Starship dad he had a biological son w a person who they divorced shortly after the son was born and the character wasn't really around in the kid's life bc he was going through a lot (his career, his depression, etc). Years after he heavily regrets not being around for his son and not being a good dad (he is not in contact w his son) so he's decided that along the way on the starship he was electected to lead that he would adopt any strays that just didnt have a family or a home or a purpose, and they could stay free of charge on the ship for as long as they would like as long as they were willing to learn and help out a bit
