Backstory

Diablo was born under an unknown name in the state of Georgia on Earth, in the year 1803. Little is known about his early life, other than his father was a Spanish plantation owner that spoke minimal English, and his mother was a slave. When he was 18, an incident occurred that caused him to kill his father and flee east.

The first verified records of his life are in 1821, when a ship belonging to his father was found drifting towards the Caribbean by a pirate ship. He was the only one on board, found sitting delirious and half-starved below deck and identifying himself as "Yo soy el Diablo."

He spent the next eight years as a pirate, becoming especially close to the first mate, Ambrose Seilmann. In 1829, after being identified and facing imprisonment or death, the crew fled on a final journey to a small island in the Bermuda triangle following a lead of a dark god that granted eternal life. The crew arrived and discovered an altar, but were betrayed and murdered by Ambrose. Literally stabbed in the back and dying, Diablo watched as the altar activated and a figure appeared and fed Ambrose his blood, then allowed him to pass through the portal. The dark figure noticed that Diablo was still alive, and also fed the dying man his blood, before taking the knife and piercing Diablo's right eye, killing him.

Story

Diablo awoke in Vigrid, a newly undead vampire. The coven-now including an also turned Ambrose- had a code of secrecy; though vampires lived throughout the continent, none were allowed to reveal themselves to the living. Diablo disagreed with this, seeing no reason for the vampires to live in the shadows when other predatory and undead species lived in peace with humans and humanoids in some locations, the most prominent being Gaile. A decade after his arrival, he brought a group of like-minded vampires to Gaile, where he spearheaded legislation for vampire rights, such as citizenship, the right to feed on and turn willing humanoids over the age of consent, and social programs to support those who did not wish to feed on the living.

By his ninetieth birthday, vampires had become well integrated into Gailien society and it was known to be the highest concentration of vampires of any place in Vigrid, with Diablo looked up to as an unofficial leader. However, Diablo was not satisfied at this- immigrants coming to Gaile reported that very little had changed outside Gaile's borders. Vampires still lived in secrecy in large cities, feeding on, turning, and killing anyone they pleased with no repercussions from the leadership. In addition, Ambrose had become the local head of vampires in Utopia, a city-state where the majority of humans in Vigrid lived.

Now able to shift his appearance at will and physically resembling his former human body very little, Diablo infiltrated Utopia, eventually making his way to the upper echelons of society and encountering Ambrose again for the first time since their deaths. Ambrose didn't recognize him, and Diablo had still hoped that his fears had been unfounded, still carrying feelings for Ambrose, despite everything. Ambrose became close enough to Daiblo to reveal his true plan- to become the leader of not only all vampires in Vigrid, but to subjugate all living beings, reducing them to little more than cattle. In a fit of passion, Diablo revealed his true identity. The two fought, with Ambrose becoming injured but surviving and Diablo fleeing, swearing to stop him.

At the age of 102, Diablo gave birth to his first child, his daughter Maria, in Gaile a few months later. Twenty years later, he turned her into a vampire as well.

Over the next 200 years, Diablo had a single son and twin boys with mortal parents. He turned his younger children at the age of twenty as well, but he chose to turn neither of his partners, and so they both eventually perished of old age. Though the answer was obvious as to why he broke his promise for his own flesh and blood, unable to live without his children, no one knew for sure why he had sworn to turn no one. Perhaps it was due to him being turned against his will- but aside from those few exceptions, it was an oath he upheld past his six hundredth birthday.

It was around this time that he had a chance encounter- and later, a relationship- with the human history professor, Rusty De La Rosa. Diablo's feelings for Rusty were different and more intense than he'd felt in centuries, and he was unable to resist offering eternal life to Rusty- an offer he accepted. However, Diablo knew the time to face Ambrose and stop his plan was finally nearing. Both wanting to keep him safe and knowing Rusty was far too inexperienced to assist him compared to his children that had been training for the coming war for centuries, Diablo left him without a word, intending to return to his lover once the danger was over. However, unknown to both parties, Diablo was pregnant for a fourth time.

Diablo returned to Gaille eight months later to give birth to triplets, choosing to tell Rusty only at the last minute. Rusty was furious with Diablo- for leaving, for not telling him about his pregnancy, and mostly, once he admitted the truth, for planning to use his children as soldiers to take down his archenemy. In Daiblo's mind, Rusty was reacting as an irrational human, and not looking at the big picture of the eternity to come- but this only made Rusty angrier, telling Diablo (perhaps truthfully) that he'd lost his humanity somewhere along the way. In the end, Rusty sued Diablo for custody of his three children, leading to a bitter five-year court battle.
