Ainsley was born in the city of Glasgow to Jaxon and Esme Kier. It was a pretty simple life, all things considered. They weren't rich, but neither were they poor. Ainsley and his family were the perfect picture of middle class and he never really wanted for anything. Sure, maybe he didn't get all the new toys or gadgets that most of his friends did, but that was okay with Ainsley. He got books and he was one of those kids that always preferred books to toys anyway. When Ainsley was young, he spent most of his awake hours (and a lot of the hours he was suppose to be sleeping) reading everything he could. He loved studying things of the past, the future, of monsters that both did and didn't exist. It helped turn him into an amazing student, who only really got in trouble because he was reading when he was suppose to be studying. At the end of his secondary education, he graduated with honors and coasted right into college.

Once there, for a brief time, Ainsley struggled with what he wanted to major in – it wasn't a case of not knowing what he wanted to do, but more there was too much that he wanted to do. Did he major in just history? Maybe history of science and technology? Or more specific history in relations to a culture? Did he want to focus on preternatural cultures? Did he want to study kelpies or sea monsters or fairies or shape changers or – He never quite made the decision official before he was approached by a man from England who worked for the Supernatural Reserve Units. He had been apparently doing the rounds of looking for the next generation of hopefuls and Ainsley's name had stood out. They wanted to give him a job as a researcher once he graduated. The choice was made; he double majored in Preternatural Studies and Fairy Studies. Ainsley trucked away happily at his work until he graduated and then, at that point, he was ushered into the world of the SRU where he met people like Kaden, Kalira, Skylar, and Nathan. Ainsley was happy; he felt excited for work every day and he never even really minded that he was often times asked to stay late or perform what amounted to miracles. Ainsley had found his calling, he felt, and he couldn't be upset about that.

Then one day, he was asked to tag along on a response call, even though most historians and researchers aren't meant to be in the field. Apparently a situation had gone down of a fight between fairies and shape changers and they had needed Ainsley's expertise (what expertise, Ainsley asks to this day). He went, he helped, and then one of the unconscious shape changers proved to be just conscious enough that Ainsley got scratched. To the outside observer, it looked like Ainsley had just had a fright because he had fallen back and quickly wrapped his jacket a little more around himself. No one was aware that Ainsley had gotten hurt and Ainsley wanted to keep it that way. The SRU weren't suppose to discriminate – whether someone was human or not, it shouldn't matter – but it didn't stop people from looking at supernatural beings as "others" and with a more cautious eye than they would have humans. It was one of those things that if Ainsley went to the doctor's and found out, he felt he would have been ruined. Rather than go to get the confirmation, he quietly squirreled himself away back to his parents' home in Glasgow. There, he quietly went through the process of getting a passport and all the information he would need to start a new life. Also during this time, the full moon came and went, marking him as a werewolf in such a way he couldn't hide any longer.
