Awakening only for a week every thousand years, Fujimi is the sole survivor of long forgotten folklore. After outliving everyone and everything they've ever known, they remain alive despite having lost their very purpose in life. Despite everything, they cannot help but love life.

personality

wistful detatched resigned

extrovert introvert
open reserved
impulsive cautious
confident insecure

likes

candy apples, obi-kazari, netsuke, bento boxes, fireworks & sparklers, rhythm games, milk & bubble tea, puzzle games, people relying on them, red bean paste

dislikes

thinking about the passage of time too much, bright daylight, overly bitter foods, very cold weather, cigarette smoke, the idea that trusting someone makes you naive

To strangers, Jiji comes across as soft-spoken, reserved and polite. They're friendly and always eager to help, but their eyes always seem to hide a crinkle of melancholy. Despite their friendliness, they're frequently alone. From a distance, they seem almost etheral and otherworldly—and, more noticeably, untouchable and incredibly lonely.

When they were younger, Jiji's personality was much more bubbly and cheeky. There was a childlike glee to them no matter what they were doing that has long since faded away. The only real reminder that remains of those days is the precision with which they remember them, though even the memories of those joyful times are starting to fade away.

It would be a lie to say their smile doesn't reach their eyes. It does—it's just distant and wistful. Their politeness isn't a farce; it's just their way of detaching themselves. They're so used to distancing themselves from others that they have a hard time getting attached now. This doesn't extend to just other people—even things that used to bring them joy long ago do little to excite them. At this point, participating in the things they used to enjoy is more of a tradition to them than it is a real hobby.

Despite this, they do enjoy conversing with others, and they spend a lot of their time contemplating and comparing the world as it is now with the world they remember. Bleak thoughts aren't something they're fond of, and they'd rather spend as much time having fun and trying to ward off the bad thoughts. It doesn't work most of the time, but they'll keep trying to be as optimistic as possible despite everything. They understand their fate, and they won't try to fight it, but they'll try to make the best of what they have left regardless. ...Or so they insist to themselves. Lately, it's been harder and harder to stick to that.

history
I. rest
"Ah, my past? I actually don’t remember much… I’m not really someone very interesting. My earliest memories are of the Millennium Comet in the sky and helping out with the festival. It’s changed a lot since then, hasn’t it… Wahh, that’s making me feel kind of nostalgic. Oh, but, don’t get me wrong! I like the current festival a lot too. It’s very different from what it used to be, but people’s excitement never changes. It's very touching. I’m only ever awake for one week every so long, though, so there’s not that much else I can comment on… Um, sorry if that’s kind of boring."
II. healing wish
There's very little Fujimi remembers about how they were born. They're not even certain they were born—for all they know, maybe they've always just existed. For as long as they can remember, they've always known their purpose. They've always been the deity associated with the Millennium Comet, destined to be celebrated and fade with the comet. They never needed more than that.
Just like they've always known their purpose, the village at the foot of the mountain has always worshipped them. Months of preparation would be put into the week-long festival celebrating the Millennium Comet and their awakening. They were always to be treated with the higest respect, to be celebrated and revered, to be welcomed and sent off with veneration. As the years passed, they became regarded less and less as young and clumsy and more and more as wise and all-powerful. Once the comet had passed, they'd thank the shrine workers and depart with a bow and a smile.
Despite the short time of their stay and their almost otherwordly aura and treatment, they always enjoyed getting along with others and making friends with the shrine workers, however temporary they were. Though they were a little mischievous on the occassion, everyone who worked with them would tell you that Fujimi was a delight and incredibly sweet. To them, the people they met were little but fleeting touches and kind strangers, but they held every interaction close to their heart.
To them, this was enough, and existing was something they cherished.
III. doom desire
As time passed and the comet came and went, the ritual began to lose popularity. The ideas of praying to and revering gods and deities started falling out of favour with the population, and it wasn't long before the ritual become completely obsolete. Occasionally there would be someone here or there who still believed in the tales of old, but they would be few and far in between, and even those sorts of people were starting to dwindle.
Fujimi understood this. Traditions and culture change, as does everything. Nothing lasts forever. They're okay with that, and they'll never stop cherishing their memories and the people they've met. The fleeting memories and touches and sights and experiences will never be forgotten as long as they're there to remember them.
IV. last resort
Unlike the ritual, the festival remains in full swing. Just as people from all across the world travel to see it, so too does Fujimi continue waking up to the sight of the Millennium Comet in the sky and the festival lights on the land.
But after thousands and thousands of years, their memory is starting to fail them. What was once intense, warm thoughts is now but a echoing wisp that becomes harder and harder to recall. Without the ritual, without the only thing they've known for their whole existence, they're left without a purpose, without a meaning. But no matter how many times they wake up, that meaning isn't coming back. Every time they wake up, everything is a bit more out of reach. Their smile has long since turned fake instead of soft, their voice meek instead of sensitive.
How much longer can they go on like this? How much longer can they keep hoping? How much longer will they have to endure this painful loneliness?

trivia
  • Their name, Fujimi, is written 藤美 and means means "wisteria" (藤, fuji) and "beautiful" (美, mi) in Japanese.
    • Their name is supposed to be a pun; though it's not a name, 不死身, which is also read as fujimi, means invulnerability/immortality.
    • Jiji is what they generally call and introduce themselves as, and Fujirin is a cutsey nickname they've given themselves. If they had friends, they'd like to be called Fujirin by them.
  • They use mobility aids to help with pain, fatigue and physiologic muscle atrophy, which are the result of sleeping for thousands of years. They generally use underarm crutches (since forearm ones are hard to use with furisode) coupled with leg braces or a manual wheelchair.
    • Despite using a manual wheelchair, they often use a bit of their power to actually propel it while taking care to pretend to be pushing it themselves.
    • Though they're capable of floating, they prefer not to do so in public to blend in with human crowds better.
  • They have a large eye on their stomach, from which they can see and shoot out large beams of energy. Because it's particularly vulnerable, they prefer to cover it.
    • The sclera is a similar shade to their hair, and the pupil is the same colour as their eyes.
  • The obi-kazari hanging from their obi vary, though one of them is always a star.
    • For the holding stick, they're likely to use either a simple wooden one or a decorated glass one.
  • One of the oldest objects they own is an old uchide no kozuchi (a mallet of fortune) that is heart shaped and has long tassels. Its value is purely sentimental, however—although it could be used for "wish granting" by proxy of Jiji's powers, it posesses none of its own.
    • A keepsake of the now bygone ritual, it is very dear to their heart. It's kept hidden away in the depths of Star Cove and is in excellent state despite being thousands of years old.
  • They generally don't have any regular money on them. Instead, they carry around small star pieces to pay for things.
    • Or, rather, they leave the star pieces on the mountain and instead summon them when they need to pay. They enjoy showing off this trick, especially to younger kids, as it looks like a fun magic trick.
  • No matter how much time passes, their favourite snack is and will always be candy apples.
  • Another food related thing they enjoy a lot is bento boxes. They find them really cute, and enjoy seeing all the ways people can arrange them, as well as how they change over time.
  • They adore watching the fireworks, as they're almost always around when they're awake.
    • Aside from that, most of their time awake is spent trying out new festival foods, playing games, listening to the crowds and marvelling at how things have and haven't changed during the last thousand years.
  • Once they fall asleep, they won't awaken for another thousand years. Because of this, they don't sleep at all during the week of the festival, though occasionally they rent a hotel room and close their eyes under the covers without sleeping to mimic humans.

skills & abilities
  • They can teleport anything and anywhere, with very little physical limitations. Whether it's people, items, or themselves—as long as they're aware of its existance, they can teleport anything anywhere.
  • Due to not needing to breathe, they would have little trouble surviving underwater or in outer space.
  • Though they cannot accurately see or predict the future, their personal inuition is almost always eerliy accurate.
  • They're capable of creating a concentrated blast of light from the eye on their stomach, which is so powerful that it summons a meteor shower. Because it is so powerful, it takes a long time for them to store enough energy to be able to use it.
    • It is so powerful that it temporarily warps reality when it is released. The few who have seen the energy been released note that all colours temporarily faded away from their vision, while the exact effects of the blast seem to vary. Nobody who has been hit by or seen it would describe it the same way.
  • When they hibernate, a hard crystal shell envelops their body. This shell is nigh impenetrable, and protects them from any possible attacks.
    • It melts away when they awake, and is a natural built in defense system; it's not something that they are able to consciously put up.
