she lives in a post-apocalyptic russia a few hundred years in the future. at some point in there hybrid animals were created with genetic modification to create more intelligent pets. then 50-100 years ago there was a massive nuclear war and all modern infrastructure and governments as we know it ceased to exist bc the population was reduced to next to nothing. now society is back to like farming and bartering and theyve barely got an economy deal going just the basic concept of money.
the whole hybrid deal in what used to be russia is still mostly semi-intelligent pets but theres some fringe groups that wanted them More humanlike and More intelligent so spliced more human genetics into them. hazel was originally adopted as a pet by a family from a shady dealer when she was a baby but as she grew up the family realised Uh this is like a whole Human. we are not treating her like an animal..... so instead raised her to be the sibling of the child originally intended to be her owner.
her adoptive family was from the netherlands before the war and so in an attempt to feel included and cling to her human history she becomes obsessed with dutch history including the downfall of the netherlands during the war and the dutch military's involvement. the name hazel is after the fault in our stars and also watership down.
when she moves out of home she decides to open a tulip farm (dutch national flower) on some property she inherited from her grandparents. but this farm backs onto the forest where some wild fox hybrids live and she has the gun to "scare them off" (also she just loves guns)
she desperately desperately only wishes to be seen as a human and for no one to know she's a hybrid which is why she wears the hat, which was a military aviator's cap her grandfather had when he fought in the war
the plot of her "story" basically involves her secret being uncovered by this eccentric hermit who lives in the woods and is a friend to the hybrids who live there and advocates for them. which makes hazel Very uncomfortable bc shes like ummm u better not be friends with me just bc im a hybrid >:|....
when they get closer she shares to her new companion that she's always wanted to visit the netherlands so they set out together but when they arrive they find out that the entire country is now underwater and everything is gone
