Esk are ghostly nature spirits. They are the result of transformations bestowed upon people or animals who are lost, hopeless, or suffering. They live between worlds — able to take both physical or non-physical form to appear solid or as an apparition at will. Like ghosts they haunt the location where they lost their past life; their soul merges with the environment and they become a manifestation of the natural features of that location. Once transformed some esk take on a role as guardian of their new home, others become spiteful spirits or tormentors. Esk gain power from their experiences and can use this power to alter their form, increase their abilities, or create new esk.

4408, as they know themselves to be as an esk, is a confused and aimless spirit who simply hovers unsurely around their lake. In life, however, they were a much more inspiring and lively figure; a young woman called Margaret who lived in the late 1700s, she was an early colonial in North America from England, finding herself among the Appalachian Mountains. She had a deep desire to be a botanist and entomologist like her father and yearned to explore and learn everything about the New World, even if it was non-standard for a woman. Her dream almost came true—but she met a sad demise during her expeditions, ultimately drowning in the very lake 4408 would then call home. 4408 only remembers one thing, which is writing Margaret's last journal entry, entry #4408. In their state of confusion, they believe that is their name.
