the death of his mother, Kami confronted Yokai just as he was preparing to travel back home, leading the two to argue in the gardens. Yokai wanted to storm out and call his father to pick him up from the shrine after getting fed up with Kami, but Kami swiftly pushed his twin into the pond and held his head under the surface.

It was at this moment of distress that Yokai's waterlogged phone suddenly rang, an unknown number with the icon of a red rotary phone flashing as the phone sank to the bottom with him.

Sometimes Yokai would pretend to be his brother in order to form relationships and be nicer towards others, but the facade fades quickly.

Fact 1

Yokai's father was a foreign man who just left the Marines and started his career in Botany. Yokai's fear of abandonment stems from how his father, although loving and doing the best he could, was afraid of Yokai and only he plus Alice would ever be near him.

Fact 4

Yokai and Kami has orginally planned to marry the same woman, in which only Kami followed through after Yokai's "death".

Patient Yokai was shy and mostly confused, hiding themselves around the Asylum and trying to make sense of where they were. Even though he never forgave Kami for abandoning him plus almost having him killed, Yokai greatly admired and missed his brother, causing him to use most of his magic to disguise himself as a White Kitsune, when in truth he was born a Black Nogitsune. It was with his facade that he convinced a Housekeeper to retire and allow him to take over, and it was with this facade that got him promoted into a Nurse. However, one can only lie for so long, and Yokai's true destructive personality started to leak from under his literal mask. After having his face disfigured from an encounter with a Voidkin, Yokai's grip on his false reality and his hatred for the monsters in the Void grew. Yokai also slowly drew resentful of those Staff members who have yet to become bitter like him, bending most of his anger against Warden Frogger. His unforgiving nature refused to accept Frogger's invitation for friendship, despite the fact that he was mostly jealous of their well rounded and child like soul. He slowly became more and more grumpy, rarely opening up to most and sometimes even belittling patients and staff alike. Without Kami, Yokai is unable to sleep without Nightmares, making his mood get worse each day he refuses to sleep. Somehow, even with such a shift in attitude, he eventually found himself in a Warden position. What was it really that his employer saw in him, both when he wasn't himself and when he was? Yokai can never seem to wrap his head around that.

Journal

Yokai used to sneak out of the Asylum often to document plants and even patients he encounter. He has never made it deep into the Crimson however, since he always ensures that he can see the Asylum from where he is treading. Detailed analysis of the plants and patients can be found in his Journal, which he will not disclose to anyone. He also has written plans and theories of the Void in an attempt to escape it, never giving up the hope to see his brother again.

Injuries

After a confrontation with a hostile Voidkin named Abysmal, Yokai lost part of his left cheek to the maneater and now has a permernant gash on his face. This however, is not the reason he hides his face behind a mask, but it is because he refuses to see his brother in the mirror, or worse, his brother hurt in the mirror.
