Azel was once a competant young man who'd sworn an oath under the Erd Tree to assist people no matter what. At first, he'd wanted to be on the Night's Calvary alongside his best friend, but shortly before the war and shattering happened, he'd turned to become a white mask like his father.
Before the ensuing war, white masks were once a tight group of doctors. But as deaths rose and resources became scarce, they transitioned to mercy killing. Azel still tried his best to help people, shunning the now popular term 'war surgeon'.
It wasn't long before he was swept away by Mohg when he abducted all of the war surgeons. Azel, someone who never really bought into any specific religion or god, was frustrated, but spent many a year appeasing the omen to ensure he lived. He and Varre never got along, as Azel believes he's a damn lunatic for worshipping the formless mother and basically selling his soul to Mohg. He also finds Varre a disgrace to proper white masks.
Azel escaped from the palace near the end of the war. It led him toward Mount Gelmir, where he, nearly dead, was found by someone (Rya) in the Volcano Manor. Desperate for somewhere stable to live, Azel offered his services to Tanith and he's stayed there ever since. For the most part, he stays in his room which can be accessed by any tarnished as long as it's unlocked. He cures their wounds and takes care of them until they are sent to Rykard. When he has audience with the snake man, he wears his white mask with long, shimmering black tunic, scarves, and robes pinned together with an intricate snake broach.
Because his mother was a perfumer, Azel has studied endlessly that profession and applies it to his own work. He keeps his own apothecary wherever he goes, though he's quite bitter that he has had to replace it multiple times over the years as he'd moved across the realm.
